Can Disney Add Competition to Japan Wireless Market?
Or will they at least make their move into phone service work this time?

Disney is trying to break its way into the Japanese wireless phone market, a market which is already tight with competition. The country is dominated by three major mobile operators. Disney will partner with one of those, Softbank Corp., to bring Disney phones and animated content to the wireless table.

The Japanese government has been encouraging partnerships such as this one in the hopes that it will increase competition and therefore drive down prices for consumers. Japanese consumers pay some of the highest cell phone rates in the world. As for Disney, the goal to achieve one million consumers through the move indicates that they have high hopes despite failure of a similar marketing attempt here in the United States.

Re: US Failure?

Disney was just an MVNO, who used Sprints network but branded their own devices and service.

Looks like Verizon did a deal with Disney to acquire departing US customers when Disney Mobile closes down on 12/31/2007.

Disney phones won't work on any other provider because of locked in software, so Disney has a reimbursement program to pay for worthless phones.

And Sprint loses another MVNO. Looks like Sprint just keeps getting bad news all the time.

Re: US Failure?

They are the only ones that really have MVNO's. Verizon had AMPED and they lost millions from it. Sprint on the other hand has not lost because their MVNO's are strong. SDK and earthlink, Disney.

BAD IDEA Walt Disney,(ie DISNEY,Inc) is an AMERICAN tradition,/company,and look at past,EVERY TIMEan American corporation has allowed a Japanese company to become a partner with it. the Japanese company & Gov't end up owning the controlling interest & the corp.,and that always means layoff's & cut in American salaries.

Japan does not like gaijin [insert anything here].

They just don't do foreign.
Just look at the XBox & 360.

Aside from that fact, this looks like the ultimate Mickey-Mouse setup if you'll excuse the pun.

Ha-ha! Silly gaijin mouse, you will never control Japan's mobile phone market. Because Japan's mobile phone market is very harsh and competitive! Ha-ha!

did you even read my response? No tmobile and alltel do not exist in japan. I said japan only has 3 carriers. And I picked the top 3 here to make a point sayign that would be like the US only having the 3.
