CenturyLink Switches From Dish To DirecTV
Though will still support users who stick with Dish
While CenturyLink does deliver IPTV in some locations, in most areas the telco sells Dish Network satellite TV service in bundles to try and compete with the cable industry triple play. Fresh off of their acquisition of Qwest, CenturyLink has announced that the company has swapped out their partnership for Dish Network for a new agreement with DirecTV. According to CenturyLink, the company will continue to support Dish service for those customers who choose to remain with Dish. "While we've enjoyed having DISH as our video partner, we've decided to try a new TV service that will offer our customers new features," CenturyLink spokeswoman Stephanie Meisse tells Reuters. One of those of course is access to DirecTV's exclusive arrangement with the NFL to broadcast out of market games (aka Sunday Ticket), for which DirecTV just announced a number of new enhancements.

They should offer their own service

They should come out here and offer their own service via fiber or IPTV like UVerse. I don't want to put up a dish.

CenturyLink Prism

CenturyLink does have an IPTV product, Prism. It is only available in a handful of markets, but it is a start.

Uhh.. nope.

The change in satellite TV partnership only affects new subscribers to the service. Dish bundling with Centurylink for existing subscribers will continue to be supported indefinitely.

Darn!

Figures, we're retiring in a few years to an area served by CentryLink. We were going to get their DSL and looking at adding DishTV as well. We have Dish now and prefer it to Direct. Guess we'll just have to get the DSL and order the DishTV through a local dealer. And Dish just happened to pickup the only local TV channel in the area as one of the local package choices, Direct doesn't pick up on that channel.

DirecTV (no T in the word Direc) does offer local channels and they are included the packages You're required to have 2 dishes though for local and non local. DirecTV is also cheaper than Dish.

Re: Darn!

How do you figure that?
DirecTV Choice after promo is $ 58.99
Dish for the Top 120 is $39.99
Also I don't know where it requires 2 dishes for local vs non-local as, my sister have DirecTV and gets the Choice with locals on 1 Dish

also with DirecTV you don't have to worry about losing your DVR like you do with Dish since they did steal theirs from Tivo and refuse to pay up- which its only a matter of time until Tivo sues them again and issues liens or what ever else against them.

Dish is 10 times the size of TiVo and could gobble them up if they wanted.

Re: Darn!

Yah instead they're being assholes and not paying the money that is due to Tivo. But if they were as good as all claim they would have came out with their own DVR instead of stealing TiVo's system.

Also just because you are bigger doesnt mean the little guy won't win. Tivo won't give up.

DirecTV does not carry THAT local channel while DishTV does. Also where I am now we have DishTV with locals all using only one dish.

that is the difference between 2 different companies. That i is a Super Dish. DirecTV only uses the small 18" dish. Also DirecTV uses 2 separate birds for their local and non-local channels.

NOT true any more in ANY markets - ALL new subs in those 2-dish markets now get ONE slimline dish & all HD receivers, even for the "free" non-DVR boxes for the same price as SD. Existing subs in these markets will eventually be switched out to a new single dish/HD receivers at no charge.
I am in one of these such markets & am a dealer, so I know what I'm talking about...

Then you must be looking at some OTHER kind of dish - especially considering DirecTV has NEVER, EVER, needed 2 dishes for local channels in the Cleavland DMA.

Cleavland has always had their SD locals on the 101 bird, which ONLY requires 1 18" dish.
»www.lyngsat.com/packages ··· 101.html

The HD locals require the slimline, which again, only requires the ONE slimline dish.

The ONLY time you need a 2nd dish w/DirecTV, is if you want international stuff on the 95 bird, which very few people even take.

You might want to do some better research, since you obviously don't understand where exactly locals even come from in the sky...

Re: Darn!

The DirecTV rep told me 2 18" dishes and my sister has 2 18" dishes as well in the Toledo Market. I don't need to know what birds they're on. I know that they come from different ones due to the dishes being pointed in 2 different directions. My neighbor also has 2 dishes on DirecTV. so i think you should do some research about Ohio especially since you're in IL.

