The Globe and Mail explores the same rush by telcos in Canada to get into the video-market, as cable providers have quickly moved to offer VoIP service. Smaller Canadian telcos like Manitoba Telecom Services have been offering TV for a while (we mentioned it back in 2003), but major players like Bell Canada won't even begin serious deployment until 2006.

Out west, we have Telus offering a limited (read: less than 1000 houses) deployment of IPTV but.... no HDTV. Unless the telco's can get some serious bandwidth through their wires to deliver HDTV, they will only be able to capture a shrinking portion of the tv market. Once they can deliver HD and onDemand, it's an even ball game and hopefully we'll see price wars like the gas price wars of times apast and great value being delivered to the consumer!
Here in saskatchewan, Sasktel has been deploying and improving on thier IPTV service for the last 2-3 years! -- never apoligize for being who you are, and never respect anyone that says you should.
I know, works great. On-demand is there and working, with content slowly growing, and HDTV is out sometime next year. I think most telcos realize that extra bandwidth is needed, but are being quiet about deploying the infrastructure to do it. SaskTel is doing fine with ADSL for the moment, but upgrades are quietly in progress. MTS used VDSL for their service, doing things through a staggered release as the areas were upgraded to offer the bandwidth. -- I do whatever my Rice Krispies tell me too....
