CenturyLink Expanding 25 Mbps Bonded DSL
Broader launch supposedly this summer...
by Karl Bode Monday 10-May-2010 tags: dsl · business · alternatives · bandwidth · CenturyLink
Users in our CenturyLink forum note that CenturyLink (fresh off of their announcement of a merger with Qwest) is cooking up a new 25 Mbps downstream 2 Mbps upstream bonded DSL tier. The tier, rumors of which first popped up in Las Vegas, appears to be quietly expanding into places like Naples, Florida, and will soon be in testing in a number of additional markets like Kalispell, Montana. There's no official mention on the CenturyLink website yet, but chatter in our forums indicates the pricing could fall anywhere between $55 and $80 a month depending on your bundle options. Tipsters suggest an official launch should happen this summer, though we've got calls out to CenturyLink to try and glean some official updates.

If they can get it to work...

It will be awesome, if they get it to work and spread it through the CenturyLink network. If those prices are right those seem reasonable too...

25Mbps? When Centurylink cannot provide reliabled 3Mbps here

If you review the CenturyLink Forum, you find many customers here in Lake County, Florida and other areas that CenturyLink serves, complaining about the inability of CenturyLink to deliver the speeds, subscribers are paying for and to provide reliable DSL service? How do they expect to deliver Bonded 25Mbps DSL Service.

YMMV. Centurylink has been fantastic in my neck of the woods.

Easy.. kinda... with the amount of people bailing from land-line service, (for cellular or Voip based services) they shouldn't have a problem bonding up to 4 pairs of copper even, if they had to.. I'm sure there are plenty of free lines out there.

Not sure of the rules these days, and I speak only of California, but the phone company was required, at their expense, to provide up to 4 phone lines per customer at no "special charges assessed to the customer"... I know Minnesota, one of their states, has the same rule.

I have a feeling Century link is going to largely become more of a data centric based communications provider over that of a more traditional phone provider in the coming years. Wireless phone service is quickly becoming priced close to that of an unlimited POTS line anyway and I'm sure will be getting cheaper and cheaper as the years come.

Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers should stop thinking like Bell Heads. They can keep subscribers by creating a package that offers Two fully featured Telephone Lines and High Speed Internet access at a reasonable price.

I spoke to a contractor today working at the big box / switch on SR 44. He told me that he had just about finished the install of all the equipment for 25 Mbps service in our area of Lake County and should be "throwing the switch" soon for that speed availability.

Re: Here in Naples

I called this morning to check if/when availability would be. The rep didn't seem to tech oriented. She did state that it would be available to a broader area this summer.

How far are you from the CO? Just curious because I can only get about 6Mbps and I'm 8600 ft away. Does that sound about right? My up speed is the same though.

Re: Here in Naples

You can tell by going here:

Then getting the address for your CO and plugging that into Google Maps. I'm actually not sure how to see how many feet it in in Google Maps but I bet there is a way.

Hmm, I didn't think DSL could go that far. Maybe you are on a remote terminal or something.

I may be, I know there is a box down the street from me. I will call tonight and see if they can let me know how far I am.

But the one at 5.9 miles, she said I was running out of that. I will call to confirm tonight.

Yeah, I don't see how it's possible to get such high down speeds that far away from the CO.

You know I'm a supporter of yours.. BUT... comcast test servers don't mean much.

»results.speedtest.comcast.net/re···0882.png this is to my own state...

»results.speedtest.comcast.net/re···0942.png This is to Naples FL - not too bad for going cross country.

And one more, just for fun. »www.speedtest.net/result/810138276.png

Re: What About those with fiber?

If you are on fiber you should be able to get 20/3 (shows available in O'Fallon). It costs a bit more (extra $30/mo), but you should call and see if you could be upgraded if you wanted to. Might be able to get into a different promotion, never know.

The great northwest (FL) probably won't see this :(

I had 3M DSL for the stint for my stint with them... I enjoyed it but it was getting rather slow for me with some timeouts. I decided to go to Comcast (and it has been OK so far) for 8/1 cable internet....

Out of curiosity, I decided to see what's available at my apartment. To my disappointment, only 1.5M/512K is available (I canceled my 3.0 DSL on 3/29)... I had that once, and I would never go back to 1.5.

I just placed an order here in Tallahassee and they are supposed to install tomorrow. I'm between FSU and TCC.
