New 22 Mbps, 50 Mbps tiers arrive in Colorado
02:33PM Tuesday Sep 22 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: prices · competition · business · bandwidth · cable · consumers · Comcast
Local residents tells us that Comcast has launched DOCSIS 3.0 technology in roughly half of the Denver metro market. As with other launches, upgraded markets see Comcast's "Performance" tier bumped to 12 Mbps/2 Mbps, and their "Performance Pro" tier bumped to 16 Mbps /2 Mbps at no extra cost. Upgraded markets also of course see Comcast's new $62.95 22Mbps/5Mbps and $99 "Extreme 50" 50Mbps/10Mbps tiers. Comcast says they'll have 80% of their entire footprint upgraded with the faster speeds by the end of this year, and their entire customer base upgraded by the end of 2010 - roughly 40 million homes and businesses passed. The cable giant recently announced that they're raising the cable modem rental fee from $3 to $5 in order to help pay for upgrades.

Upgraded 12/2 Mbps Performance tier turns in good speed/$

With Powerboost and the upgraded speeds for the base Performance tier, my advertised speeds went from 6/1 Mbps to 12/2 Mbps. And with Powerboost thrown in I consistently get 15/7 Mbps on speed tests and also with reasonably sized uploads and downloads like you would get when downloading MS patch Tuesday fixes and uploading pics to websites.

And I get those speeds with the std $42.95 price. For me and for most users, you don't need to pay for higher tiers to get speeds for viewing videos online(even HD videos) or for most activities.

The only reason I could see to pay for those Extreme tiers is if you do online backups or if you have multiple PCs in the house watching streaming HD videos. And if you do a lot of those activities you will bump against the 250GB cap in short order. Those people should get a Business Acct.

Re: Upgraded 12/2 Mbps Performance tier turns in good speed/$

I get 31/11 Mbps on PowerBoost with my 22/5 service. The 5 Mbps upload speed is a godsend for throwing around TIF and PDF files between my computer and my school newspaper server via VPN.

I actually upgraded to 50/10 for a little while and used the upload boost to back up my system in a few days (over 230GB of stuff). I'm sure I went past 250GB that month however my node isn't anywhere near saturated so apparently Comcast doesn't have a problem with that.

FWIW apparently PowerBoost is capped now on uploads and downloads. I'm curious as to what the cap is on Blast (the tier that frankly doesn't matter at this point). I know Extreme is around 60 Mbps down and 20 Mbps up (contrary to what Comcast says there IS PowerBoost on Extreme), Performance is 15.5/8 and Ultra is 31/11.5 or thereabouts.

Or if you are an IT individual who works from home. The cost CC is charging is peanuts compared to transportation (if the firm subsidizes that), office space and amenities etc.

I was considering it, but I believe here in WA the Extreme teir is $120, or maybe something else (blast?)

Depends on whether you sign up for TV or not. I'm paying $75 - $23 (modem) = $52 + $3 (modem rental) + tax = ~$55 for Ultra without TV.

I do not consider online backups and watching streaming HD videos a "business" activity necessarily... and so why should residential users need to get a "business" account to do this kind of stuff in any appreciable volume?

Oh wait. Comcast needs to sell cable service too... So it figures why there's a cap.... Can't allow for too much streaming HD video from alternative sources like Netflix, iTunes/Apple TV, Vudu. Residential customers might realize that they don't need cable service for "premium channels" and "OnDemand" after all. As for the business customers, I guess that these alternative services aren't as popular at business locations.

The cap is not about addressing congestion either (to quote JL - an authorized Comcast representative on DSLR)

No modem fee icnrease here yet

I have heard absolutely nothing in my area about any modem rental fee increase. Probably because Ambit/Ubee modems are dirt cheap

While Time Warner drags it's feet

For those keeping track, current number of homes passed by DOCSIS 3.0 service by end of this year is:

Comcast: approx. 32,000,000 homes/businesses

Time Warner: approx. 0 homes/businesses

Looking good there, Time Warner. Keep up the good work.

Yeah, but they've had those fiber optics in their system for years... TW could be known as the new AOL pretty soon.. they're even falling behind AT&T even with crappy deployments... although we hear in the next 3 months, NYC is supposed to come online with Docsis 3.0... we all wait with bated breath and the shoe to drop with a $300+ surcharge to activate the 3.0 speed tier.

