Charter Bankruptcy Extended
Company has until November 2, Maybe Dec. 15
by Karl Bode Thursday 15-Oct-2009 tags: business · cable · Charter
Charter's latest deadline to exit from bankruptcy was yesterday, but Charter Communications filed an amended restructuring agreement in Manhattan court yesterday that extended the deadline to November 2 -- or December 15 if the company hasn't received regulatory approval. Charter filed for bankruptcy back in March in order to shed less than half of their $21.7 billion in debt, promising at the time the reorganization would take just months. But JPMorgan and other lenders have fought the plan in court, calling it an "illegitimate scheme" to force senior lenders to finance a takeover of the company by Apollo Management, Crestview LLC, Oaktree Capital Group Holdings GP and Franklin Resources Inc.

They Will Care...

These equity companies will come to the table and the first thing they'll do is start the engine of rate increases. If you think Charter is pricey now, wait until next year if these firms have any say in the operation of the company. They want a return -- right now!

Or, they'll do as other equity firms have done in the past and that's to run up a new load of debt, use the borrowed money as their return on investment and let Charter burn to the ground (see Simmons mattress company) yet again.

Senior lenders should back a plan for complete liquidation of Charter. It's the only way to stop this game that's going on where vultures have found their way to the front of the line. Sell it all off to Comcast, TW or anyone who is capable of keeping the infrastructure intact as a going concern. Equity companies sure as hell are not interested in that, their long-term vision is three years and out.

They won't be selling anything. Charter will be Charter.

Good news! Thanks for the link.

Looks like the "equity companies" will NOT be in control .... copied from the link ... "Under the loan agreements, any group could not have more than a 35 percent stake in Charter, but Peck (the Judge) argued that funds did not constitute a group or syndicate acting together." ... so basically the "funds" or "equity companies" will NOT have control over Charter to do whatever they want.

Charter bankruptcy

Isn't Charter in flyover country? Most people here don't care if these people end up on dialup but will complain that they only have 3 choices of connectivity and none of them are FIOS.

Charter is the only Internet choice available in many rural areas. I hope this will allow them to continue to provide services.

Re: Charter bankruptcy

Charter is all over the country. California to Missouri to Texas to Minnesota to Georgia. That is only a few states. THey are also up the east coast as well.

Charter

What will the restructure mean to subscribers? Charter has already closed a number of neighborhood storefronts in Texas. There are far fewer high definition channels than some satellite providers and AT&T's U-verse. Will they continue to drop some channels?
