Charter Sale Rumors Surface Again
Fielding 'informal' inquiries from numerous parties
by Karl Bode Wednesday 12-Mar-2008 tags: business · cable · Charter
Speculation ran wild last summer that Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen would be selling debt-riddled Charter Communications, though nothing ever came of it. That speculation has apparently resurfaced, with a new SEC filing stating that Charter executives have been fielding "informal inquiries from various parties regarding investments or transactions involving the company." It of course may not be a total system sale -- interested parties may be exploring the acquisition of certain lucrative systems (LA, Fort Worth), and Charter of course remains interested in trying to eliminate 19 billion in debt.

19 Billion.... with a B

19 million, Paul would have paid that out of the rainy day fund... Or just sold a few million shares of MSFT!

At a boy Neil you and Paul go sail around the world with your money. The find a new venture to bankrupt. Oh I mean bilk the death out of while your customers suffer.

Not bad for two men who have not even reached the age of 50!

Still they have did good in the last 2 years, they shaved 1.5billion of it off.

I think what most people don't realize is that most of that debt is from purchasing of other cable outfits in the early/late 90s. Mind you approved by loan companies..

Yes its a big debt, but other communications companies have debts close to that and have been hanging on for a LONG time.

Nothing would make me happier than to see Charter go bye-bye. Anything is better than them. If they got bought I'm hoping for comcast. That's the other provider in my area.

Be careful what you wish for--if there is anything worse than Charter, it is Comcast. Since I am in the "lucrative LA system", I hope for Time Warner or Cox.

Re: 19 Billion.... with a B

charter is excellent in my area.

10mbit/1mbit and no bandwidth caps. no other options here come close.

if i were to loose charter to comcast i would be most unhappy!
and anyone else that took over would most likely lower speeds.

You're saying what I have been for a while. Comcast is the Borg of cable companies, they will assimilate every system in their until only TWC and Comcast remain. The rest of Charter will probably get sold off to mom and pop places. It'll surprise me if there's anything of Charter left after this potential sale.

The debt was from purchasing other cable system at very high prices, Charter wanted to get big fast and they did that by buying anything they could get their hands on. The side effect was that they and Adelphia bought systems well above their true value which needed upgrades and other large capital expenditures. They also bought very remote non cluster'able systems with little ability to collapse hubsites and save on economies of scale. In the end the debt is from buying systems they probably shouldn't have bought in the first place!

i think we realize that's where the debt is from. but it really doesn't matter. taking on too much debt as charter did is stupid. their stock has tanked over the past few years.

Senior Management

You have to blame senior management back in the late 90's until around 2002. Poor business decisions and fraud. They paid way to much for crap systems and then had to rebuild them on top of it.

I give Neil credit, he seems to have the company going in the right direction. Time will tell!

Wiki -The company was involved in an accounting fraud in 2000/2001 (relating to the inflation of revenue and operating cash flow and cable subscriber numbers) for which four former executives received criminal indictments in 2005. The company had been under financial pressure following a series of acquisitions; its stock peaked at $27.75 per share in November 1999, before falling to under $1 in 2002.[

No Problems for Me

I have been a Charter subscriber for 5 years with very few issues. I have the triple play. Only six months ago did I add telephone. I pay more for Telephone than when I had ATT Call Vantage but with the package costs all is cheaper. I have 10MB and get 9.9MB and 956K up all the time. I download alot of videos and other things and never have gotten a letter about abusing my connection.

So...

Who's most likely going to buy this company? Wouldn't Comcast own a bit over 50% of the market then if they bought this, or am I wrong?

Nope other GREAT deal from comcast and tw again

Re: So...

Were transition when Comcast took over other cable operations really bad? When we first got cable service after ditching DirecTV it was Comcast service but, just a few years before it was AT&T cable and Comcast bought it out. Our relatives, just before the buyout had AT&T cable and moved. When they moved, they got DirecTV at their new place, so I don't know if the service was bad when the transition happened.

comcast vs charter

I can tell you for certain, that even though Comcast could certainly be better... they aren't nearly as bad as Charter. I have relatives in both Madison and St. Louis with Charter. Their service is more expensive, their HD channels and On Demand content are FAR less than what Comcast offers (at least in Chicago) and as for the St Louis people, tons of technical and equipment supply issues. I'd say for channel offerings, Chicago is probably one of Comcast's better markets. They've also gone all digital as of last year. I suppose this is good and bad as it requires everyone with cable to have a box.
