While 'broadband for life' auction bids hit $30k

Charter's 16Mbps/2Mbps tier has arrived in central Nebraska, portions of Missouri, and in Madison, Wisconsin. User discussing in our Charter forum indicates customers are paying drastically different prices depending on the competitiveness of their market; from $55 (non-promotional, no less) to $80.

Others say they're being offered 10Mbps for $35 for twelve months if they threaten to cancel. This local Madison, Wisconsin report says the 16Mbps tier is being offered there for $69.99 bundled, $79.99 standalone. The paper breaks down local competition, including TDS Telecom, who we've reported offers $55 6Mbps WiMAX in the region:
Click for full size
TDS Telecom this year began offering WiMax fixed wireless Internet to parts of the Madison area at speeds up to 6 Mbps downstream and 3 Mbps upstream for $55 per month. AT&T offers DSL Internet service in four speeds, ranging from 768 Kbps/384 Kbps for $14.99 per month to 6 Mbps/768 Kbps for $34.99 per month. Bundling of services typically results in discounts.

About 1,000 downtown households in multiple-unit dwellings such as apartment and condominium buildings are able to get Internet service at speeds up to 50 Mpbs downstream and 5 Mbps upstream for $79.99 per month. ResTech Services, 120 W. Gorham St., provides the service wirelessly to the buildings and it's then distributed to dwellings within the buildings via ethernet lines.
Meanwhile, Charter's auction for "a lifetime" of broadband service (see previous report) has reached $30,000 with five days left. As mentioned previously, the contest's fine print states that if the company is sold after three years, Charter owes the winning bidder nothing.

Yes, people are this dumb. Next up on the auction block, tv antennas to provide a lifetime subscription to over the airways.

Fine print (We do not guarantee T.V antennas work after February 2009)

Starting price: 10,000

I have to wonder...

If you're able to drop $30k right now on internet access, are you really worried about the future price? Take that money, invest it and you'll make more money than you'll save.

Even at $50/month, that's 50 years! (yes I know price will go up and it'll be less than 50 years, but still).

Agree invest it. I have kid and that would be a great start toward a college education.

Then again if you have that much cash to piss away, you probably not worried about it.

Why?

I think anyone that could drop 30k on this could afford to go live in FIOS territory. Why bother with Charter?

Re: heck

You have to admit that this is a smart move on Charter's part. They only have to give away one Nintendo Wii, get a bunch of free publicity, and the way it's looking will make a $50,000+ sale.

Didn't AOL have a "FREE Dial-Up" for life promotion too. I think the winning bid was $14,000.

Of course I'm kidding. How extremely silly does that seem now as a comparison. How stupid would you feel had you done that.

I think a lot of the bids now are people in the know, knowing they are not forced to pay if they do "win".

Hey marko,
Look at the cool IM I got from this person:
You're also an idiot. If you think that it's not Charter's fault you're fucking stupid. Charter PAYS wvfiber for bandwidth. Charter oversells the bandwidth to their customers. IT IS THEIR FAULT FOR HIGH LATENCY. If you think otherwise you're fucking retarded. I know you're old as fuck but please, get some knowledge.

Just got it in Socal

Inland Empire--Hesperia

Just called up today, and CSR Travis said, "sure, I can check for you but I'm pretty sure it's no---oh wait, looks like it is available!"

The way he described the rate structure for my areas is as follows:

$29 for 5mb
$39 for 10mb
$49 for 16mb

That's about far, I imagine. I have been waiting for this since November!

Here's a midday speedtest:

I'm sick and EFFING tired of seeing these articles about other parts of the Country getting faster internet while I'm stuck essentially dial-up upwidth (I'm not so concerned with downwidth). AT&T BETTER GET THEIR ASSES IN GEAR!!

What about Connecticut?

When will Charter ever get its act together in the Connecticut market. They do not even offer 10MB here in the Storrs/Mansfield area. C'mon folks.

latency on an edge router is NOT ISP's fault. it is true ISP's buy bandwidth from major telco's, et al...but, ISP's DO NOT tell the telco's how to route the bandwidth or how to allocate it....you are the idiot dude.
