Charter To Offer 16Mbps
$80 without TV, $70 with TV...
by Karl Bode Monday 27-Aug-2007 tags: prices · bandwidth · cable · Charter
Charter has been testing a DOCSIS 2.0 16Mbps/2Mbps cable tier they'll be deploying to areas that see FiOS competition. According to users in our Charter forum, test users in Texas say the company is charging $69.99 for the service bundled with basic TV, and $79.99 without TV.

That's the same price many existing users currently pay for 10Mbps service from the company. While Charter is currently only offering the 16Mbps tier in a limited part of Texas, the tier should be available in a number of FiOS markets "within a few months," according to a Charter insider.

BFD, Fios 15Mbps or 20Mbps/2Mbps is $49.99 in most markets or cheaper. Where's the deal ?? Hopefully they have a bundle w/TV.

so...

they're providing the same service, at a higher cost... to try and lure customers back?

Sounds like typical charter strategy.

News?

The Time Warner Cable Buffalo Division recently raised their Turbo speeds from 8 Mbps to 15 MBS/2Mbps.

Never made the news page, guess TWC needs better insiders.

Re: News?

When Charter actually does SOMETHING at all, it should be national news. I also highly doubt anyone related to Charter would be able to even open up a web browser and get to this website... or care enough to do so. They sure as hell don't care about their customers.

I say it is. My DSL is only 3Mbps/768K but it's only $24.99/month. And when fios becomes available I can get it for $29.99/month for 10Mbps/2Mbps.

On top of that, FIOS is $30 dollars cheaper for standalone for 15/2. I'm not sure how Charter sees that as competing.

Re: Pricing

I mostly agree with that.

Where I live, Charter is the only option that costs less than $100.

I have Charter Business Internet for $67 and it's not very reliable. But, I can't expect them to because of a lack of an uptime guarantee. However it's bad enough that I have a dial-up account with Copper.net just in case Charter goes out. The dial-up as backup is good enough because while I don't *always* need fast downloads, I do like to be able to do basic things no matter what.

Truth be told, there are ALWAYS other options. T1 and higher is always an option, albeit a pricey one. The question is, are there other options in the sub-$100/mo. bracket?

If Charter charged $400/mo., then I'd just go for T1, and that's probably what everyone else would do, or just not get fast Internet (among those who don't consider it important).

All I know is that when my apartment lease expires, I'm making sure I can get DSL at the next apartment. Anyone else interested in the same thing can look at whitefence.com, which can tell you what you can get based on street address.

I feel bad for you guys. So mostly charter is just taking advantage of you guys because their is no one to challenge them and make them give reasonable prices.

But with just about any cable company you can get wayyyyyy more than 3mbps for what you're spending but if you DON'T have a cellphone then i guess what you have is a pretty good deal with DSL.

Personally, price is much more important to me than speed. I find 3Mbps plenty for what I do. Browsing the web is lightning fast, and I almost never download a file more than 10MB. I probably avg a total of 10-15MB a wk or less of total downloading.

LOL. I get unlimited US/Canada calling for about $1.50 a month with my non-POTS solution.

POTS is expensive, and it is ridiculous for the telco to require you to purchase it to get DSL service.

Cheap to me, esp since its a free 6MB/s over the 10MB for the same price. Maybe YOU won't get the full speed but many do, i get better than advertised speeds.

You've got to be joking...

16/2 for $80? That's retarded...and it's in areas with FiOS competition; hopefully enough people will be smart enough to go with the 15/2 FiOS service which is $50 a month....

Man, I can't describe how much I hate Charter; the people I know who've dealt with is have never been superiorly happy with it...luckily, I'm in TWC territory (though, they don't have cable on my road...and probably never will since I'm out in the boonies).

Expensive, compared to Comcast

We're paying 66 a month here for the Comcast Performance Plus Tier, 8000/768, though with Powerboost we usually see 15000-20000 down and 2000-2500 up. We don't have their tv service, Directv is our tv provider.

i guess they saw what cablevision is doing

I guess they saw what cablevision was doing.

couple of problems though.

cablevision is offering 16.5/2 on docsis 1.1 for $50 dollars or cheaper .

also cablevision is using docsis 2 and their boost package has no cap and 5 download so why is charter only having 16/2 on docsis 2?

Way to much for my blood!

ANYTHING over $40 a month is WAY to much for me and a total waste of money, if you ask me. Most sites can't upload that fast to begin with, so just keep feeding Charter those dollars. Maybe they'll use it to fix their stuff in other areas.
