Clearwire Looking For More Cash
Funding partnership with T-Mobile in early stages...
by Karl Bode Monday 28-Sep-2009 tags: business · alternatives · wireless · Clearwire
Saul Hansell at the New York Times offers up a good primer on what's happening with Clearwire, which hopes to offer Mobile WiMax service in twenty five markets by the end of the year. Hansell notes that funding for the network build continues to be a sticky issue, though he talks to sources who confirm last week's news that T-Mobile could emerge as a funding partner in exchange for spectrum access. The Times also links back to our story from a few weeks ago highlighting how customers in a lot of the early Clearwire launch markets aren't particularly impressed with speed or latency.

Re: DT?

Actually, the article also said Comcast, Bright House, Time Warner Cable was going to offer Clearwire as an extension of their home broadband. Google and Intel also invested in Clearwire. There is a possibility of a parital sale to TMobile but not a clear one.

Sprint owns about 55-60% of Clearwire and wants to maintain it.

The biggest problem is LTE is being put forward by VZ and AT&T Wireless that is supposedly superior to Wimax.

Re: DT?

I'm not sure about 'superior', however, I'd say the LTE has a lot more backing than WiMAX goes from the global Telecomm industry.
The one good thing about Clear/WiMAX is that Sprint/Clear has a LOT of spectrum to use for their deployment (~100MHz worth), while most carriers are lucky to typically have ~50MHz of cellular/PCS, then some AWS and some more 700MHz (multispectrum handsets?). For some 'good' use out of HSPA+ or LTE, 20MHzx2 (40MHz) should be a minimum.

Cash problems?

How can there be cash flow problems with the kind of investments made by carriers such as Comcast, Time Warner, Intel, Google, and Bright House? They pumped investments into Clear as a hedge for their own markets, and its "Clear" that they have also integrated the service into their own customer offerings.

Is someone at Clear sucking all the cash up? Smells of mis-management. Too many "entitled" managers running the company and board. Just another personal cash conduit for them.

Re: Cash problems?

There is no immediate cash problem for Clearwire. Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Bright House, Google, and Intel collectively invested $3.2 billion last year. Clearwire has a deployment plan to use that money through at least the end of 2010, probably into 2011.

The cash problem stems from the fact that a new national wireless network will cost at least $5-6 billion (wireless isn't cheap). Clearwire will need more money by the end of 2010, to fully build out their network.

I don't think this is be an enormous problem. Sprint has stated they want to retain majority ownership of Clearwire, and are willing to invest $2-3 billion in it. Also the economy should be a lot better by then, so more sources of capital would be available as well.
