Comcast's hometown of Philadelphia latest market to go live
12:05PM Wednesday Jul 22 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: competition · business · bandwidth · cable · Comcast
Comcast today announced that the carrier has launched faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds in their hometown market of Philadelphia. Upgraded DOCSIS 3.0 Comcast markets see the company's $42.95 "Performance" tier doubled to 12Mbps/2Mbps, while their $52.95 "Performance Plus" tier jumps from 8Mbps/2Mbps to 16Mbps/2Mbps. Upgraded markets also see two new tiers that require new DOCSIS 3.0 modems: $62.95 "Ultra" 22Mbps/5Mbps and "Extreme 50" 50Mbps/10Mbps, the price of which recently dropped to $99 a month.

Philadelphia mayor Michael A. Nutter was quick to lavish praise on the politically-potent carrier. "I applaud Comcast and their efforts to be the first to bring the benefits of advanced wideband Internet to all areas of our city," said Nutter in a statement. "We are proud of hometown companies like Comcast that enrich our lives through their innovation and investment."

If you recall, Comcast and Verizon spent a good part of this year fighting over Verizon's FiOSTV expansion into Philadelphia. Comcast tried to stall Verizon's deployment to the city by feigning indignation about cherry picking, while Verizon took aim at Comcast's substantially lower HD channel count in their own hometown.

Meanwhile, with the Philly DOCSIS 3.0 launch, Comcast tells us that the carrier has already covered almost 50% of their footprint with DOCSIS 3.0. "That’s 25 million homes and businesses have these speeds available today," Comcast spokesman Charlie Douglas tells us. "We’re making clear progress on our goal to reach 65% by the end of this year and 100% of the roll out by the end of 2010," he says.

Comcast's plan remains substantially more ambitious than any other major cable carrier. The nation's second-largest carrier, Time Warner Cable, has yet to launch DOCSIS 3.0 in a single market. Third-largest operator Cox Communications is slightly more ambitious, having launched DOCSIS 3.0 in more competitive parts of Louisiana, Arizona and Virginia. Fourth-placed operator Charter Communications has launched service in parts of St. Louis, though they're struggling with bankruptcy and reorganization.

Re: Remaining Year...

Ok I just called Comcast and my area has indeed been upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0. All of Philadelphia in fact

But the bad news is the faster speed packages Ultra and Extreme are not available in all areas yet 19152 included. They said it should be no more then a month or 2.

They also said the Arris Touchstone TM702 is brand new and only a select few have one. As times goes on more will become available.

So when I do indeed upgrade to Ultra 22/5 for example they will upgrade my modem to the newer Arris Touchstone TM702 or they even may just set me up with a second modem that is DOCSIS 3.0 compatible.

If these new speeds are available South Philly I would not think it would be too long before they are available here in 19152 NorthEast Philly aswell.

I'm not sure you spoke to the right person. The CSR don't know anything. You have to speak to the HSI Tech support team....just press Trouble with your services and select HSI. The last time I called b4 I got the upgrade, they told me next 1 or 2 month too. Then I called again and spoke to TECH support then they told me I can have it. At first he told me only available for the Triple Play Premium pkg and later he checked I can just add on to my Blast for $7.00 more a month and I have Triple Play without the Premium Channels, but I got STARZ and HBO Free for a year. So, just for HSI, I will be paying about $50 for Ultra. And the new modem is included.

Been surrounded by it for a few years but it hasn't been available at my house. I'm moving a few blocks away soon and the new residence already has fios, so I can hardly wait to get some 25/15 on the interubes...

I think Denver is in that 15%. when i called to pay my bill i asked about the upgrade there answer was we got blast and that is the upgrade, Hmmm No is it that the CSR's don't have a clue.

The funny thing is that the CSR said we ( Denver ) is a test market for all the new services, Hmm if so why are we still on 6/1

Re: Remaining Year...

test market is for when comcast wants to test a product to see if it works. we know docsis 3 works! it is being launched in markets first where there is most competition such as philly (verizon & rcn)

qwest sure isnt giving u any speeds with crappy dsl so you be get it last.

Know what the best part of the story is that they say that our network is so over loaded and they need to redo the whole thing but we are a test market? Hmmm something is not right..

Comcast continues to ignore Houston, TX. The 4th largest city in the US, leaving us with the max 8Mbit/sec option.

Re: Meanwhile, in the 4th largest market...

Man I hear ya! Comcast needs to give Houston some love anyway since we are still partially on the beleaguered and under supported network that was abandoned by Time Warner.

I truly believe that the cost to get Houston to DOCSIS 3.0 are higher than other cities because of the mess TW left behind.

In my opinion though, that to me is more of a reason to at least level the playing field for Houston, but I doubt the Comcast shareholders see it that way.

What Zip code are you in?

And would I be able to upgrade from a ARRIS Arris Touchstone 402P to the Arris Touchstone TM702 if I take my old one back to comcast center?

Most of MI is pretty competitive too. Comcast, WOW, Satellite, and UVerse. You think it would be priority.

Small part of Michigan? The Detroit/ Metro Detroit area for Comcast is one of the biggest markets Comcast services. We have had Blast for a while, we are now going through digital migration.... They need to speed it up....

D3

I am just outside the city line in Bensalem, where we got DOCSIS 3.0 earlier this year. I also have the free internet speed upgrade from the promotion/bribe that Comcast gave out when it looked like they were going to loose NFL Network.

So for the standard 42.95 I am on the perf plus tier, and I now get 16/2 service, when I was only getting 6/1 just late last year. Not too shabby.

cox...

Third-largest operator Cox Communications is slightly more ambitious, having launched DOCSIS 3.0 in more competitive parts of Louisiana, Arizona and Virginia.
it should be noted that only where there is *direct* ftth competition does cox have a decent d3 tier. in both locales, there is a 50/5 or 50/10 tier (can't remember the upload exactly). in the arizona market, only a 28/3 tier is offered. maybe when the qwest vdsl takes off in this area, a 50-meg tier will be offered. until then, i see cox having no ambition to deploy anything faster.

28/3 or 25/2? 28/3 might be with PB.

50/5 (not 50/10, that's Comcast) is only available where FTTH competition is.

DOCSIS markets?

"Upgraded DOCSIS 3.0 Comcast markets see the company's $42.95 "Performance" tier doubled to 12Mbps/2Mbps, while their $52.95 "Performance Plus" tier jumps from 8Mbps/2Mbps to 16Mbps/2Mbps."

I'm sorry but I've had those speeds here for a long time now and I don't think out area has upgraded to DOCSIS yet. I've been seeing the 16/2 speeds for probably close to a year now. Unless I'm misreading the article.

16/2, Blast!, was rolled out to some markets before the DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade.

However, markets that do see the DOCSIS 3.0 upgrade, will get jump from 6/1 to 12/2, and from 8/2 to 16/2, or if you already have 16/2, then you won't see an increase.

Price cut

Too bad I can't keep the same speeds and just pay $10-15 less per month when they upgrade everyone to the new speeds. I love high speed internet, but I only download about 30 GB/month and most of the limit is on the server end.

I'm all for progress, but I'm too cheap to fund it.
