Comcast Astroturfing The Big Ten Network
Bothering fans and non-fans alike
by KathrynV 01:30PM Thursday Aug 23 2007 Tipped by MxxCon See Profile
Not too many people are interested in paying Comcast additional fees to carry The Big Ten channel, so the company apparently decided that astroturfing was a good way to gain some support. Basically, football games have been taken off of the regular channels and are now on The Big Ten channel, which costs additional money. Comcast’s PR people have been pretending to be fans of the new channel on various message boards. Even those users who are interested in The Big Ten Network say they'll get it with or without Comcast, so doing this is just bad practice all around.

Talks are off

I would have to guess that this is part of the reason why Fox Cable Networks (49% owner of the Big Ten Network) announced this morning that they don't expect to make a deal with Comcast and are urging subscribers of that cable company who are sports fans to switch to another provider (namely DirecTV and UVerse).

»chicagosports.chicagotribune.com···eadlines

While this is happening, rumors out of Iowa are suggesting the Mediacom may be close to folding to BTN's demands and may have a deal in place in days. That might start the domino effect to get the other cable providers of size (sans Comcast) to cut deals as well. Comcast will take even more PR hits if that happens.

It's a play on an old slogan.

Guess many here are too young to remember "I WANT MY MTV!"

Big who? Big who cares....

Great, so my cable bill is going to go up AGAIN because some rabid sports fans don't want to pay for the things they want.

You know Comcast is going to raise their rates to pay for this drivel if they eventually agree to take it. I don't watch college football now, so why should I pay extra because someone else wants to?

I would rather see more informational and educational programming. This "Big 10" crap should be PPV. Make it a package like MLB extra innings or NFL Sunday ticket, and let the folks that actually want it pay for it.

Funny that you mention educational programing, because the BTN is planning lots (600+ hours) of it.

Your last suggestion is the same as my suggestion but you are wrong about the sports fans not wanting to pay.

The problem is the BTN wants to be a basic cable station and not part of the sports package and so they are refusing to consider anything else but basic cable. That is the problem.

Re: Big who? Big who cares....

It works for ESPN, why not BTN I guess.

not me

@comcast.net
Surely you mean expanded basic, because they have no shot at being on basic cable in any cable system since there's very limited space available in basic cable.

You're right. Expanded basic cable.

Greedy College's!

Can I get it with time warner and will it be offered outside of the regional big ten area?

I still think this is a money grab but if it actually lets me see games I wouldn't normally get down here than it could be useful.

Re: Greedy College's!

Out of the 8 state big 10 area, it will probably be offered in a sports tier.

However, as of now, Time Warner does not have an agreement to offer it anywhere.

Re: Greedy College's!

BTN wants over a dollar per sub in all Big Ten states. Outside the big tent they want 10 cents. They want to play on fans who live in big ten states.

Charter also has refused to carry the big ten network. I called Charter and applauded them. Charter is right that this channel should be in a sports tier where only those that want it have to pay.

Re: Greedy College's!

Why should it matter if it is on basic cable or not? You still are paying the same high price regardless. The point is that it should be on basic cable for the sports fans that can't afford digital cable, for whatever reason. I don't like MTV, but does that mean that it should'nt be on basic cable. No one watches every channel on cable. If it does end up on basic cable, you don't have to watch it. Cable prices are going to go up, no matter what happens.

Big Ten, Big Whoop

2nd rate matchups (Michigan vs. Appalachian State), sports no one cares about, endless coach's shows ... Makes NFL Network programming look absolutely first rate! Yeah the games will be in HD but there are a lot better matchups on ABC / ESPN / ESPN2, NBC, and CBS. It's a premium channel for Big Ten slappies....let them pay for it.

Re: Big Ten, Big Whoop

What BTN doesn't tell you is that many football games (football and basketball being the only sports that anyone outside of parents would want to watch) will be on existing networks... it's not like you have to get BTN or you'll miss all Big-10 games.

For example, this area is Penn State country. But 8 of the 12 PSU games are already scheduled to be on either network TV or one of the ESPNs. By not getting BTN, viewers will miss games against such powerhouses as Florida Int'l, Buffalo, and Temple.

