Clearwire today announced that the Mobile WiMax company is now offering its new wireless broadband service in Honolulu and Maui. According to Clearwire, the launch covers about 800,000 of the 1.2 million people in the State and about 1,759 square miles over three islands: Oahu, Maui, and Lanai. The company also says they've brought the service to the Seattle area, that launch covering the areas between Tacoma to Bellingham (roughly 120 miles) and from the Puget Sound to Issaquah (17 miles). Clear service offers speeds between 3 and 6 Mbps (assuming your signal quality is good) with home and mobile pricing plans ranging from $35 to $75.

Salespeople

Has anybody had a chance to talk to the salespeople for this company? They can't answer a single question (and I'm not that technical minded). It's like they said, you want a job.... come work for us, no training needed!!!

Re: Salespeople

If you only knew how close you are to the truth!

Check out how they recruit:

I recently canceled my store's Clear authorized rep contract when our small town was flooded with salespeople from multiple companies from Atlanta and Chicago. They apparently want ex-car-salesmen reps instead of a real storefront with a knowledgeable staff so I'll leave them to it.

It's a shame their sales model is so sleazy. The product is actually pretty good.

Have they finished the just announced Philadelphia market ?

Their map coverage shows coverage for me but when I go to put my zip code it says not available.
Was this meant just for the City or the suburbs too?

It is for the metro area. But I don't think they have the transmitters up everywhere that the map shows. That should be false advertising, but they seem to lie consistently on their coverage maps and get away with it.

Did they forget us or what, they skipped right from LV to HI.

What's the deal?

Re: CA ?

They're saving the really scary and congested markets for 2010.

Getting a running, flying leap at major metro markets with Chicago, Seattle and Philly first before handling the real big boys like San Fran, LA, NYC....

Ping times

The ping times are pretty bad in all markets. Its like they are routing through a server on the moon.

Re: Ping times

No, that would be at least two seconds.

Seriously though, we're talking about a mobile broadband tech, not WiFi or a fixed broadband tech. So ping times are going to tend to be high, but in return you get low jitter even when there are lots of folks on the cell.

Re: Ping times

Wimax is capable of closer-to-wifi-ping times. They've had issues in some markets, but not all of them. Here in Atlanta I generally ping sub 100ms to most US hosts.

Not bad..

At least Seattle has a useable alternative when Comcast starts banning its customer for a year for just using their connections.

Clearwire / CLEAR has been in Hawai`i for years

I'm at a loss. Clearwire / CLEAR has been in Hawai`i for over three years. I believe (hunch) that Clearwire bought the existing WiMAX service offered on Maui from atop Haleakala. Maui has had WiMAX for probably eight years.

I think this was a poor PR attempt to get more business.

Re: Clearwire / CLEAR has been in Hawai`i for years

You're probably thinking of Clearwire's 3g service. CLEAR has only been around as a company a couple years, and its first WiMax offering was in Portland. Besides, the Wimax standard wasn't even ratified until 2004.

Lanai?

It's a wonder Lanai has voice wireless service and now WiMax?

iPhone 4G device attachment

Why not? If you can do it with Satellite, you can do it with 4G. Some data is better than no data, dropped calls, and 2G speeds.
