Clearwire Not Ruling Out LTE
Won't get bogged down in standards war, says CEO
by Karl Bode Tuesday 02-Dec-2008 tags: business · Clearwire
With the XOHM/Clearwire deal finalized, news is coming fast from the carrier, who most recently noted that they'd be using the "CLEAR" brand for their new mobile WiMax service, and deployment could be slowed due to tight credit markets. Company CEO Ben Wolff is making the media rounds, saying in a conference call that the carrier won't rule out using LTE technology, if that's what is required to survive. "In the future, our network vendors will be able to deliver to us equipment that runs both mobile WiMax and LTE," says the CEO. "If LTE truly becomes a global standard, as WiMax has, Clearwire will be well positioned to provide LTE."

Gunning for good PR

Wasn't there an article or two floating around about the equipment vendors providing equipment capable of both LTE and wimax? If thats true then Clearwire is just taking advantage of the situation by claiming they have "future proof" facilities in place.

The Clear network is going to be an "Open Network"...

Yup. There's equipment that can work for both WiMAX and LTE: »twurl.nl/ajw4fr

(mentioned in podcast and take a look at the photo in the post)

LTE and Wimax are so close in protocols to each other that if one fails it would be very easy to just use the other. The only thing that will have to be replaced are the radios and the controller cards. I think the one that dominates the market will be the carrier with the most amount of spectrum available.

WiMax is better for consumers, LTE is better for Telcos

Although I despise the whole LTE thing because I know the Telcos are pushing it more for business reasons (more control, more restrictive, harder for open competition), they are very similar so why not. I would love to see WiMax become more the defacto standard because it will be better for consumers.

FDD WiMAX

WiMAX is currently a TDD wireless technology but WiMAX Forums is getting ready the FDD standards for WiMAX and LTE is based on FDD.
