Carriers Show Off Their HD Channel Counts
FiOSTV Competitors Respond
by Karl Bode Monday 28-Jul-2008 tags: competition · business · HDTV
Not to be out-done by Verizon's announcement this morning that they're now offering 100 high definition channels in NYC, DirecTV quickly issued a press release this afternoon stating they'd be offering 130 HD channels by mid-August, and 1080p movies later this year. In the hopes of not being forgotten, a Cablevision PR rep e-mails me to state they're starting the deployment of the 15 additional channels announced earlier this month, bringing their HD channel total to 60. Maybe someday, increased baby bell and Internet TV competition will result in carriers spending less time worrying about channel counts and more time competing on price.

100? 130? Try 25.

Yeah, that's how many HD channels I get from COMCAST. Time to see about switching to DirecTV.

Re: 100? 130? Try 25.

This is why you never see Comcast releasing numbers. They don't got jack.

They charge the same or more than other providers while you get less. Look at other providers and see the HD channels you don't get. Don't walk, run to Directv or Dish.

If it weren't for companies trying to compete with Comcast, they'd have 4 channels like the poor sap with TW.

Where I am in Connecticut AT&T only offers the 1.5m / 384k DSL tier. Comcast HSI offers 6m / 1m, 8m / 1m or 2m, and 16m / 2m tiers, I got an email from them that in the near future a 50m / 5m tier will be introduced in my area. AT&T still only offers 1.5m / 384k. Guess who is ahead in my community?

I would highly recommend it. I was on Comcast HD for 2 years, and I just switched to DirecTV HD the 1st of June, and its night and day. The quality and quantity are better, and I'm saving $20 for an equivalent package + 2 SD tv's. I did however get Comcast Business internet because Qwest is a joke at best, and Comcast Residential is not fast enough.

I've currently got comcast HD and DirecTV HD due to a promotion with Comcast HSI (I only wanted Comcast HSI). Anyway, the HD on either Comcast or DirecTV looks great. If you can fit DirecTV into your budget, it has great looking HD in my experience. It appears comparable to anything Comcast is offering, at least on my sets.

Now they're getting into filler

There aren't 130 channels worth a crap. You end up with Basket Weaving HD and Austrailian Dick Wrestling HD.

I'd rather have higher quality (full resolution/higher bitrate/lower compression) popular channels than a bunch of questionable ones.

Half of those are stretch-o-vision: aka non-HD crap stretched full screen.

I don't consider that "good" at all.

Law and Order was shot in 16:9, so it's broadcast in the original 16:9. Watch just about every other show on that channel that was shot 4:3, and you'll see stretch-o-vision do its work... 4:3 stretched to fill 16:9 screens.

And they count all the Premium networks.... It is nice to see all HBO channels in HD, but if you don't subscribe to Starz, Showtime, etc.... there's a good 30+ HD channels right there that they can claim, but not everyone has.

As far as offerings, there are still some channels (such as BBC America) who are still launching their HD channels later this year.

But hey.... I have Time Warner Cable, and just like other cable companies they are notoriously lagging behind on HDTV offerings.

Here I have Comcast and I find they always push tehy have teh most HD content and channels. I live in Veront and have 15-20 stations in hd, 6 or so are local stations like ABC, NBC. The rest are like Discovery and that is about it. For over a year they said they were adding Sci-Fi HD and Spike HD, and we have not recieved anything new in about 2 years. If anything the HD picture has cut down in quality and looks unclear also the color's are off to conserve bandwitdh.

They have also been running more Fiber-optic lines with the existing ones for some reason.

"All HD programming will also be available in the Dolby Digital audio format, and later this year, DIRECTV will begin offering movies in 1080p, the highest resolution format available for HD video enthusiasts and the same format used by Blu-Ray HD DVDs."

One thing to remember, a Youtube video can be re-encoded to 1080p SIZE.
It doesn't mean that the vidoe will be worth looking at, just that it is in fact 1920x1080p in display size.

Blu-ray quality? From a Sat?
Doubtful!