Exactly, BTN wants to charge premium prices for second-rate programming (aside from being in HD).

2nd rate...hmmm seems it was THE GAME of the day to watch....

Go Mountaineers! ! ! ! App State is the 2x DEFENDING 1-AA/Championship Division Champion....

Any one who whoops Michigan, sleasami u, floriduh u, and floriduh girls school (Thats right FSU was a ALL girls school orginally) I am all for! Close all three schools and I would jump for joy.

Unfortunately Marshall didn't seem to show up against sleasmami

Any way don't disregard those 1-AA teams, and thats what Michigan did.

Re: Big Ten, Big Whoop

Yes, that was a shocker BUT that is also the kind of game that Michigan loses...they didn't show up to play. And it also the exception of the day. The best game I thought was the 8pm game on ABC...Tennessee vs. California, watched that one to the end.

Buddy that has DirecTV said the production for the App St. / Michigan game looked like amateur hour. Graphics and audio problems...the HD picture looked good though that I saw on ESPN updates.

I didn't miss BTN this Saturday...

I hate this crap.

Same goes for SportsTime Ohio and the NFL Network. It's all a scam.

Tell me, what good is the NFL network to me if it doesn't even carry the Fing Super Bowl? What good is STO if they blackout games? Hey, if I'm not going to drive to the statium for overpriced tix, blacking out the channel isn't going to change my mind.

All this crap about yanking sports form OTA channels is really pissing me off, and I don't even like sports all that much.

Minor correction

The comcast people were not "pretending to be fans of the new channel".
They were pretending to be big ten fans who hate the new channel. Comcast does not want to carry BTN, hence why they are worried about people leaving Comcast to get it.

No Comcast wants to put in the Sports & Entertainment Tier along with NFL Network, Fox College Sports, ESPN Classic, NBA TV, GOL, Fox Soccer Channel, The Tennis Channel, and as of this week in Detroit CSTV. This is exactly where this programming belongs. The problem with this for BTN there are relatively few (compared to Basic Analog) subscribers on that Tier. Personally, when I think we do get it, it will be on Digital Classic or Expanded Analog.

Let BTN fold

If the cable companies hold out for football and basketball season and can stand the heat from their customers and the few defections to DirecTV, the BTN will be defunct in less than 9 months.

See my quote above...I think we will see a compromise before we get to far along in the season. The only thing BTN has going for it is they are producing the live games in HD.

A few years ago, the Minnesota Twins tried to follow in the Yankees steps by creating their own station called Victory Sports 1. Due to the high fees they wanted to charge the cable companies, it folded within 2 months and the Twins were back on FSN. The only cable providers who signed up were the Ma and Pa cable companies serving the small towns outside the Twin Cities. Neither Comcast (then AT&T) nor Time Warner offered to carry it. This is one of the many reasons why ala carte cable would be a good idea. Let those who really want it pay for it.

This again?

The Consumerist and BBR, their dutiful watchpuppies, have tried yet again to turn a non-story into Big News... and yet again failed miserably.

No matter how one attempts to spin the story (and the spin on this story makes me way too dizzy to even try to understand it), nothing can change the fact that the only money-grubbing going on here is from the BTN.

Comcast and every other reputable cable company is saying, "If you want to watch Penn State play Florida International, you're going to have to pay for it. Why? Because the BTN wants your money. We're not going to make every subscriber pony up for the wants of a very few."

Isn't that what a lot of people on these boards have been asking for? Remember, not paying for channels you don't care about also means paying for the ones you do care about.

this is the same company with a honcho (shitlock, er, I mean Shatlock) shilling PR about how he's going to tame the rapid, stinking beast that is Comcast tech support, but with no specifics. Hard to astroturf your way out of sorry ass TS, eh? So typical; check Comcast's political contributions -- I have a wager.

If a Comcast rep is talking -- of any pay grade -- you can bet they're lying.

It all about recruiting

It's all about recruiting. Recruiting top prospects means more money. Anything they can do to package the Big Ten as a premier conference and play that outside of their traditional market means they are trying to get some marketing leverage with recruits.
