CenturyLink Cuts Another 600 Jobs
Has cut 20% of workforce since Embarq merger
by Karl Bode Tuesday 12-Jan-2010 tags: business · telco · CenturyLink
Telecom job cuts are everywhere, but they're particularly heavy among those who support the nation's aging landline infrastructure, and for those employed by merging companies that offer said infrastructure. According to the Kansas City Business Journal, CenturyLink (formed from the merging of CenturyTel and Embarq) has cut twenty percent of their workforce in the six months since the deal became official. The latest layoffs came late last week, as the new company laid off 600 employees at the former Embarq headquarters in Kansas City. "You’re going to see head count impacts over the two- or three-year integration period," says CenturyLink's investor relations chief Tony Davis. "Those plans evolve over time," he says.

verizon and alltel

Its verizon and alltel all over again. This happened with the verizon and alltel merger. People in little rock AR lost their jobs due to the merger. The same thing will happen with century link.

Re: verizon and alltel

my father works for CenturyTel and is now in charge of the business end of both centurytel and embarq... alot going on there. Unfortunately whenever you have a buy out they have to trim the duplication of jobs. Embarq was in money problems to begin with so it prob was just a matter of time.

TWC and Comcast did it with Adelphia, SBC did it when they took over BS, SBC did it to ATT, it's something that always happens.

And you have to keep in mind, NOT all of Alltel went to VZ. the GSM areas will be going to ATT and the rest of the network will go to ATN.

Didn't see this coming...

At least it appears that most of the cuts were directed to corporate and the field/support techs were spared.

That is the point of the merger

To cut cost by eliminating redundant activities.

You are right. In mergers the company taken over always loses headquarters, sales, and IT staff. Just part of the process.

Re: That is the point of the merger

It's just funny that in this instance, the smaller company (CenturyTel) took over the larger company (Embarq). Never quite understood that one.

Re: That is the point of the merger

Was Embarq fat and inefficient? where Century Tel was lean and efficient?

either way in mergers there are always job cuts.

Pretty much. I know Embarq in this territory was geting pretty chubby all around to keep the metaphor rolling. I'd much sooner like to see CenturyTel's staff take total control of the situation which seems like the case with how things have went so far here. Even the CSR's seem to be well on the ball compared to common expectations.

I should also add that Embarq was still topping out with 3/512 service here even though this is a good size town and we are fed off the CO. So they were sorely behind. Now with the CenturyTel merger they are on the move to upgrade that and should have 10/1 service soon (and at the same price Embarq was charging for the 3/512 tier).

You do realize that any plans in your area to upgrade your speeds was done last year, pre-merger, right?

A bit belated but actually this has been going on since long before the merger. The last time we had DSL in this area with Embarq was back around '03-'04 and the top tier was still 3/512 back then for the same price it is now. I have no huge miffs with them aside from some shoddy billing practices, but as I said it seems like they have drug their feet on and probably the only reason why they just recently decided to do something (and I am merely speculating here) is due to the impending merger.

Not to mention...Embarq's user review average on this very site were on average 10 points ahead of CenturyTel's (mid 70s compared to mid 60s).

Indeed, but the scores on this site can easily be skewed in both directions in various ways so I don't hold them highly unless a company either is in the dumps or got close to 100s all across the board.
