And several other portions of central PA

Comcast is on a quest to have 65% of their footprint upgraded with faster DOCSIS 3.0 speeds by the end of this year, and 100% deployment by the end of 2010. Continuing toward that goal, the carrier today announced they have expanded the faster speeds into Harrisburg and other portions of Central Pennsylvania (parts of Dauphin, Cumberland, Lebanon and Centre counties). Upgraded DOCSIS 3.0 Comcast markets see the company's $42.95 "Performance" tier doubled to 12Mbps/2Mbps, while their $52.95 "Performance Plus" tier jumps from 8Mbps/2Mbps to 16Mbps/2Mbps. Upgraded markets also see two new tiers that require new DOCSIS 3.0 modems: $62.95 "Ultra" 22Mbps/5Mbps and $139.95 "Extreme 50" 50Mbps/10Mbps.

Not bad CC

Still not happy about the caps, But I likes speed.

I am also enjoying the essentially free upgrade that we've gotten for the digital switch in my area, especially since I can get all the local HDs and about 30+ or so other channels in ClearQAM.

Please come back!

A few years ago we had comcast, and then they switched with Time Warner, and things have gone downhill ever since......I would love for them to come back....

charity

100% by end of 2010? Even boondocks markets?

Thats a million times better than TW which is going to redline most of their cable franchises against all capital upgrades that don't result in turn-key revenue (PPV), since no competition.

You don't need to be in a FIOS or Uverse or Muni Fiber area to get Comcast D3 service. Comcast is being a charity with this plan. They need to prepare from stockholder heat.

At least you dont have charter

My guess is by the time charter deploys this technology doc 3 will have become 4.
Thats if they make it through bankruptcy. Comcast fast speeds ftw.

Re: charity

I live in Metro Detroit, so I am hoping the digital switch and D3 come here soon. But, at my families cabin up north we have Comcast; up there, digital and internet are not even offered yet. The movie channels (all 3 of them) are still on a trap system, and not done through digital boxes.

D3 upgrades cost $100/customer...you dont think they will make that back over the next 2 years? Cmon, its a wonderful investment, without a major network upgrade (FTTC)

There are muni's and fiber that are going to have upwards of gig speeds within 5 years; its good to see that cable is stepping to compete.

Thats a horrible, unjustified investment, I want that $100 per customer as dividends. It better increase ARPU by 20% or its a charity.

Get over it. Comcast will make a fortune off of the inevitable cap+overages or straight byte-billing. DOCSIS 3 puts them in a place where they'll be ready to take full advantage.

Only they need to compete on the UPLOAD side!

Can't win...ever.

Just like we don' have blast here, We wont see Docsis 3 till the whole world freezes over, too. I am just south of Harrisburg and can't wait till they ramp up the speed.

Where's the love for Lancaster county? More DOCSIS3 in places where FIOS already is. Cumberland freakin' county?!? C'mon Verizon, lay some FIOS on Lancaster county so's I can gets me some DOCSIS3. C'mon Comcast, at least BLAST us until then.

Payback?

Verizon has received a lot of criticism for cherry picking but when you see how much is involved with overbuilding an area with a PON most of that criticism seems unjustified. However some of the Pittsburgh area suburbs Verizon chose to bring FiOS TV to first were apparently served by lousy Comcast headends. While the Harrisburg area now has some FiOS, before Verizon brings FIOS to all of its Central PA areas Comcast will have paid for its DOCSIS 3 upgrades throughout the region.

Meanwhile in other, larger markets...

Houston languishes with 8Mb/sec max. 4th largest city in the nation.
Verizon - come out here! We need some competition!

What about current 16/2 customers?

I'm in Fresno, CA and currently run "Performance Plus" at 16/2 mbps. This is not a BLAST! tier... nor am I referring to power boost. My powerboost hits 3MB/sec (24mbps) while I maintain a steady 2MB/sec (16mbps) after powerboost degrades.

I'm sure we're not the only market like this... what happens to us when DOCSIS3 is rolled out? And yes I'm 100% sure its not already.

sounds like your node. My brother lives in Fresno and doesn't have any issues with Comcast. Service is well above 16megs without powerboost.

Damage Mode in Philly

FIOS is coming to Philadelphia.
Comcast cut our rates in half to retain my business and added TV and telephone and upped us to 16/2 to lock us for two years.
I will drop CC like a bad habit in two years which is what FIOS projects they will be here.
CC can't keep up with the P2P usage in our neighborhood which is the root for their problems. We now see about 8/1 due to network congestion on our node.

competition good 4 all

comcast is doing this just to fight off fios in harrisburg. so thank fios for increased speeds from comcast. otherwise they would not care about this hick town.

DOC 3.0 in State College

I will never understand why State College has had DOCSIS 3.0 speeds since December 08. We're usually the very last to get anything and we've had faster speeds than a lot of areas before we even had more HD channels.

There is no Verizon FiOS in the area and Verizon DSL has terrible speeds outside of the downtown area. I can only imagine that it has something to do with the old Adelphia setup, which was apparently part of the reason why we got more HD channels before some other local areas. But I know nothing about this kinda stuff, so I'm still, essentially, baffled.

wow

hometown on the front page of bbreports. as others have noted, fios is turning up the heat in this area, and the inevitable result is competition which always benefits the consumer. we're currently on a sweetheart deal for about 3-4 more months---would have no issue whatsoever going d tv or fios when it's time. the best price gets our business.