1080p sounds exciting, but it's actually kind of a non-feature for movies. Movies are 24fps. At 1080i, you have 60 interlaced frames per second. 1080i/60fps is the same amount of picture information as 1080p at 30fps, but there's a small time difference between the frames.

Because in 24fps film, there is no temporal difference between the frames, you can perfectly construct a 1080p frame from a 1080i movie source. You'll even be able to throw out some of the redundant frames that are taking up time to get from 24 to 30fps (or 60 interlaced frames).

I'm guessing what DirecTV is going to do is send the source as 1080p/24. Then let the receiver convert to 1080i if necessary. This requires LESS bandwidth than 1080i/60, because there is no need for those redundant frames. It also lets them tout a 1080p feature.

This is essentially the same way that 480p DVD players work, even though the source is technically interlaced video.

It's going to have to (firmware update?) if they're going to be advertising 1080p movies as a feature.

As for existing 1080i material, any 1080p set that has a deinterlacer that's worth a damn should be able to do an excellent job converting a 1080i movie to 1080p, for the reasons I just described. Of course, it's always better to have the receiver definitively deliver the 1080p frames if possible.

DirecTV's announcement

Anyone who thinks DirecTV's announcement is really worth anything - go over to a DirecTV forum today (I hit dbstalk) and see what they're saying. Their expansion is NOT sitting well with most of the subscribers. They got exactly 3 new HD national channels listed. The rest are all PPV and RSNs.

I've posted this before - there were lots of people here on dslreports getting all worked up over DirecTV's latest satellite (D11) and ALL the HD that they were going to add as a result. I pointed out that D11 wasn't going to provide much room for a couple reasons:

1) The spot-beam capability on D10 was damaged last summer when it was launched. Dish is going gang-busters adding local markets, and DirecTV needed to compete on that front, so they made up for that lack of spot-beam on D10 with D11.

2) They're moving their old MPEG-2 HD channels over to D11 - that sucks up ~20+ slots on their new satellite with their old HD channels.

3) In order to compete with more on-deman programming they needed up the number of PPV offerings that they have. Yeah they officially launched DirecTV On Demand, but it's way behind the curve on the VOD front (not to mention that downloading HD content via the web is slow as hell).

As for the 1080p announcement... again, that's probably in response to Dish, who announced the same thing just recently. Considering I don't yet have a 1080p TV... I really don't care. Besides, those are only going to be a select number of PPV movies.

DirecTV's math on the HD channel count really bugs me. They count national network feeds (both east and west coast), RSNs (all of them - even though no one customer can get all of them), and their PPV feeds. Take away the network, RSN, and PPV feeds, and this announcement puts DirecTV at 66 national HD channels. FiOS will have ~92 - 93 actual national HD channels by the end of this week in NY.

Almost makes me want to move to NYC Almost. Guess I'll just have to be patient... just a few more weeks... just a few more weeks...

DirecTV Only has 7 MPEG2 HD Channels left. That takes about 1 and a half transponders. (5 channels per transponder) If like D10 they'll probably have 14 National Transponders in use. (D10 temporarily has 16 due to space issues) That's 70 National channels they have room for.
And those 3 new nationals are the only ones announced because DirecTV had an agreement to public announce the carriage of them. There will be more, most likely the missing premiums and PPV
23 RSNs + 3 Nationals= 27 that leaves another 3 open for the addition of 30 and a total of 8 unknown channels to make it to 130 HD.
I dont think DirecTV will fill all of those initial launch channels up with PPV.

Also, the 1080p movies will probably be through DirecTV's new Movies Now Service, that utilizes DirecTV's reserve on the Hard Drive.

Comcast HD

Comcast will be adding the Big Ten Network august 15th in the footballs state footprint. The channel will also be available in HD.

Does anyone know if they will be launching more channels that day? Usually, the in past, they have launched HD channels in bunches.

Also, how much room will there be after the 2009 switch? I live in Detroit, and we only have like 30 HD channels here.
