Comcast Adds Voice Controls to New X1 Set Top
iPhone App Updated, Android App Coming Soon
by Karl Bode 08:20AM Friday Jun 21 2013
Comcast's new X1 Set Top is slowly making its way to additional markets, and now has been updated to include voice communications. The Pace-made device is a QAM/IP hybrid set top that brings a lot of IP-based functionality to users already seen in set tops deployed by telcoTV competitors (widgets ahoy). This thread in our forums offers some user impressions of the new set top, and while many users like it, there appear to be many bugs that still need ironing out. Comcast meanwhile recently announced that they've now added voice-control functionality to the set top. The voice activation currently only works via iPhone app, though Comcast says an Android app is in the pipeline.

X1 still avail only to triple play customers

Unfortunately, except in rare exceptions, most customers are told the x1 STB is only available to triple play customers. Comcast, as usual, has new technology. But their rollout of it is as slow as molasses.

If you had to flush out bugs, hardware issues, customer care calls, etc before committing to multi-millions boxes each costing $XXX, wouldn't you be a little careful?

I have no issue with them doing that... they did the same thing with the DVR when it first rolled out too.. they wanted those who had certain premium packages to get the boxes vs those who had basic or limited basic only cable. Look at it this way because it's based on the eyes of the customer,... those customers who spend the most money who would want this box are going to want it.. they feel they're better positioned and deserving of the new stuff. When or if they find out that a $$20 a month customer is getting the box they want while in short supply, the customer will get upset and be more likely to move to another provider who already has a better offer and availability while feeling that Comcast would not be respecting them for their loyalty.

In other words, it makes sense to make these offerings available FIRST to those customers who spend or patronize the most.. not the least.. most customers feel this way.

As time goes on and the X1 has been more saturated and supplies are available, they pull back on these initial requirements.

And, their roll out isn't any slower than anyone else.. that's a crock. DirecTV and Dish have had similar issues with their newer boxes... in fact all providers do. When there is a demand for something new and exciting, everyone wants it at one time. I suppose they can sit back for several months and just crank out boxes, letting them sit in warehouses making no money, all while they stock up on equipment so they can do a mass rollout so as not to appear they're taking their time. Not to mention, Comcast has no control over the manufacture and their production ability... I'm sure Pace is cranking them out as fast as they can.

Not to mention, if they had one for every single customer out the chute, you think they have the man power to do nothing but install these boxes all day long? ... have customer support centers available just to answer the flood of phone calls from people who are adjusting to the new boxes with questions? ... etc etc? It takes time to roll out anything new to the masses with out creating other issues. The DVR rollouts were a pain in the ass.. trust me.

Who doesn't want voice controls in my house.

Not for privacy, but for Kids...
AKA, I'm not going to TURN THE TV ON then the TV turns on...

Maybe it's just me.

Re: Am I the Only one

I'm wondering if audio from a commercial could say "Change to FOX" (or channel 451) and it would work.
It would certainly be annoying.

Yea.. good question... I wonder why my Samsung Smart TV and my XBox doesn't do that already...

.. oh, because there's a wake up phrase that has to be stated first before it pay attention... but yea, doesn't quite happen that way. (Exceptions of course are, well, anything you say.. some pervert at the NSA is ready to listen in on it...)

Re: Am I the Only one

so the commercial could start with that phrase, better TV's/home theaters are high fidelity enough to mimic a voice across a room to the mic.

Re: Am I the Only one

...ain't gonna happen.

You don't think TV's are head saying "xbox"... and it doesn't activate the voice commands? ... probably disregards what comes out of the TV the same way my phone won't shazam what comes out of it's own speakers...

You realize this technology has been out for years now, right?

WHy do you even bother replying to anything? Since this doesn't pertain to you.. why not STFU?

You make a LOT of blanket statements that mean nothing (troll much?) and assume a lot of things.. and come here to somehow validate your life as, I'm assuming, to the point that you're above all this.. then why are you even opening your mouth?

Push your buttons.. and keep living outside..

For the record.. since you've on this roll all over the place.. um, I'm rather active.. game at times, find the air plane time to be peaceful and fly an airline that STILL doesn't have wifi on any aircraft, and fly them often.. BUT, I don't care if someone else wants to surf the web, listen to music, if they game with a controller, a camera controller, or voice..

So go live your life how you want and stop worrying about how others live theirs..

Re: Am I the Only one

I asked a question, seemed reasonable was it/ could it be possible to hack by voice.
You are a very tense person, perhaps if you put down the phone...

There is a video on the Comcast website demoing how the voice control works. It is not always listening for commands. You have to hit a button on your remote or iPhone to have it start listening for a command.

X1 and Voice control

I just recently upgraded my cable boxes to the X1 platform and so far so good. I was playing around with the voice controls in the X1 app which work as expected, and so far I find it a little gimmicky. That being said, the platform is working well and I am happy so far and look forward to seeing what else they layer into the platform.
