Clearwire, Sprint Expand 4G Further
New market launches in FL, DE, MI, CA
by Karl Bode Monday 02-Aug-2010 tags: business · wireless
Both Clearwire and Sprint this morning launched press releases stating they've expanded their joint Mobile WiMax into Modesto and Stockton, California, Jacksonville, Florida, Wilmington, Delaware, and Grand Rapids, Michigan. According to Sprint, these launches bring their total number of 4G-served markets to 48. Both companies say they're still on track to deploy the Mobile WiMax service to the New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Boston later this year. You can find a state-by-state market coverage breakdown for Sprint here and for Clearwire here.

come on...this should have been the very first city that came live...i have a feeling that verizon will get to nyc faster than unclear...but nobody wants to pay MOST LIKELY $50 for 15GB cap;(

Re: new york city???

They are working on NYC and it's unofficially active in some areas. Should release by end of year or sooner. You probably would not have wanted NYC to be first though. They were using much less backhaul in the first cities. They are now doing up to 100Mbps backhaul in newer rollout cities.

It's highly likely that VZW LTE will cost more as they already said LTE will be sold in 'buckets of data' and for data cards only initially. There will be no unlimited option, so likely is not going after cable market. Clear is unlimited for now and if they add caps, will likely be better than VZW since Clear has more spectrum.

I'm paying $40/month for Clear fixed home modem and get 10-15Mbps, unlimited for now. $10 extra on EVO phone doesn't sound so bad given the new caps the others are coming out with.

Now

All they need to do is expand their coverage area like the promised down here and it will all be good. Sucks when your internet is out for 3 damn days.

All they need is to make the only 4g phone available to buy online. Or atleast pre-order.

Samsung really screwed HTC and Sprint with this one.

I would be interested in this

As it would allow me to cut TWC and ATT out completely for home and mobile internet.

I did that recently. I first cut the cable modem and downgraded to basic HD cable with DVR but then got rid of cable altogether for Netflix/Hulu/Playon.

Was paying $140/month for cable and 7Mbps cable modem. Now paying $40/month for 10-15Mbps Clearwire, $10 for Hulu Plus and $12 Netflix with 4-5 BR discs a month. Don't miss cable at all.

Re: I would be interested in this

That's basically what I want to do as well, until I can get fiber to the home.

Do you actually get 10-15mb with clearwire?

I know if I fire up my FiOS at any point in the day I will get 15/5mb but I have yet to see Clearwire or any wireless service live up to the bench marks and I deal with wireless services on a daily basis due to work.

I would hate to be at the mercy of Clearwire for my only internet.

Re: I would be interested in this

Yeah, for now I actually get 10-15Mbps as I'm only a couple blocks from a site, am above the treeline and they are apparently doing 100Mbps backhaul at that site. So most Clear customers probably will not get that.

»Best way to test network performance

I'm not counting on it sustaining that long term and am just waiting for them to oversubscribe, but with large backhaul, it might sustain for a while. If not, I can always go back to TWC as I'm not under contract.

Denver coming soon

I noticed the signs for "public hearings" on Clearwire's request to add microwave antennas to some high-tension power line "poles". It doesn't list Denver as a city with coverage but it looks like it's coming very soon. The towers are right behind my house (at the bottom by the t in feet on the PDF). I'd be tempted to pick up an Overdrive unit and drop my DSL at home if it works as well as people say.

Just activated today

I live in Jacksonville and it is a rather massive city. It so happens I ordered Clear today and I'm in a gray area, so my downstream speeds are hovering around 2.5Mbps at the moment, but my area will be lit 100%. As a former independent dealer for Clearwire, I can say even using the Clear service in a non guaranteed area is much better than their old service. I can actually maintain decent torrent download speeds (200KB/sec). I know it's not GREAT like the 1.2Mbps I get at the office, but all things considered and as a former user of the old service, this is a step in the right direction.

Thanks for sharing your experience with Clear! It's really interesting to hear how much of a difference the 4G actually makes.

Looking forward to Clear launching in Boston. I have tested it in one spot getting over 3 meg down. I was hoping it would launch in Nashville as I am going there Thursday, It may be live in spots, I will see.

MetroPcs LTE a

Boston will have 4g from Clear, LTE from Verizon and MetroPCS by the end of 2010.
Metro PCS will offer LTE pre-paid by the end of 2010 in Boston and other markets starting in September in Las Vegas in rolling market by market launch. The Boston area should have it by Nov around the same time Verizon Launches LTE. You will have the option to have services in contract or no contract products and at different prices and data caps. Metro PCS will have unlimited LTE service. I set up a metro phone last week and chatted with the sales guy.

Funny for something that sucks so bad, I'm getting faster speeds on my cell phone then most DSL subscribers get.
