Sheltering state-run telco from competition
(old news - 01:31PM Thursday Apr 06 2006)
tags: competition · business · world · VoIP
Looking to protect its state-run telco operations from those pesky VoIP upstarts, the Chinese government has sanctioned Shangai Telecom's right to block VoIP traffic. BizReport claims the government won't issue new licenses for computer-to-phone calling services until 2008. The company behind the technology being used by Shanghai Telecom, Narus, is thrilled with the business opportunity, as evident by their Press release. In it, they claim the focus is for Shanghai Telecom to bring the "highest-quality VoIP experience to its customers."

Another company named Verso (mentioned last fall) hopes to cash-in on the p2p and VoIP blocking business, and has struck a similar deal with another un-named Chinese carrier. Verio CEO Monty Bannerman says American ISPs have shown great interest in their technology.

"They're all telling me they hate Skype and they're telling me that they want to do something about Skype," he says. "If you have something in your network that is costing you money and raiding your business model, I assure you you're going to do something about it."

Business is business....

These two companies are out to make a profit, and have a huge opportunity for themselves, like it or not. And hey, it's China, not the most liberal country out there.

Liberalism is not something one finds in a Communist country.

Oh yeah.. And whats ironic is the so called "Communist" country is going to overtake United States Of America both in economic and military power and will soon be the new super power country in the world in who knows? 5 years? 10 years?... Tsk...

Oh, you've got that right. Communist nations are indeed not liberal.
The communism/socialism duet, in theory, on the other hand is *supposed* to be the MOST liberal doctrine.

Would encrypted the voip bandwidth, similar to what's being done to bittorent bandwidth, bypass the blocking? But then again, I think Skype is already encrypted, but Verson still are able to block Skype.

Re: Would encryption work?

I don't think encryption will work. Just like bittorrent traffic, Skype behaves in a certain way and ISPs can usually find it and throttle it to death.

The problem is that a censorship driven, communist country that blocks technology in order to allow government controlled telecoms to flourish is still beating the US a Democratic, "free" that doesn't censor and supports capitalism.

Something is inherently wrong with that.

No doubt China is hot right now, but it won't last forever.

One of the reasons China is flourishing, is it is still an emerging country. Environmental laws are weak, wages are low, and when it benefits the state, restrictions on manufacturers are light. Don't be surprised if in the next 10 years, the bubble in China bursts like in Japan.

China's biggest problem is they can not feed and house their exponentially growing population. Arable land is being gobbled up at a rate that makes the housing boom here in the US look like, well, I can't think of an analogy.

The day will come when China can't feed their people anymore, and guess what country has the most productive farm land in the world? Yep, the US.

I do predict grain and foodstuffs will be the essential commodity of the 21st century, with the US taking the lead in feeding the world's population.

MAN, did I just go off topic or WHAT?!?!?!

Sorry about that.....

Re: American broadband sucks?

China IS the Worlds largest producer of Wheat, then India and then the US.

China is mostly self sufficient in rice production with few imports.

The US is not self sufficient in any food stuffs it also has to import water from Canada.

China is also the Worlds largest producer of grains.

China's population is going DOWN.

China is thousands of years old.

I think you need to do some more research you are way off in many things.

It is true China produces the most wheat but there is a caveat to this, read on:

Re: American broadband sucks?

That is true, which is why I mentioned the fact that China is all but capable of supporting itself with its rice.

The US would not be able to produce enough wheat for China let alone the rest of the world.

What are you talking about, you pull this out of your ass. We are the Biggest agriculture producer in the world, and if we wanted to feed the world we could. Ex cuss me if we were paid to feed the world we could. You just said everything that is not true, how can you say that China's population is going down, every country's population is on the rise. I think you need to read a history book and look up the population levels. I am blown away by your ignorance, i think you top the list.

Re: American broadband sucks?

Are you serious?

Everything I posted is a fact. Ignorant bullheaded Americans like you make the rest of your country look stupid. You are NOT the biggest agricultural producer in the world, get over it.

Do you even know where China is? Is it that difficult to believe that China and India both out produce the US when it comes to food stuffs?

Please feel free to post contrary evidence to what I posted.

By the way if you are going to call me ignorant AT LEAST spell properly. WTF is "Ex cuss"?

Re: American broadband sucks?

Please, don’t beat your drums on China! Despite their agricultural power they can’t even feed everyone within their borders; I mean what’s a bowl of rice worth nowadays? Don’t post or give reference to mere numbers; they do not represent reality or change the reality in present China.

China is what it is, a nation of deceit where people are worth no more than speck of dirt. No wonder to Chinese the word “democracy” and most importantly “freedom” is as foreign as “capitalism” is to Canadians.

Be careful whose side you’re on! I prefer a fork over chopsticks anyways….

The flip side of this is that China's economy is entirely dependant on consumption of its exports to the USA. If people in this country ever tire of cheaply made, low quality Chinese products... then China is going to have some very serious problems.

Chinese business is simple

Think of it all as a racket. Every business is connected to the gov't by the hand they grease. If you offend a company that greases a powerful hand then you're shut down. No protest... no appeal... nothing. Your only recourse is to grease that same hand more. If you can't... you lose.

vpn might be the solution

I wonder when the Voip providers will start using vpn connections from there ATA terminals to there servers. It would make it near impossible to say what is being transmited in that tunnel. They can guess based on where the trafic is going and with Ciscos deep apacket analyst it supposed to even figure out the type of traffic. it would be a pain in the arse for ISP to try and block traffice that they cant read because it encrypted and probably the only option voip providers have.

The future...wwoooo....

If China keeps blocking ports and IP ranges at their present rate, pretty soon they won't have any internet at all. Flashback to the 80's!!! yay!