Well that's obviously different that the Cleavland market then, isn't it.
And the rep told you WRONG for new subs - it does actually happen that a CSR gives out WRONG info.
I don't need to know what birds they're on. I know that they come from different ones due to the dishes being pointed in 2 different directions. My neighbor also has 2 dishes on DirecTV.
BECAUSE THEY ARE FRICKEN, EXISTING CUSTOMERS!!!
NEW subs do NOT get 2 dish installs ANY more, & have NOT for almost a year now. I know you really want to believe this, but even someone else is telling you you're WRONG:

I have - you're still wrong...

And THIS has to do with the price of eggs, how???
not in all markets yet.
YES, in EVERY, SINGLE, solitary last one of them - NO new subs get 2 dish local channels any longer

Re: Darn!

You said ALL markets get the Slim Dish.

and NO they are NOT old customers. they are NEW customers. My neighbors just signed up and moved in the house last Oct.

And no i'm not wrong. Thats why people don't do business with deals cause they don't know SHIT. They Lie just like you are currently. You think that you know that all markets use a Slim dish. When they don't. You also claim my neighbors are old customers. and they're not. They've only been a customer for a year.

And my sister has only been a customer for a year and a half.

DirecTV also wants to sell me 2 dishes for Local and non-local. Now what do you have to say about that? i'm still wrong? you prove me wrong then. But oopps! you can't cause you don't know this market.

But oopps, I think I just did...

From DirecTV's OWN technical forums:

»forums.directv.com/pe/ac ··· 10511548

Effective March 4, 2009 , the following markets moved to a 1-dish solution: Cedar Rapids, Sioux Falls and Toledo. That leaves only 2 72.5 markets left to transition - we expect Springfield to move to a 1-dish solution in mid March and Waco in late April.

(which they did)

Maybe you'll tell me it's a "different" Toledo...

But if new people are getting 2-dishes now, then it sounds like a some fly-by-nighter dumping remaining inventory - which should NOT be happening at all.

Re-read the post slowly. *ALL* markets originally on 72.5 are now simulcast on 99 and 103.

In a handful of markets a 2-dish solution will still function, but it is not required.

If you had an AU9 plus a wing dish to pick up 72.5, then nothing will need to happen -- the 2nd Dish will just be sitting there doing nothing. If folks are still relying on the 72.5W orbital slot for locals, they'll figure it out pretty quickly once DirecTV starts running crawlers on the local channels prior to shutting down transmissions on that orbital slot. (ala the DTV conversion)

DirecTV is using the Slimline AU9 Dish for HD installs which is 22.5" x 32.5" See: »www.satpro.tv/DIRECTVSWM ··· h-2.aspx

With a 5 LNB setup it picks up orbital locations 99W, 101W, 103W, 110W, and 119W.

Dish is using the 1000.4 and 1000.2 dishes that are each 19" x 24" See: »www.sadoun.com/Sat/Produ ··· int2.htm

The 1000.2 points at orbital locations 110W, 119W, 129W
The 1000.4 points at 61.5W, 72.7W, 77W

The locals at 72.5 started migrating to 99 and 103 last year. »support.directv.com/app/ ··· _id/1458

DirecTV will be vacating that space next year and the transponder frequencies will be going Dish Network to use on 72.7.

If there are DirecTV customers with a wing dish still pointed at 72.5 they should have already been contacted about getting a free replacement with a single dish solution. All new installs are single dish.

Should be and are being contacted are 2 different things. And it shows you how much DirecTV cares about their customers especially with installs being only a year old for both neighbor and my sister...and when DirecTV is telling me 2 dishes for local and non local? .... hmmmmmm...yah.

Not new for Qwest

It may be new for CenturyLink. But Qwest has been in bed with DirectV for a long time. CenturyLink probably had to pick up Qwest's contract with DirectV over the purchase deal of Qwest.
