Company now says they'll donate the proceeds to Habitat For Humanity

Bids in Charter's auction for Internet service "for life" have topped $40,000, according to the company's website. It's like a train wreck we've been unable to look away from for the past few weeks: the poorly ranked cable company, mired in $19 billion in debt, has buried fine print in the auction details stating the winner is owed nothing if the company is purchased after three years, and only a portion of their bid if Charter's bought in the next 1 or 2. Some good news however: Charter now says they'll be donating the proceeds of the auction to Habitat For Humanity:
Click for full size
"The participation and awareness generated by this auction has far surpassed our expectations and we are astounded by the enthusiasm it is attracting. Online communication has become an integral part of our daily lives, and all of our services - video, high-speed Internet and telephone - contribute to our brand promise that 'Charter Brings Your Home to Life.' This campaign offers just that, for life," said Bob Quigley, Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer for Charter. "As a company committed to the communities we serve, when the auction is over, we will donate the proceeds to Habitat for Humanity, another organization dedicated to bringing homes to life."
Bidders aren't being philanthropic though, as they didn't know the proceeds would be donated (meaning some really think the service is worth $40k). This was the only archived press release in which Charter even mentioned the auction, and the charity was never mentioned on either the website or the auction FAQ (update: a mention of Habitat was added several hours after this article was written, and weeks after countless people bid tens of thousands of dollars).

In other words, we're not sure if it was their intent to donate these proceeds all along -- or if marketing decided to donate the proceeds to charity after people started noticing the absolutely absurd bid totals (we'd like to assume the former). Either way, Habitat for Humanity will win big, even if the winning bidder does not.

ugh

This just proves there are idiots out there that will buy anything even if it costs way more... even 50 years of service at $50 a month is only $30,000

Last I checked, there was such a thing as philanthropy.

At no point (unless they change it today) has the website, FAQ or fine print ever noted that the winnings would be donated to charity....

I just went to the front page of the auction site and it says it is for Habitat for Humanity right in the middle of the page.

That was just added like an hour ago after three weeks of people bidding tens of thousands of dollars.

Ok, if thats the case then I am surprised. I thought people weren't that dumb, but obviously they are to bid that high on unlimited broadband.

Actually, when this article was posted, I checked out the site and I easily found the habitat for humanity link so I was wondering what was going on.

Re: ugh

Gotcha, yeah I've been watching it for weeks, and as of this morning when I wrote it the link wasn't there...it was added with a link to today's press release sometime after my article went up.

I think they might have noticed the hits coming from our site making light of the auction...and realized that they need to shore up on the PR front.

The PR nightmare this will become is worse than their stock price. Pull up a chair, pop some corn, chill your favorite beverage and enjoy the show.

It was known internally from day 1. We just got a good chuckle watching you Karl, jump to conclusions, as usual.

That would be a lot more believable if it were true.

Just the response I expected from you Doc. We all know you're a bell employee. Believe what you want, and say what you want. Your word is not the end all and be all of the broadband world.

Re: ugh

Man, either you are so ill-informed that you can't help posting absolute rubbish, or you are one of the resident cable employees who are paid to come here and post absolute rubbish.

Either way it's absolute rubbish.

I am not, nor have I ever been an employee of any 'bell'. Not even a Taco Bell.

Although I do occasionally frequent one.

Nice try, Mr. Anon Troll.

70 years?

Can this be passed on to your kids?

That said, I love Habitat and I think it is great they are getting this money.

Re: 70 years?

Sadly, they'll never collect. Charter gets all of this publicity (and Karl, you know this was not a charity auction at the outset), the "winner" disappears without paying, and HFH gets nothing.

ha ha ha

So the winner gives Charter $40,000+. Charter gives it to Habitat for Humanity and takes the tax deduction.

Meanwhile the winner has a $40,000+ Internet Connection that is "only" good for at least 3 years.

and the winner pays tax on that $40,000 too.

If you can afford the $40,000, you can afford $50/mo...

Re: ha ha ha

they should get a T1 instead, at 500/month, $40,000 will pay for 6.6 years of T1 service. Which would be more dependable than Charter's cable service, IMO.

Bidding for Potential Publicity?

The "entity" bidding may be doing this in the hopes of getting some publicity their way if they win the auction.

heck

comcast has offered 42 dollars a month for life on there internet

to match that price youed have to have 70 years worth of service

and thats not taking into account if you adjust for inflation on the 40k since it will buy less later on if you ad in inflation

Why the donation?

The Habitat for Humanity donation is so their shareholders will have housing for the rest of their lives.

Re: Why the donation?

If the company is teetering on the brink, perhaps they should consider this strange model as an offering for all of its customers. Instead of an auction, perhaps blocks of 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of service for however many thousands of dollars that make sense to the market. Sure is a quick way to generate an infusion of cash. After all is said and done, I'm sure a significant portion of their customers would remain monthly subscribers, thereby supplying monthly income along with a huge influx of immediate capital.

...And The Winner Is...

Not necessarily the idiot -- or plant -- bidding 42K.

"Once notified, the winner must make full payment to Charter within 48 hours of notification. If full payment is not received within this time period, the next highest bidder will be declared the winner and so on until the winning bid is paid in full."

I bid $1

BTW Twiligght i bid 1.01 so u have to wait 48 hrs for me to find 101 pennies to pay them with.
