Cisco Slams Wimax
As well as Broadband over Powelines
(old news - 01:18PM Wednesday Nov 03 2004)
tags: hardware
Cisco CTO Charles Giancarlo voiced his thoughts on several emerging broadband related technologies, including Wimax, BPL, and Ultra-Wideband. Giancarlo isn't thrilled with Intel's Wimax, saying other third-generation wireless technology will already be deployed by the time WiMax hits the streets. He calls BPL a "non-market" and that "consumers are not responding to it," though does seem optimistic about the potential for Ultra-Wideband.

It is a spin by Cisco because they do not have a WiMax story to tell.

Tell me which wireless technology is he talking about that will make WiMax obsolate?

- Bluetooth? (short range)
- Ultrawide band (authorized short range only)
- Wi-Fi (does not really compete with WiMax)
- 3G Wireless (old story, still waiting, too costly for speed...)

Cisco is afraid?!

If Cisco has something on the place it needs to bring it out.
Cisco has been very slow on wireless technology and now that Intel is sinking its teeth into it Cisco is afraid.

Re: Cisco is afraid?!

It's not fear...it's plain old greed.

If you read the article Cisco admits that they are 'heavily invested' in an ultrawideband startup and that Cisco "invests where it sees the most promise" to the exclusion of everything else around them, even if it could potentially be a better product then what they chose to invest in.

Fear that their greed will take some effort to satisfy, and that its customers will have more alternatives.

The pot calls the kettle black

It's ironic that a Company that for years had massive SNMP holes in it's router software until recently would choose to publicly trash other, competing technologies as being 'less then desirable'.....

From the linked article in the story: "Giancarlo says that Cisco sees ultrawideband as a more attractive wireless technology, noting that Cisco invests where it sees the most promise. "We had an investment in an ultrawideband start up." While Giancarlo did not name the company he referred to, Cisco did invest in XtremeSpectrum Inc., which Motorola Inc. purchased a year ago. That company spent several years working in concert with Cisco lobbying for the UWB standard.

It appears that Cisco is only supporting technology it's invested heavily in to the exclusion of everything and everyone else that may disagree with them...or have a better competing product.

Greed makes the world go around I guess.

Are you kidding me. Have you ever checked out Cisco's IOS. They support stuff just for the sake of saying that they can inter-operate with others. As far as I am concerned they do more to play well with others than most other companies out there.

Sure Cisco may spend more time and effort on solutions that directly impact their bottom dollar but what viable company doesn't.

belushi See Profile: Why don't they instead as you say "support stuff just for the sake of saying that they can inter-operate with others"? and support WiMax & BPL as well instead of trash talking them??

FYI: The older versions of Cisco's IOS were and are problematic in a wide vareity of areas, but that's beyond the scope of this thread to debate, except to say that I agree with your statement 100% only about the newer (post-SNMP bug) versions. Cisco can and does some pretty amazing things with technology....when properly motivated it seems.

need a shower

Was forced to meet with a cisco guy to pitch their IDS after we had selected another, more capable system. Felt like I needed a shower afterward!

Yeah, I know everyone there isn't like that hack and other places have them too but seeing this story reminded me of it.

Cisco Doesn't Want Us To Have Options

Fewer options mean ISPs can get away with treating us worse.

Higher rates lower speeds.

Which means ISPs will have more money, so Cisco can bill them more for the same equipment.
