Comcast Continues To Expand Usage Meter Availability
Deployment speeds up, hits Georgia, New Mexico, many more markets
by Karl Bode Wednesday 17-Mar-2010 tags: business · bandwidth · cable · Comcast
Back in October of 2008, Comcast implemented a 250 GB usage limit for all broadband subscribers. In December of 2009 Comcast finally released their usage meter, which allows users to track their consumption via the Comcast portal. The meter originally showed up in Portland, then showed up in Seattle and Spokane last January, and the Boston area in February. According to users in our Comcast forum, the meter has recently expanded more quickly into several additional markets, including portions of New Mexico, Colorado, Connecticut, and Georgia. Comcast still isn't offering an official release schedule, though users should receive an e-mail before the meter officially goes live in their market.

The system measures all data flowing between the cable modem and Comcast's centrally managed CMTS device.

It's at the Modem, i. e., the meter measures usage (up & down) for your Comcast account. I presume for most of us that if the dynamic IP address changes, which happens rarely, that it's pegged to one's account not IP address. For a Windows computer, if you're interested in individual computer network usage, install something like Netmeter. However, Netmeter's reports show total network usage for a computer, so if you fileshare in your home network or have networked printers, that usage is included in the reports. I'm not sure what's available for non-Windows machines, gaming consoles or streaming audio/video players such as Roku.

For anyone who REALLY needs to filter out local LAN traffic, such as in home file sharing, they can try Networx. I prefer Netmeter as internal LAN traffic isn't that significant for me and I also prefer the interface of Netmeter.

Or you can use the Netlimiter 2 Monitor which is freeware and can break out lan vs wan traffic:

Re: meter in ABQ

We have it in Lake County, Florida. I learned that if you are logging in through a secondary account and it is not unrestricted you will not have access to the meter. Only unrestricted users that have access to read and pay bills can access the meter. You can log in through the primary account and make the account that wants to access the meter unrestricted.

Bourns!

Seriously this is such a waste of money.
It would have been cheaper just to have unlimited internet.

Once they get this up and running for every customer they will have a great system to charge people by the GB.
Only a stupid customer would think they are creating this system for them.
In a board room somewhere they created a plan with an ROI for this tracking system based off making money later by charging by the GB.

They don't get a vote on how Comcast spends Comcast's money, since they gave it to Comcast in exchange for internet access.

If we give them money for internet access and they aren't using it to give us internet access, are we really giving them money for internet access?

You didn't get internet access from your ISP? You should probably stop sending them money then.

It seems to read a bit low ...

It seems to read a bit low ... at least for now. Which is a good thing. My router says that last month I used 65GB but their meter shows only 55GB. Not so bad, that is one thing I don't need them to fix.

Active in Manchester NH

Manchester NH area got it about a week ago. Shows in residential accounts, but not in business accounts. At least from the handful of accounts I looked at that seems to be the case...

Anyone know if the 250 cap applies to business accounts?

Do not underestimate the usefulness of the meter.

I was thinking of subscribing to wireless broadband through Millenicom. Before the meter I suffered from FUD (Fear Uncertainty and Doubt.) I did not know how many Gigabytes of data I was actually using. According to the meter I used 2Gb in December and January and 3Gb in February. That means a Milleincom account with a 10 Gigabyte CAP would meet my needs. I thank Comcast for the new feature.

It's active

in Washington, D.C....

....and I went over for February with NO torrents!

There are several devices connected to the network, and I do listen to iheartradio.com every night for several hours. This is NO different than watching tv during the same time period.

I will be canceling if I am ever charged an overage!

Re: It's active

Streaming radio shouldn't be enough to push you over. Streaming 250kbs 4 hours a day every day for a 30 day month is only 12 gig.

No call yet

350GB according to Comcast in Jan, 197 in Feb and 155 so far in March... I have two TV's with PC's connected to Boxee, and my wife streams her shows + Pandora all the time. Not to mention I have a WHS and I stream music at work due to filters.

Oh well... If I get a call, I get a call.

Comcast meter

If Comcast is providing the meter, who is responsible for oversight? If we are going to be billed, or worse, DISCONNECTED, for overages, shouldn't the government require a neutral 3rd party to verify that their bandwidth metering is fair and accurate? I call BS on this whole idea...

.

Furthermore I just use Comcast for a pipe. I don't use their email services, TV, or phone. I don't get a paper bill, nor an statement of any kind. I pay my bill via my banks website and thats it. I know when my bill is due, and the exact amount each and every month because it never changes.

Unless they come out and tell me and SHOW me via a verified source I can't trust their meter. Furthermore, I won't go out of my way to check my usage because the Comcast police might come yelling.

I don't do anything illegal - I stream commercial available music via Pandora, WHS and movies via Netfilx and TV via Boxee
