Clearwire To Launch WiMax/Wi-Fi Router To launch within weeks, no price tag set yet... Clearwire is getting ready to launch a new Cradlepoint home router designed for their "Clear" Mobile WiMax service, that will convert the WiMax signal for use by up to eight Wi-Fi devices. According to Unstrung, the company is expecting to release the device in the "coming weeks," though there is no word on price yet. Clearwire's David Barkoe directs my attention to this video of the router, taken during Clearwire's Portland launch event earlier this week.

No big deal here. Surprised if there will not be multiple products from various vendors selling these devices as Wimax rolls out around the country.

| Re: Wimax/WiFi router same as a DSL/WiFi or Docsis/WiFi device Not exactly. In order to use the WiFi modem, you need the correct drivers on the router, it needs to connect via a slightly-more-nonstandard protocol than Ethernet, and generally be more complex than an Ehternet-in router. Hence the cost of such mobile broadband routers so far: well over $100. Wonder how much this one will be. Great idea though. | |

A few questions Only 8 does that mean that its going to pass public IP's via wi-fi? or that its a crippled Wi-Fi ap?
Will it have any wired connections?
Also what will be the monthly cost?
This could be interesting.

| Re: Wimax/WiFi router same as a DSL/WiFi or Docsis/WiFi device Going by previous CradlePoint stuff, it may not actually have a wired connection. If youwant to hook upwired computers, you get the home-based solution, which is faster and cheaper anyway.
Monthly cost = cost per month for your Clear mobile service.
Only 8 people...hmm...that could be due to considerations about having the highest speed available for everyone. 8 devices is a fair amount anyway. If those 8 devices were passed public IPs then...wow that'd be amazing.

| | I luv WiMAX but..... WiMAX rocks but Clearwire really seems to be wavering here. The Telco industry is fighting the PR battle by dangling LTE but no matter WHAT they say, it's still at least 3 to 5 years away.
Come on Clearwire, grow some balls and go for it! WiMAX is superior to anything out there now and as long as you have a significant presence in 3-5 years you don't have to worry about LTE.
The fact WiMax is only in 2 small cities now is ridiculous. I would sure like to know exactly what the hold up is.
