Case study: Losing sync? check the filters!
cause a filter can be between you and sync!

Internet Light Goes Red, DSL Resets

It has happened for months now. I'll be using the Internet when browsing won't work anymore. A minute later, the Internet light on the modem (2WIRE 2701HG-B) will go red. Another minute later, both the Internet and DSL lights reset.

At the phone jack, I have a filter there that has one socket for the DSL phone wire, and another socket for a phone. Since I do not have a phone near my computer, only the DSL phone wire is plugged into the filter, and not another phone or fax...

Some numbers right now...

DSL Down Up
Current Rate: 576 kbs 512 kbs
Max Rate: 6744 kbs 884 kbs
Current Connection:
Current Noise Margin: 31.0 dB 18.0 dB
Current Attenuation: 37.8 dB 16.5 dB
Current Output Power: 11.0 dBm 11.8 dBm

My current rate is usually 3000 kbs. The noise margin is around 11, but whenever the internet light goes red, the margin reads negative numbers.

I notice that whenever my current rate is 3000, and the max rate is 8000, my connect is perfect. I usually get about 2.6 mbps from speedtest.net.

Detailed statistics...

I get hundreds of thousands of uncorrectable blocks and cell header errors, as well as loss of cell delineations. Within a few days I get a million uncorrectable blocks.

Other times, I get about a dozen uncorrectable blocks in a day. Yes, only a dozen.

At DSL diagnostics, I get impulse comp tones and a big positive number for uncancelled echo A LOT. Sometimes, the internet still works. And sometimes, I get -11 echo and no impulse comp tones.

All phones and satellite boxes that have phone jacks plugged in are filtered.

I once tested at the NID and got -18 uncancelled echo. The stats were pretty nice.

Any help?

Initial test

I didn't see too many problems with this at the moment. Is it still erratic? I do see some errors accumulate now and then but it's kind of erratic at best.

If I had to guess and based on the pattern, someone picking up a unfiltered phone later in the evening? The bursts of errors happend at exactly these times

• 3 p.m.-3:45 P.M.
• 4 P.m-4:30 P.M.
• 5 P.M. (happening now)

The modem is also reporting a "High power noise" condition detected. Says "please check inside wiring". Any lights that come on or that might be dimming currently?

investigation and questions

I asked the first question if he has any dimmers or coach lights. In experience
past these were the typical culprits of something like this. Treadmills as well,
as other devices.

The poster answered with the following

No. I notice that whenever the home phone rings, the Internet stops, the light goes red, and then DSL light resets.

So I had the customer do the following:

try this...

1.) disconnect all phones from their respective jacks.

2.) using a cell phone! call your house phone while surfing.

3.) report back if your Internet still drops or does not drop.

Poster reports back: "Does not drop."

my thought: Aha! Now we are getting somewhere! ;)

Poster took a look at his

Looking at my stats again...

Current Rate: 3008 kbs 512 kbs
Max Rate: 5816 kbs 1024 kbs
Current Connection:
Current Noise Margin: 11.0 dB 21.0 dB
Current Attenuation: 37.6 dB 16.5 dB
Current Output Power: 7.7 dBm 11.9 dBm

The output power is pretty good...any reason for that? All I did was move the modem away from the plug and a power strip with four or five things plugged into it.

Uncancelled echo is good, at -8.4...

I suspected that this wasn't going to go far because the device causing the problem may still be attached.

Got the following post back:

Okay, it must be the phones. I just got a phone call and the noise margin in the stats dropped to 2.0, and then my internet did not work. Internet light went Red, so I reset it through the MDC.

What's happening to the poster?

I am thinking bad filter cause if you disconnect all your phones your stats are good and you can call your house and not disconnect at all. So apparently one of the filters has failed.

one way to test

You can nail it down to one but you would have to plug in one or two of the four phones at a time and determine which set causes your dsl to go bonkers.

For instance start by getting a post it notepad and make the following lablels

• phone 1
• phone 2
• phone 3
• phone 4

first test just phone 1 & 2. If phones 1 & 2 are fine then test Phone 3&4. If one pair (either 1 &2, or 3&4 ) fails you will have it narrowed down to just those two phones. Then from there test each one of those phones individually and you will identify your culprit.

Basically what you would be doing is process of elimination. By doing it that way and making cell phone calls to your house you will pretty much eliminate the good phones and find the bad one!

If you just don't have time to screw with it, I would just replace all 4 and call it done. You can find filters at the local wal-mart for about $5 a piece, or ebay is another good place.

Solution

Main thing here and lesson learned is to be sure to disconnect the phones and see if your DSL is still disconnecting. If it is, there is a good chance there is a wiring problem or filtering problem that hasn't been resolved.
