CenturyLink Expands Its 1 Gbps Deployments

Last year CenturyLink started offering 1 Gbps to a smattering of high-end development communities in places like Omaha and Las Vegas, but has been pretty ambiguous about just how many users can get the service. Last August they stated they'd be offering 1 Gbps speeds in parts of sixteen cities (including Seattle, Phoenix, Portland, Salt Lake City), but again, specific build locations and total potential subscriber numbers have been nowhere to be seen.

It's what I affectionately call "fiber to the press release." Vastly cheaper than a major deployment yet still technically not nothing, it allows companies to insist they're on the cutting edge of broadband deployment despite the fact the vast majority of their customers are puttering along on circa-2003 DSL lines with low usage caps (see our user reviews).

CenturyLink continues to expand the company's 1 Gbps service offering with an eye specifically on higher-end housing developments, though this week they've gotten slightly more specific about their plans in Utah.

"By end of year, we will build Gig into 505 developments across Utah," Jeremy Ferkin, vice president of Utah operations for CenturyLink tells FierceTelecom. "If you think in terms of average size of development that's north of 100 homes, you're looking at a fairly sizeable deployment of 1 Gbps services in the residential market."

Prices vary by market, though users can expect to pay around $80 for 1 Gbps if part of a triple play, or around $150 per month as a standalone service.

Da Gig is Real!

They just deployed it in South Minneapolis but im not willing to pay $150 per month. Right now Im on a 40/20 promo for $45 a month... so if things were "sane" and we didnt live in a capatilist nation I could get a much faster speed for the price i currently pay for.

2 more months and my promo ends. Hopefully I can get the max VDSL speed for the same price i currently pay for.

Uh what? A sane capitalist nation allows businesses to charge whatever the market will support for a product or service.

I'm sorry you can't afford gigabit service, but that's how capitalism works. Now, I can't tell if you are trolling, kidding, or just 14, but in case you didn't realize it... forcing someone to sell a product for a certain price is called a price control, and it's about as far from capitalism as you can get.

We've been mapping out the deployment in the forums. There are pockets of fiber around the Twin Cities and sightings of crews running fiber in even more places.

Re: Da Gig is Real!

essentially, its in exactly the area I figured, and its all newer homes, with higher incomes, and nicer neighborhoods. Its AT&T and Centurylink essentially cherrypicking what areas they want to drop this into knowing who will pay for it and make their uptake rates worth it. It likely won't expand much farther outside these small zones because the median income drops quite a bit within 1/2 a mile.

Re: Da Gig is Real!

Centurylink will no doubt expand it eventually. They don't really have a choice. They have been able to push FTTN for all this time but VDSL will not be able to compete with docsis 3.1.

Re: Da Gig is Real!

They sell faster VDSL speeds in some areas. I know here in Iowa they have 60Mbps and 80Mbps tiers available but it is very limited. I have heard rumors of 100 Mbps but I have not seen it available to anyone.

Slight correction, above.

Meh

Don't be in any hurry. If this slacker won't upgrade 20-year old hardware in a 50-year old building, or provide a reliable wire line to homes, why would you expect faster speed?

*The term 'High-end development communities' often means a gated enclave where the smallest, plain-Jane. house costs a minimum of $500,000.00.
