Clearwire To Get Another $1.5 Billion
Sprint and cable partners pony up more cash...
Sprint is preparing to pump at least another billion into Clearwire
, and Sprint partners Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Intel are collectively ponying up another $500 million. There have also been rumblings that Clearwire has looked to T-Mobile as a new funding partner
. Judging from some of the analyst estimates we've seen
, this may only be the beginning of new funding rounds. While most of that money is going to go toward building out the network, as we examined last week
, some indoor coverage issues suggest they may want to save some money for outdoor mountable antenna and femtocell deployment.
Re: Femtocell...What for?

Why would anybody purchase a femtocell for their WiMAX service. Wouldn't that mean you'd have to keep a cable or dsl account going for the backhaul? Kind of defeats the purpose of getting home service with decent speeds and price. Personally, I can't understand the current push for femtocell for WiMax or 3G. "Here, buy our femtocell unit and pay us an extra $30/mth after paying a hundred bucks for the device and you can get great indoor reception". No Thanks!

Re: They said that over here
said by Duramax08:That (and some other horror stories) concern me quite a bit since I am in the San Antonio area as well and was considering getting Clear. Currently I get great reception on my Sprint phone, so I would hope that Clear (since Sprint is a majority stakeholder) would have antennas on that tower.
they are putting towers 1.5 miles away from each other. Yesterday my signal went out at 3pm. It was still down at 7PM so got on my dial up and asked them whats going on. The rep said I was not in the coverage area. WTF? I was in the coverage area all week last week till now. My friend checked for me online and it says its available. I finally got 1 bar on the modem which is stable for awhile. Today is the last day of the trial period, Dont know what the hell to do. To bad they didnt put an antenna port on the back of the modem. That would help out alot of people like me.
Hope the pony up some money to do what they are telling everyone here in town.
Re: Layoffs announced
said by StubbyinKCMO:No. A billion (1,000,000,000) is one thousand million (1,000,000).
Tonight on the local news (Kansas City where Sprint main campus is located), they said that Sprint is laying off 2000 people company wide.
Here locally that means about 400 people getting laid off. The reason given over the air? Need to save money to be financially viable as a company. No kidding.
And yet, I read stories like this were the company that is going bankrupt from spending money like water, is paying 1 BILLION for a venture capital investment.
They said that by laying off these 2000 workers they would save about 100 Million in the coming year. 100M=/=1 Billion. So where are they getting the extra cash from?
Someone is putting the cart before the horse on this deal.
And one trillion is one thousand billion.
100 million is not equal to 1 billion. 1 Billion is equal one million times one million. That is, 1 billion = 1000,000,000,000 = 1012. But in the American System, 1 billion is one thousand times one million. That is, 1000,000,000 = 109. It looks like that in America, does not exist such a thing called one thousand million. But of course there is. One billion and One thousand millions are two different numbers. I can say One thousand million, because million covers thousand, as well as I can say One hundred thousands since thousand covers hundreds.
So, I don't believe that 1 Billion = 1000,000,000 but is definitely not 100 million
