Cablevision, Verizon Still Bickering Over Ads
NAD Gives Cablevision Wrist Slap for '3X Faster' Claim
by Karl Bode 12:39PM Wednesday Jan 25 2012
Cablevision took a massive public relations beating four months ago after an FCC study showed that the company failed to provide the speeds they advertised 50% of the time. Since then we'd noted that Cablevision had been quietly bumping delivered speeds, and yesterday the FCC confirmed that Cablevision had made serious strides over the last four months -- now delivering advertised speeds 90% of the time during peak hours. It didn't take long for Cablevision to seize on the announcement, filing suit against Verizon -- then settling that lawsuit with Verizon for an undisclosed sum.

Click for full size
Cablevision recently escalated the dispute with a new series of ads claiming Cablevision's faster than FiOS -- at least as long as you're comparing Cablevision's 50 Mbps service to Verizon's slowest-available FiOS speed. In a new press statement, the National Advertising Division of the Better Business Bureau has given Cablevision a wrist slap for the ads, several of which insist Optimum Online is "3X faster than FiOS" well, aren't true:
quote:
NAD recommended that the advertiser modify the challenged advertisements to make the basis of comparison for the “3X Faster” claim clear to consumers by adding it to the main claim rather than disclosing the basis of comparison in a fine print disclosure. NAD noted in its decision that the upstream speeds available to consumers who subscribe to the Optimum Online Ultimate Triple Play bundled package with Optimum Boost are not "3X Faster" than the upstream speeds available via Verizon’s Triple Play bundled package.
The NAD process is a self regulatory system where cases can be handed off to the FTC for false advertising enforcement. However, most ads have already run and had their impact by the time competitors get around to retracting misleading claims.

Eh

Eh, can't be any worse than every cable company and fiber outfit claiming their service is X faster than dsl, "when compared to 1.5mbit dsl service". Since when has 1.5mbit been the average dsl connection?

The NEW Cablevision commercials claim " Optimum online is 3X faster than FioS basic" . How ridiculous.

FioS "Basic" which they are referring to is FiOS' former slowest tier 15/5 , which in most cases netted the customer 20/6. 3X's faster? Suuure. Find me a basic OOL customer who gets 60/18 speeds.

The NEW slowest FiOS tier is 25/25, which nets customers closer to 30/30 . If Cablevision was smart, theyd simply stop running ANY ads. They have a garbage product and people are starting to notice how inferior their product is, and how deceitful they are.

if you compare their cable internet with other US and abroad cable internet providers, it doesnt look so much like "garbage".
until i see cablevisions cable internet throttling speeds, adding usage caps & overages and doing other such ridiculous stupid things to gauge the customer of $ like the other US and abroad cable internet providers, i wont consider it "garbage".
by no means am i a "fan boy" of cablevision, there is many things i could say that i dont like about the company.
even though verizon fios can be much better than cablevisions cable internet in many ways, its easier to stick with what you had for years before verizon fios was available in the simple order to avoid time lost from work to take the whole day off for the same installer incompetence both companies have.

Re: Eh

My garbage comment wasnt geared strictly to internet, but to Cablevisions TV service as well. Its simply terrible, and if you think its a good product, Id like to see if your wardrobe and hairstyle is from the 1990's also.

Lost time from work for a FiOS install? You can plan your install on a Saturday, in some cases on Sunday. As far as the real world, couldnt you find someone to babysit your house during the week? Its a silly argument to say waiting a few hours for an install is a reason to stay away, when the product is WAY SUPERIOR. Some people on this site would kill to get FiOS.

Verizon is still offering the so-called 15/6 (20/6) BA$IC plan, only it's just not as cheap as it used to be as a triple play..

The tiers are $89 15/5, $99 25/25, $109 35/35 (about a 20% increase over the best deals offered early in 2010)
50/20 isn't really worth it in triple play ringing in at $129. (these prices DO NOT include set-top rental and taxes/fees which range from $15-$25 depending on tier selected). My paycheck didn't see a nice boost so value for the $ needs to stay fixed.. usually prices for broadband get cheaper, but the increases in digital voice & cable-tv are dragging triple play prices higher and that's not good.

ALL TRIPLE PLAY TIERS have seen PRICE HIKES! Yikes! I hope Verizon loses some customers jacking up prices now that Cablevision will start to play fair instead of allowing the shared throttle wheedle down to 1/3rd the tier speed. You could get away with that on some grandma who just surfs the web and doesn't really download or upload... but for a tech savvy person, that won't fly anymore-- these people will complain and SWITCH ISPs if necessary! On the flipside.. when some consumers see Verizon's bill pricetag creep with taxes & fees, that could push an annyoyed customer the other way.

Around 9% of Long Island, NY (over half are GATED communities who locked Verizon out in their greenbuilds) is NOT wired for FIOS and Cablevision has free reign to charge what they want as DSL is the other option.

I agree with your point about the advertising.

OTOH, I have to be grateful to Cablevision because they DO provide me decent internet service---

---unlike Verizon which refuses to wire half of my town for FiOS, even though this is the heart of Verizon's service footprint.

Consider:

I live in a prosperous suburban town, Verizon wired half for FiOS then walked away.

EVEN THOUGH they bombard us with FiOS mailings, FiOS TV ads, and have even stuck FiOS advertisements on my car at a nearby shopping center!

So:

Cablevision may not be as good as a broadband service as Verizon FiOS, BUT at least they PROVIDE it.

Cablevision serves pretty much its entire service footprint, Verizon simply does not.

Verizon has redlined entire cities such as Buffalo and Baltimore.

UNTIL Verizon serves a solid majority of its service area, it is THEY who should stop their bragging....

Actually a lot of people are a ways out from the CO. That is the comparison for us: 8mbit Comcast with PowerBoost or 1.5mbit DSL.

Also, anything less than 110% performance on a mostly consistent basis is garbage for cable. Comcast does it. We get 8800/2200 on our 8/2 internet nearly 100% of the time, plus PowerBoost.

hmm

Cablevision is wrong on their advertisements. I just went to verizon fios page and I the minimum internet I can get is 15/5. Bundle wise the minimum is 25/25 for internet.

The problem is that in BIG chunks of cablevisions service area Verizon refuses to offer fios. Just ask anybody in the town of brookhaven.

So these ads wont matter because by verizons OWN choice they are just giving cablevision customers.

Re: hmm

Maybe one day these municipalities will get PISSED OFF and build thier own fiber.. how much could it really cost $1M, $2M? we're not talking about a huge geography here for each muni. Then you can choose NEITHER cablevision nor verizon and the muni would have the last laugh! Let consumers buy video/catv over the internet at COMPETITIVE PRICES! Speeds could start at 200/200 megabits!
