Citywide Wi-Fi Reporters Recap 2007 MuniWireless.com's top five stories of the year MuniWireless.com did well for itself in 2007, establishing the site as a major provider of news about citywide wireless networks. They have been reporting on the topic all year long and have just posted what they believe to be the top five stories on the issue for the past year. Interestingly, number one on the list was iPhone news which they argue will drive increased demand for wireless connectivity in all cities. Another top story was the comparison between three different models of municipal Wi-Fi which are currently being tested out. This goes hand-in-hand with the story of the failed model which caused EarthLink to head out of this market.

3 edits | WiMAX or other 3G/4G I feel sorry for cities suckered into WiFi deployments. It's just not designed to be city wide. If city govts are willing to subsidize 3rd parties to build WiFi networks, they may as well subsidize Sprint/Clearwire to build out WiMAX in their city and offer discounts to those whose billing zipcode resides in the city.
Cities could offer light poles for WiMAX repeaters. They could install their own WiMAX repeaters on govt buildings and city-owned properties.
WiFi just doesn't cut it. I have EVDO and never have to look for a hotspot - anywhere. It's THE way to be connected metrowide, but at $60/month it's pricey. Subsidized access might be the solution. WiMAX is modeled in a way that city govts could more easily get involved in the deployment. If Intel has their way, you won't be able to buy a laptop w/out WiFi/WiMAX next year in the way you can't buy a laptop today w/out WiFi.

| let the market set the stage as much as i would like to having city Wi-Fi, I think it should be built using a free market model, why should a person that will never wanted or used a wireless or wired network pay for it through more tax! | |

Funny... you read this and you'd think the iPhone was the first phone ever to offer wifi connectivity. -- Only SHATNER is Kirk.

iPhone customers pay extra for EDGE data but, once they can receive 3G speeds for this extra cost, WiFi capability will be much less important.
