Comcast Considering Buying BSkyB
The Big May Get Even Bigger
by Karl Bode Tuesday 12-Jun-2012 tags: business · world · consumers · Comcast
Freshly massive after spending $13.8 billion to acquire NBC Universal last year, Comcast is now setting their sights across the pond, where they're rumored to be shopping for British Sky Broadcasting Group, Britain’s largest satellite broadcaster. Anonymous sources tell the New York Times the deal is only in its very preliminary stages of internal discussion, and that the company hasn't even approached BSkyB with an offer. Comcast vice chairman and chief financial officer tells the paper the rumor is "complete rubbish,” and "total speculation and inaccurate.” The fate of BSkyB has come under scrutiny over sees during News Corporation's problems relating to phone hacking, the Times stating British regulators are investigating "whether Rupert Murdoch's media company is "fit and proper" to hold a broadcast license."

More fitting for DirecTV or Dish

Doesn't sound like a fit for Comcast at all. And the timing is off because BSkyB will be in the bargain bin soon anyway when the UK regulators stick it to News Corp. It does fit well with the business experience of DirecTV or Dish to take over another sat TV operation - especially one that may soon sell at a huge discount.

Re: More fitting for DirecTV or Dish

Comcast should have never wasted $Billions on the NBC turkey. If Comcast wants to waste $Billions they should at least do it on something that could be useful to Comcast subscribers such as fiber to the home. What Comcast subscribers do not need is higher prices to support wasteful Comcast over-spending.

and you don't think Comcast wouldn't raise rates on FTTH? ATT has. ATT still does. VZ as well. What happened to those promises of lower TV and Internet rates? I don't see TV going down in terms of price. Bring back something new besides bashing the cablecos.

Of course they would but my point was at least the money would go toward improving Comcast's infrastructure. Comcast subscribers will get nothing but higher prices for Comcast purchases of things like NBC and BSkyB.

It may be a ploy to drive up the price of BskyB incase Dish or Directv want a piece. For Directv, if they were to come away with BskyB, it would be ironic considering News Corp owned a significant chunk of them ~5 years ago.
