While business customers get service in Chicago...

As they've done in other markets, it looks like Clearwire has brought their Philadelphia Mobile WiMax network online ahead of an official launch later this month. Several users have written in to note that Clearwire's coverage maps now list Philadelphia as up and running. The not so official launch comes as Clearwire launched Mobile WiMax in Chicago yesterday -- albeit for business customers only (for now). The two launches add some major city punch to a launch list that consists of a lot of smaller Texas markets. With the Chicago launch, Clearwire's quickly moving toward their 2009 25 market goal.

Service is (or soon will be) available in Atlanta and Milledgeville, GA; Baltimore; Boise; Chicago; Las Vegas; Philadelphia; Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro, NC; Honolulu and Maui, HI; Seattle and Bellingham, WA; Portland, OR; and Dallas/Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Austin, Abilene, Amarillo, Corpus Christi, Killeen/Temple, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, Waco and Wichita Falls, Texas.

Of course everywhere that Clearwire launches service is quickly followed by launch announcements by Comcast and Sprint. Comcast's bundling the service with VoIP, TV and residential broadband services as a wholesale partner, while Sprint is of course making the network the cornerstone of their 4G plans.

Meanwhile, the "new Clearwire" continues its expansion overseas as well, this week noting they'll be offering Mobile WiMax service in Spain next year. The company already offers service in Ireland and Denmark.

NY and LA

Where is NY or LA? They scared of their largest markets and its data traffic?

Re: NY and LA

IIRC they use Comcast for backhaul on the Clearwire sites. Comcast isn't in LA or NYC that I know of?

Re: NY and LA

Comcast doesn't have service in Lubbock I know for sure, it's Suddenlink there.

From what's I have read, Clearwire is using their own microwave backhaul almost exclusively in new Mobile Wimax markets and then running them back to central points where it will hit fiber muxes.. either there isn't fiber in many of the WiMAX antenna sites or it's too expensive.

2010. Given the layout and topographical challenges that those two markets present, it's only logical to figure that they will take more time to build out and test. In the meantime they need to have 30 million POPs covered by the end of 2009 to satisfy the FCC so they're continuing to roll out medium sized markets. When the Chicago market is officially announced, it should be a good litmus test for how their service will perform in markets like NY and LA.

No coverage

When I put in my zip and I am in Marple township it says it don't have coverage yet the map looks like it might. Wondering would this service be a replacement for Fios internet (that's all I have) so it is mobile too? It looks like a reasonable service so far from what I read.

Fixed vs Mobile

It doesn't help that they don't talk about fixed service very much. The linked map is for Clear mobile coverage.

Re: Fixed vs Mobile

Isn't Clearwire converting all fixed markets to Mobile WiMAX? At least that was my understanding.

Re: Fixed vs Mobile

Don't think so. They are converting some older systems to the current WiMax version. It was never 'clear' to me what the difference was between their newer fixed and mobile services were, other than a marketing point.

The older fixed Clearwire service is a different and incompatible technology than the mobile WiMax "Clear". Eventually they do plan to convert all the old fixed service subscribers to "Clear".

Philly "launched" Oct. 1

Yes, it was another "soft" launch... services available ahead of the "official" rollout. Our analysis why is here: »bit.ly/zFLhb

What is the pricing for the Chicago services?

Ireland and Denmark

The article claims "The company already offers service in Ireland and Denmark."

This is not correct. Clearwire gave up in Denmark and their Danish partner took over the network in Denmark.
