Clearwire Creatively Renamed 'New Clearwire'
Branding department apparently didn't work much overtime...

This week's FCC approval (pdf) gives Clearwire the opportunity to create a new national wireless broadband juggernaut, flush with cash from such industry giants such as Google, Intel and Comcast. Despite the fact their existing name is largely associated with the mediocre reviews for their fixed WiMax service, and they had the chance to completely re-brand the new company, Clearwire will now simply be named New Clearwire Corporation. So much for the work put into "XOHM."

Even though the company has just one commercially available mobile WiMax market up and running, New Clearwire CEO Ben Wolff says he wouldn't trade places with AT&T or Verizon and their oodles of cash, high powered lobbyists and clear LTE migration paths:
quote:
He said he wouldn't trade his own position with those of mobile giants Verizon Wireless and AT&T Mobility. The main reason is New Clearwire's spectrum holdings, which he said include more than 100MHz in many markets and more than 150MHz in some. That compares with chunks of only about 25MHz acquired by Verizon and AT&T in various markets through this year's auction of 700MHz frequencies, he said. Wide swaths of radio frequencies make it possible to provide high speeds to more customers more economically, Wolff said.
Wolff has a lot of work to do, both in deploying a successful network, but also in fighting off AT&T and Verizon, who'll be doing everything in their power to put New Clearwire out business. Hopefully for consumers that means a reduction in traditionally steep 3G wireless broadband prices.

Re: XOHM is a cool name..

Unusual but cool? I don't know.

I am not even sure how to pronounce it.

Is it pronounced with a "Z" Zohm or "X" Ecks-ohm.

I hate stupid names like that.

It's like they are trying to be cool and only cool people will know how to say it.

Just like Verizon FIOS. Is it Fee-os or Fi-os?

Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum Verizon's name is really dumb.

PR guy

How much do you think that the PR guy got paid for thinking up this awesome new title for the company?

Re: PR guy

Unfortunately it sounds like someone pointed out to that PR guy at the last minute that the FCC needed a name for this new entity before it could be approved.

Who cares about names

As long as it means I can get Mobile WiMAX sooner rather than later or have the competition lower their high speed data plans they can call the new company "steaming pile of crap" for all I care. I would still user their services if they offer the best wireless data service (which WiMAX will).

Who gives a crap about the name or if it is cool. Cool is when I can do something with the service. I don't care what they call it, it will still be WiMAX to me.

The name will remain the same

The new company will not be called "New Clearwire" it will keep the original name Clearwire. In the SEC fillings they refer to it as "New Clearwire" only to Differentiate between the old company the the new. This can easily be seen if the SEC filling is actually read before inaccurate information is posted.

Do your homework, dude

whomever writing this article needs to do their homework.
"largely associated with the mediocre reviews for their fixed WiMax service"? Clearwire has not commercial-launched either fixed or mobile wimax--- where did you get those mediocre reviews?

Re: Do your homework, dude

Hey, Dude.
Clearwire has not commercial-launched either fixed or mobile wimax.
Clearwire has been offering fixed WiMax service for several years, and mobile WiMax in Baltimore for several weeks. You're actually posting from a fixed WiMax IP on the very fixed WiMax service you claim doesn't exist. That's a new one for me.

Re: Do your homework, dude

You’re wrong buddy! Fixed Wimax is 802.16d. Mobile Wimax is 802.16e. The Fixed network you're referring to is Expedience witch is a technology invented by Next Net and owned be Motorola. Get your facts straight buddy! The only market Clearwire has Wimax in is Portland Oregon and even there it’s not open to the public yet. It is being used for testing and investor demonstrations. Baltimore is the only Wimax market Clearwire is associated with and that is ran by the XOHM team at Sprint. Do your homework dude!
