RALEIGH, N.C. (1010 WINS) -- The Carolina Hurricanes have won the Stanley Cup by defeating the Edmonton Oilers 3-to-1 in Game Seven.
A couple of low-scoring Carolina defensemen put Edmonton's comeback on ice and Cam Ward stopped nearly everything that came his way, giving the Hurricanes their first NHL championship with a 3-1 victory over the Oilers on Monday night.
The success of the Hurricanes tore at the hearts of hockey fans in Hartford, Conn., the city the team abandoned nine seasons ago. The Hartford Whalers, who joined the NHL in a 1979 expansion, never played for the Stanley Cup.
