Comcast: 80% DOCSIS 3.0 Coverage By Year's End
Company speeds up network upgrade predictions...

As we've noted countless times, Comcast had promised to have 65% of their network upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 technology by the end of this year, and 100% of their network upgraded by the end of 2010. In addition to doubling the speeds on existing tiers, the upgrades deliver new $62.95 22Mbps/5Mbps and $99 "Extreme 50" 50Mbps/10Mbps tiers, both of which require a new DOCSIS 3.0 modem. Comcast now tells us that the deployment is going so well, they should be able to accomplish considerably more installs than originally predicted.

Click for full size
"We have raised our goal to roll out DOCSIS 3.0 to nearly 80% of our national footprint before the end of this year," Comcast spokesman Charlie Douglas tells us. "That would mean passing about 40 million homes and businesses with the new wideband offerings Extreme 50 and Ultra 22, in addition to doubling speeds for existing Premier customers for no additional cost," he notes.

Comcast already provides the service to the Twin Cities, the Boston Metropolitan region and parts of Southern New Hampshire, parts of Hartford, the City of Philadelphia as well as the greater metropolitan area, Harrisburg, Pittsburgh, parts of New Jersey, Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Ft. Wayne, Chattanooga, Portland, Eugene, Seattle and Spokane. The next market should be announced within weeks, Comcast tells us.

"I think part of raising the estimate is just we are getting it implemented and we are a little further along the line and continue to be big believers in it," Comcast COO Stephen Burke said this morning on a conference call with analysts. "I think everybody in the industry eventually is going to put DOCSIS 3.0 pretty much everywhere and it is just a question of how fast you go."

Docsis 3.0

If they would only work as fast on getting everyone up to 100 HD channels

Re: Docsis 3.0

Three HD channels take up the same spectrum as one DOCSIS channel, so basically you're looking at 10 channels vs. DOCSIS 3.0. Personally I'd go with DOCSIS 3 for now, though I'm guessing Comcast has 860MHz plant everywhere so there's enough space for everything and the kirchen sink...as long as you don't compare to FiOS.

Double Speed for everyone else?

When does everyone else get double the speed
These guys get it:
6/1=>12/2 (should have done 10/1.5) -$42.95 => $30
8/2=>16/2 (should do 15/2.5) -$52.95? => $40

What about:
16/2 (should have done 15/2.5)?=>35/5 -$52.95 => $40
22/5? (should have done 25/5)=>50/10 -$62.95 => $50
50/10?=> 100/25 ($99.95) => $75

The 50/10 tier is overpriced anyway... it should be $72.95 to follow the rest of their (already overpriced). I Think they would get more HSI subscribers if they dropped the price by $12.95 on each tier, and price them as above

IMO, you'll never see a decrease in the standard price of Internet. What you will see, as we are already seeing, is in the "free" increase in speed.

HAHA, I whish, but with att uverse being

1.5/1(.385dsl) $25
3/1(.512dsl) $30
6/1(.756dsl) $35
12/1.5 $55
18/1.5 $65

Although AT&T has all the right to charge more because they don't cap, which is good for me.

If anything dsl/vdsl has gone up in price over the last 3 years.... the 3/1 used to be $25 in my area for as long as I could remember.

Comcrap has zero encouragement to drop prices.

Naples plz.

I believe I hit the limits of my 6 Mbps connection the other day trying to pull down a Netflix HD stream. Would like it to transform magically into 12 Mbps.

VZ speeds for the rest of the country without FiOS? 7.0Mbps. you can't compare apples to oranges.

Re: speed

Of course you can, when in your market apples are competing against oranges. Comcast doesn't have special FiOS-area tiers like Cox does, so it's perfectly acceptable to pit FiOS against Comcast pricing-wise as long as both are in your region.

Re: speed

you can't compare when you factor in a hand full of cities verse Comcast upgrading ALL of their footprint. There are HUGE amounts of customers that still belong to VZ that will NEVER EVER see FiOS and will be stuck on DSL forever or until VZ upgrades them in the next 15-20years well after cable would have already upgraded their entire footprints to FTTH to more than out due and pass VZ and ATT.

Re: speed

My logic still stands. In areas where Comcast is competing with FiOS their product and pricing are inferior.

Also, Qwest's new VDSL2 packages are comparable to Comcast price-wise, and upload speeds are 5+ Mbps across the board. Again, Qwest isn't deploying these everywhere but Comcast isn't dreaming up special tiers to compete with Qwest in areas that are served.

That's only for places where there's muni fiber...

Without higher caps, what good is it?

I completely fail to see the value in going to a higher speed tier when they all have the same cap. I actually downgraded - saving $10 a month since the upload speeds are the same - as are the caps.

Get rid or tier the caps - or it is smoke and mirrors. I still think it is very interesting how the Xbox 360 streaming HD package from Netflix came out within a month of when Comcast started to officially enforce the caps. Can anyone say "Anti-Trust"?

Re: Without higher caps, what good is it?

I don't think Comcast *enforces* caps per se, except in situations where you're on a crowded node. They also have the highest "soft cap" in the industry at this point.

Now I'm not saying I like 250GB as a cap; I'm pretty sure it puts online backup out of reach for me. However if you really, really want an uncapped connection Comcast's biz class options are reasonably priced, something that can't be said of most other cable companies' business cable internet pricing schemes.

My Guesses

Denver will be the next big market to go D3. Houston will probably be somewhere in the mix this year as well. And maybe the Florida markets.

It's rare to see a company actually pushing UP their estimates of network coverage by a given date. i'm looking forward to testing out 22/5 at least for a little while, though 50/10 is overkill price-wise and I'd already be getting that with PowerBoost more than likely.

Though after a few months I'll probably settle into the 12/2 tier while I wait for Qwest to bring VDSL2 to my area. Which should take awhile :/

Betting that Las Cruces, NM is sold by 2010 so they don't have to do any upgrades yet still claim they met their deadline. The smaller markets with no competition get screwed.

Re: Some areas in Florida have 3.0

Qwest has started deploying ADSL2+ and VDSL2 in Las Cruces so it might be more competitive than you think. They just started deploying around the university area and around mesilla valley mall. From what I have seen if you live near Roadrunner Pkwy it's 40M paradise. Lots more activity to come in the following months.

Encouraging news for Comcast users

At least there's a roadmap for higher speeds!

Lower pricing will come with competition. I doubt they could sell 50/10 in my area for $100 when Paxio sells 100/100 for $95.

now Bell and Canada with the ISP bullshit being similar to what Comcast was trying to pull, except that they are loving this game just trying t get away with it. I guess only hope is that our "FCC " ( CRTC ) " will do the right thing aswell, and tell these ISPS ...

Hey, Karl, can you be more UNFACTUAL?

Exactly how do you think people will be able to get DOCSIS 3.0 without professional installs and new modems since the wiring has to support it and so does the modem?

Also, since AT&T DSL 6.0 and Uverse requires new modems, why not rant about that?

Perhaps it would Bode well for you to do some research before bashing something making you look like a idiot?

Any idea if the $24.95 economy tier speed of 1M/384K will see an increase in speed?

Uhhh Right....

They will not be able to provide DOCSIS 3.0 to 100% of their footprint unless 100% of their footprint has broadband.

There are still many areas served by Comcast that only have analog systems, and Comcast refuses to upgrade them to digital.
