| priorities I don't understand why it really matters. Do the press need to view Amnesty Internationals site while they are in China? No. The press can write anything they want, that is a big step, and that is what really matters. I am guessing if the rest of the country can't view amnestyinternational.com, then it's not that easy to "flip a switch" to let 1000 journalists view it. Get the priorities straight. | |

Sounds like a perfect recipe for journalism to happen. More news will happen then just what the government censors allow through. That's the whole point of the unfiltered internet access.
That...plus one of the conditions that the IOC had originally places on granting China the 08 Olympics is that they wouldn't do exactly what they are doing. But the IOC, being the spineless, ball-less cowards that they are are now back peddling saying that they only meant free access to the Olympic sports related sites.

Beijing National Stadium, the "birds nest" that is the main stadium for the upcoming Olympics started planning in 2002 and broke ground around Christmas of 2003. So that means it's been under construction for the past 4 1/2 years. Other infrastructure improvements have also been in the works for nearly as long.
It's just not practical to have a required 4+ year window for a backup site.

It's just not practical to have a required 4+ year window for a backup site. The NOC of the 2nd country can do the planning - they're a sunk cost anyways. I'm not saying that by any means the backup would be as elaborate and such as the primary site. If there isn't enough time to build new Olympic stadiums, then a much cheaper and quicker plan would preferably involve retrofitting existing stadiums. Or even simpler yet, go back to Greece (which now has modern, large enough facilities) as a standard backup. Frankly, the odds of the backup being used would never happen. As it is right now though, you have the IOC not doing anything because they never had a contingency for what everyone knew was going to happen. -- "What makes us omniscient? If it's going to be like this every year, they should just hold the Olympics in Greece or Rome every year (as a nod to the ancient origins of the games) so people will start focusing on the competitions instead of where the competiton is being held.

| CHINA: Hotels to Spy on Olympics Guests
More good news from CHina:
Kansas Senator Sam Brownback reiterated accusations Tuesday that China is forcing foreign-owned hotels to install electronic eavesdropping equipment ahead of next month's Olympics.
The network monitoring equipment, which Brownback claims includes both hardware and software, will allow the country's Public Security Bureau to monitor the Internet activities of guests and collate records of what they do online.
"The Chinese government has put in place a system to spy on and gather information about every guest at hotels where Olympic visitors are staying," the Republican senator said in a statement. "This means journalists, athletes' families and other visitors will be subjected to invasive intelligence gathering by the Chinese Public Security Bureau."
Brownback first made these accusations in early May, without citing the names of any of the hotel chains allegedly involved. He said that he now has copies of translations of the original order, which "alludes to harsh punishment for failure to comply with the order," the statement said.
"The hotels have asked us to preserve their anonymity; in order to protect their safety, and in return for their courage in coming forward, I cannot divulge their identities...On the other hand, these hotel chains have invested millions of dollars in their Chinese properties, and while they wish to find a way to reverse this order, if they are specifically identified, they could face severe retaliation by the Communist government," Brownback said.
Brownback's accusations book-end allegations made in June by two U.S. Congressmen that China-based hackers had attacked computers in their offices, including ones that may have contained information on Chinese dissidents.

| Well what did you expect The IOC saw BIG dollar signs when they gave the Olympics to china (notice the little n). The amount of money the networks are paying along with sponsors like GE, etc was the driving force behind the decision. The chines say "yeah yeah yeah" in the talks but when the time comes, it's their country and they can do what they want. And who can stop them?
The bottom line is the IOC %#&^d up. When they were all sitting there in their managers meeting saying "yeah yeah yeah" someone should have stood up and said "it sounds too good to be true).

| . . . and even MORE good news about China quote: Most drive-by malware comes from China, Google says
SAN JOSE, Calif.--A analysis by Google of Web sites that have malware found most of the malicious drive-by activity is due to computers in China, an engineer for the search giant said at the Usenix security conference on Wednesday.
About 67 percent of all the sites that secretly drop malicious software onto visitors' computers are located in China, as are 64 percent of the compromised servers, said senior staff engineer Niels Provos during a presentation here at the event.
"Web based malware is a significant problem and...there is no real good proactive defense against this," Provos said.
Between January and October 2007, Google's malware analysis of 66 million unique URLs found 3.5 million had malware, he said. There was a 90 percent detection rate and the false positive rate was 0.1 percent, according to Provos.
The analysis is part of Google's efforts to steer Web surfers clear of sites with malicious software that can install malware on their computers and turn them into zombies on a botnet, which is a growing problem on the Internet.
