Cablevision Will Pay For Your MLB.com Access
As effort to ensure users can still watch World Series
The Cablevision and Fox drama continued yesterday with Fox accusing Cablevision of directing users to pirated online Fox Sports streams, and Fox rejecting a one-year fig leaf offer that would have returned Fox channels to Cablevision's lineup. In order to help ease the anger of customers missing the World Series on Fox, Cablevision also sent an e-mail to subscribers yesterday saying they'd refund any Cablevision customer who paid to watch the games via MLB.com:
quote:
MLB.com’s 2010 Postseason.TV package features live coverage of all World Series games and includes the option of choosing from eight different fixed camera angles and displaying up to four cameras on the screen simultaneously, along with in-game highlights and other enhancements. Customers who purchase the package and forward their purchase confirmation to Cablevision will have a $10 credit applied to their monthly bill within two billing cycles.
Again, it's amusing that all Fox and Cablevision appear to be accomplishing here is showing their audience that paying for expensive cable may not be necessary.

Things that each side could do

IMO both sides are not doing things that could show that they are trying to resolve this dispute.

On the CV side, they can make a irrevocable offer in exchange for FOX restoring the feed to make the final settlement retroactive to the present not when the agreement is reached. IOW: Even if it takes another month to reach an agreement, CV will pay FOX from the date that FOX restores the feed. That way FOX gets paid for the feed as if the agreement were already in effect.

On the FOX side, restore the feed but only for the Baseball shows. Right now, FOX is playing hardball (pun intended) by withholding access to the games.

I also think that the Fox5/MyTv9 feeds should be treated as a separate issue from the Cable-Only Fox channels and not be treated as a bundle.

If they are giving som epeople access to baseball, they should be giving other people access to other content. Why are the baseball fans special?

Too bad mlb.tv SUCKS

just an FYI to those CV customers thinking of taking them up on this offer:

i bought the postseason.tv package in the beginning of the playoffs. it sucks. you dont see what the TV station shows. you pick 1 to 4 cameras to view at once. the cameras do not change based on the play or where the ball is. if you're watching the center field camera to watch the batter and he hits the ball somewhere, you're stuck watching the CF camera follow the runner around the bases.

OK, so you can have 4 cameras up, why not pick 4 to cover the entire playing field? i'll tell you why:
•the plugin crashes. a lot. more camera angles and using their "next def" plugin makes it worse
•the cameras aren't synced with each other. i've seen 1 camera as much as 20 seconds behind another.
•you hear the TV announcers but don't see what they see. all replays or alternate angles shown on TV are absent from mlb.tv even tho you hear the announces talking about them.
•you dont see anything on the video screen except the video feed; no stats overlays, score tickers, scoreboard, batter's count, etc. they have a sidebar that shows this information outside of the video, but increasing the video to max resolution requires hiding the sidebar leaving you clueless to the score, count, runners on base, etc unless you're really watching every pitch.
•IT CRASHES A LOT. if you crash there are a few things you need to do: right click the flash popup for the mlb.tv feed and choose settings, then disable hardware acceleration and then up the local storage or cache or w/e they call it to 10MB. If you;re using next def, turn it off.
•the video feeds by default arent very high quality. thats not to say they arent watchable, but theyre nothing special. to get better quality, you need to install and run their Nex-Def plugin, which only works in firefox. even then the quality isn't special. it's not as good as a 720p youtube shot with a quality camera and i dont think it's even 720p dimensions. next-def crashed a lot for me under W7 64 with latest FF so ive been leaving it off.

Re: Too bad mlb.tv SUCKS

Totally agree! It's 2010 and they still SUCK! I waited for post season before buying the post season package but hate it so much that I go out to see it elsewhere. Won't do it again unless they change their stupid broadcast technique. And of course they have not even bothered emailing back. The picture quality is quite good but one thing that this guy here forgot to mention is that even if you want to change the camera, it has to stop the stream completely (therefore you miss 30 + seconds of the game) while MLB.tv is "verifying your account" .. I mean who stupid is that?!?!?!

I absolutely HATE it ... NEVER again. What a waste of money.

Dumb!

Whats wrong with someone putting up a pair of rabbit ears and tuning into Fox over the air?

Besides, who cares about the world series anyways, its just Texas and San Fran.

Why do people keep saying this? A lot people don't live where this works. Mountains/hills/valleys get in the way. I live only 50 miles from NYC and can't get ANY channels "over the air" (unless you count snow as a channel), which is why we got cable when we first moved here 30 years ago.

To keep saying "get rabbit ears" as the cure all is ridiculous.

MLB and content owners

Ones got to wonder if/when MLB and the content owners will get involved, as it's their product suffering.

Might be more than $11.99 if you've got to buy either a new TV with ATSC tuners or a converter box...

There are plenty of converter boxes out there, some new, some used.

Didn't most people order two coupons ?

Re: Oh brother...

There is no such thing as an "HDTV" OTA antenna. That's just marketing hyperbole. All antennas, even a twisted wire hanger will divine the rays from the sky to your eyeballs.

Yep...

It's a clear sign that the norm that these companies operate under won't work. Not that long ago when i was dumb enough to pay for TV service of any kind Belo (CBS Affiliate) pulled the same crap.

First off it's a FREE OVER THE AIR STATION. Neither Dish, DirecTV or Charter rebroadcast it in HD so the only way a smart person would watch it is right of an antenna. Anyone who lives within the area would.

So the only people who couldn't watch it are those outside the signal range. Well by cutting those people off without an alternative just loses you thousands of viewers and thus advertising dollars. There is NO win in trying to squeeze money out of the operators and thusly the viewers.

Honestly if tv services like this went a-la-carte two thirds of the channels we waste our money on each month would be gone off the air. You're basically paying for a gallon of gas that you're only use a half pint of.

Screw that. It's why Netflix is so popular.

Can't CV just carry the channel anyway?

I'm not sure how all this works, but don't cable companies get each and every channel we see via C-band or KU-band satellite transponders? And if local fox channels are effected, if those are received via fiber, can't Cablevision just put another fox affiliate on that's from another area which they could perhaps pulll in via satelite?
Also, if anyone still has a C-band or KU-band dish, as many of my friends did in the 90's, they can watch fox feeds directly, just as the cable providers get them right?
