Charter Loses Less Money As restructuring plan continues... Bankrupt cable operator Charter Communications issued their second quarter earnings this morning, which indicate the cable operator trim its losses to $112 million on the quarter, improving on losses of $274 million one year ago. The company lost 73,300 basic video customers and the quarter, but while many cable operators balance this by gains in digital customers, Charter's digital TV subscribers also declined by 5,700. The company did end up adding 10,600 broadband and 56,900 VoIP subscribers. The company currently serves 4,929,900 TV (3,152,000 of which are digital video), 2,957,700 HSI, and 1,480,000 telephone customers.

Since all digital customers also have basic are those being counted twice or are those 4.9 million basic only customers? I'm pretty sure Charter doesn't have 8 million sub. I could be wrong.
| | | | Re: Customer numbers Per the linked article:
"As of June 30, 2009, Charter served approximately 5,361,600 customers and the Companys 12,519,600 RGUs were comprised of 4,929,900 basic video, 3,152,000 digital video, 2,957,700 HSI, and 1,480,000 telephone customers. "

|
| | | Charter has 4,929,900 video customers - 3,152,000 customers (digital video) have a set-top box 1,777,900 don't have a set-top box (coax to tv no box in the house). 3,152,000 + 1,777,900 = 4,929,900. Who knows why Karl tries to confuse everyone with " Balance this by gains in digital customers". | |

| Come on Charter! While Charter's practices are typical of the cable industry, I must say I hope they survive as they actually have great service in this area. The internet speeds are good and consistent, and they have great customer service and not bad prices. If they go away, this area (160,000 people) will probably be without cable service at all since it is considered "rural" by some carriers and is apparently not worth giving high speed services to beyodn basic (slow ass) broadband. (Verizon, you suck.) | |
| | | | Re: Come on Charter! The internet in my area is pretty stable. Video however is spotty. There have been at least three nights in the last 30 days where all digital and most analog channels have a frozen picture on the screen. Almost like some tech hit the freeze frame button and left it there for over three hours.
I HATE charter's stupid on year pro stuff. It is such a pain in the butt to have to call in and threaten to leave in order for the price to stay sane. This year I may be tempted to just switch to Dish. If Charter did not act like a highway robber, I would feel better about them.
