Cablevision Unveils New Speed Tiers
Basic (15 Mbps), Ultra50 (50 Mbps) and Ultra 101 (101 Mbps)
by Karl Bode 10:27AM Monday Jul 15 2013
As our early leaks had suggested, Cablevision quietly today took the wraps off of their new speed lineup for Optimum Online customers. While the company has yet to issue an official statement, the company's website lists Cablevision's new, three tier lineup: Optimum Basic (15 Mbps down, 5 Mbps up), Optimum Ultra 50 (50 Mbps down, 25 Mbps up) and Optimum Ultra 101 (101 Mbps down, 35 Mbps up). While the company did eliminate the steep $300 installation fee for their fastest 101 Mbps tier, users in our forums suggest that the speed hikes will be coming with some price hikes as well. Users who've yet to see any changes may want to try rebooting their modems today.

Decent value...

Seems like a decent value to go from 15/5 to 50/25 for an additional $4.95 per month with no contract.

Cablevision is the best cableco in the U.S.

And has the most widespread coverage of the fastest speeds.

Here is my speedtest from tuday morning
It looks like the new speeds are even better than advertised. I had the boost plus and i was getting a solid 58-59Mbps down and 8Mbps up.

Re: New speeds are here

I'm on a wireless machine right now but I have boost plus and on my wired machine I got 91 down and 38 up. That's insane!!!! I hope these speeds hold. i checked 2 days ago and it was the normal 60 down and 8 up that I always used to get. Love these new speeds.

Re: yay

Gotta tip my hat to Cablevision! They really stepped up their game. I had
Directv for years because I always hated Optimum's picture. 2 years ago they offered me a deal I couldn't refuse. I was amazed by how much the picture improved!!. It blew away my Directv picture. My 2 year promo was about to expire and I got a letter last week that they were renewing my deal for another year for 10 bucks more. Now the free speed increase to boot.i don'y pay for any boxes. I use a infinitv streamed to 3 media center extenders and a pc with a 2tb hard drive as a whole house dvr. You can't beat it!

Re: Upload Only

Dave I don't know how true it is but I read on one of the ool threads that if you were getting boost plus for free youwould ony get the upload speed increase, but, if you were paying anything at all for boost plus you would get ultra speeds. doesn't make sense to me but that is what I read. I don't know if that's true

I have boost+ (14.95 mo), rebooted my modem sunday, was receiving Ultra 101 speeds, 117/36 Mbps. The memos posted state its at no additional charge.

You do have a Docsis 3.0 modem and a router with a Gigabit WAN/LAN ports? Also are you on your home wifi?

Re: Charter now owns CableVision?

Charter does not own Cablevision.

Charter purchased the "Optimum West" portion of their network in the Montana/Utah/Colorado area. This was formerly "Bresnan".

I originally thought the same, but when you click on that link in the article above about speed tiers, it forwards you to the site that says "Optimum is now Charter". I'm surprised that no one has picked up on that yet. Also, when I go to Optimum.com, I see the same thing. However, when going to cablevision.com or optonline.net, there is no mention of Charter. I guess CV has not made it official yet, but they will pretty soon.

Re: Charter now owns CableVision?

Optimum.com has a horrible redirect procedure that forwards you to charter if the server thinks you live outside the NYC metro area. This was originally done to try to use a single website for both optimum east and optimum west.

If you look at the small text at the bottom there's a link for people that don't live in the optimum west service area. Unfortunately that link now goes to charter instead of the optimum east website like it previously did. That makes it impossible to reach the optimum east page unless your IP geolocates to the east coast.

Re: Charter now owns CableVision?

Makes sense now that you explained it. I was pulling it up on a work computer; although I work on the East Coast our Internet access goes through proxies that are in the mid-west.

Ultra 101

Click for full size
Turned out that i got the Ultra 101 speeds but my netgear router was holding it back and that's why i did not get the full speeds today morning. The netgear can handle only 100Mbps. So now i hooked up my pc to the modem without the router and here's what i got.

Me...

My modem rebooted Friday night and I noticed Saturday afternoon that I'm now getting 100mbs+ download speeds. Speedtest.net says I'm getting around 110mbs download and about 18-20mbs upload.

I had the normal Boost service and I wasn't informed of the change, so I assume that means I won't be charged extra for the new speed. They'd better not start charging me more without telling me first!

I'd call and ask, but I'm kind of afraid that they made a mistake and that I'm not supposed to have this much speed.

Re: Me...

According to the leaked internal memos, for residential customers, its a free upgrade (SMB customers get speed upgrades that much the tier equivalent, not a bump to the next highest)

It also states if you pay anything month for boost/boost plus, you get Ultra 101 speeds for the same Boost/boost plus prices. No additional charge.

If you get Boost as a Free promo, you only get Ultra 50 speeds and it will be 5$ mo when the promo ends.

Again, these are what the leaked memos state.

Re: Congrats Cablevision Customers

Existing Ultra users like myself do not get any price reduction (I pay $55.00/month) even though Boost users get a free upgrade to Ultra101 for $14.95/month.

So..... I called CV's Retention dept., got a Supervisor and bitched and bitched. Result... now paying $14.95/month. Sweet.

Re: Congrats Cablevision Customers

CV should just make it official.. ultra 101 should be $44.90 / $64.90 on/off promotion... Force Verizon's hand to react...

Re: Congrats Cablevision Customers

I just switched from FIOS back to CV with some trepidation. I did it mainly for $$$, after this change it was a wise deal.. PQ almost as good as VZ, Internet .... faster for a savings of @ $20 a month.

Big boost too!

Just got a modem upgrade from cablevision, old surfboard SBV5120 to a newer Arris TM822. Before upgrading the modem was getting 5up/25down, now getting 35up/80down. This is going through a Belkin share (tomato shibby) router (non-gigabite). We were paying for basic internet with the triple play. Ping times remained the same ~9ms.
