Clearwire Vegas Network Goes Live July 21Fourth market to launch... 08:46AM Wednesday Jul 08 2009 by Karl Bodetags: business · wireless · ClearwireClearwire's Las Vegas market went unofficially live in late May, and users had been telling us that they could sign up for service in June. Clearwire now says they'll be launching the market officially on July 21, making it the fourth Clearwire market to launch behind Baltimore, Atlanta, and Portland. According to a Clearwire press release, Clearwire will be holding a consumer demonstration of the new service on the twenty first at the Town Square Mall in Vegas from 4 to 8 PM. Seven additional markets are set for launch this year, including Dallas and Fort Worth, Chicago, Philadelphia, Seattle, Honolulu and Charlotte.

| Re: clearwire fails I agree that fixed will be its most used form, but mobile wimax will not be leaving soon. I hear intel wants to put mobile wimax card in laptops like wifi cards. Wimax will not be used as much by the national telcos(verizon att ect.) it may replace city wide wifi(wimax was made to work with longer distances after all). And those same wisps who use it for fixed may use it for mobile as well, kinda a bundle deal. It may not be as fast as verizon but I doubt it would have a 5gb cap too so it would have a good selling point, also if there was no other mobile mobile wireless near by it could have more advantages there. | |

| There's one reason why Clearwire may not be entirely dead and that's that the cable industry does not want to see it fail. They know that in the long term they need a viable wireless option in order to compete with Verizon and AT&T, hence all of the money that cable has poured into the company. (Obviously reselling Sprint à la Qwest was never going to be a good enough deal).
I don't think that it's a coincidence that three of the four existing markets (and three of the upcoming ones) belong to Comcast and the other four upcoming ones all belong to Time Warner.

| I have Clear services here in Las Vegas. It's available now! I already have it up and running! I have the unlimited 6m home internet with 6m pc card service. I live about 1.5 miles from the nearest tower with many obstacles between here and there. I get anywhere from 2500-3800 kbps at home and near the 6 mbps at my job on the laptop. Some areas have weaker signals than others, but believe me, I can't wait until my contract with Embarq expires next month. I will pay $50 for both Clear services. Embarq's DSL costs me $40 and they don't offer the wireless laptop card. ATT offers a wireless laptop card, but no home service in Las Vegas so no way to bundle. ATT laptop card service is $60/mo and is NOT unlimited!
Clear is what I've been waiting for! | |