RR User

@rr.com

Re: While Time Warner drags it's feet

Once TW deploys DOCSIS 3.0 here (NC), sometime around the year 2021, I get to look forward to getting either their standard 50M/384K tier, or the 100M/512K tier. I can't wait.

AT&T technically offers the fastest speed here, soon to be 24M/2M

TW remains locked at 10M/512K

I remember a time once when TW was actually fiercely competitive.

My area is probably the exception to the rule (central TX) but 15/2 > 18/1.5 in my book.

RR User

@rr.com

Re: While Time Warner drags it's feet

Which is why I don't understand how come TW won't bring 15/2 to this area, since we now have U-verse.

There are plenty of places around the country where TW is offering 15 down and 1-2 megabits up and they didn't even need to deploy DOCSIS 3.0 to do it.

I can have all the downstream speed in the world but with a choked upload, it doesn't do me any good.

qwest...

this forces qwest quite heavily. being that this is their hometown for management, etc. comcast is making quite a showing.
qwest has mentioned that they are in the process of deploying 40/20 vdsl2 in the dslams already served with fiber from the fttn/adsl2+ buildout.
will be interesting to see the churn rate of each company in this market.

Surprisingly, there are a lot of folks around here (college students) sticking with the cheaper Qwest 3/5/7 Mbit ADSL service, even though it's quite crappy.

That said, all power users use Comcast, no questions.

OTOH is Qwest introduced 12/5 VDSL2 I'd be all over that.

which is interesting, because when i price qwest in phoenix, its always less of a value for me because i (a) don't want a landline - i have voip and (b) i don't want a contract to fulfill.

when you factor in non-contracted, dry-loop 1.5 meg service, i'm looking at a price of nearly $45/month, for 1.5meg dsl! thats the cost for the preferred tier from cox, provisioned at 10/768k. no comparison.

OTOH is Qwest introduced 12/5 VDSL2 I'd be all over that.
as long as it was priced right without a contract or phone line

Re: qwest...

Here Qwest is quite competitive price-wise. $40 dry-line for 1.5, $46 for 3/5/7.

Okay, that isn't terribly competitive, but it's cheaper than $55 for Comcast.

Qwest also has a $30 for 1.5M and a $35 for 3/5/7 promo going on right now, no phone line needed. Comcast would be $35 for 1M, though they also have a promotion where 12M is $20 with TV, not sure how much without.

@bendcable.com
Dude, you have to be .5 mile from the RADSL device for 40Mbs and 1 mile for 20Mbs (as VDSL attenuates to ADSL2). With that kind of coverage the value of Qwest is moot.

you realize that .5 miles is ~2600 feet and 1 mile is 5280 feet. even if you are looking at standard adsl, synch rates for 1.5meg service are roughly 6k feet. anything more than that, and you're getting spotty coverage.
its *not* a moot point because of the synch rates at the distance. it *is* a moot point because of the limited deployment of the adsl2+/vdsl line cards into the dslams that are fiber fed.

Will customers be forced to upgrade.

I say again, does anyone out there know if customers will be forced to upgrade or will they be allowed to keep their existing modem if they do not need the higher speed? I am sure that some customers might just switch to DSL if Comcast does not allow them to keep their existing modem.

Does anyone out there know what Comcast's new punitive or retention tier is? The last time I asked about their economy tier, they charged $24.95 per month for 768Kbps/256?Kbps.

Embarq currently offers 768Kbps/384Kbps for $14.95 per month. Who knows what CenturyLink will charge when their new rates are published on October 1. It would be a good value if Comcast offered 4Mbps/768Kbps for $24.95 per month but I am not going to hold my breath. That is the rate that Adelphia charged, if one purchased certain CATV entertainment bundles.

Re: Will customers be forced to upgrade.

At some point, Yes! how far along that is who knows. Comcast is just currently working contacting customers of modems who are only DOCSIS 1.0 compliant. Next step will be to phase out DOCSIS 1.1 modems. Modems that are 2.0 are going to be fine for a while. There are way too many 2.0 EMTA's in the field to swap out.

DOCSIS 1.0 and 1.1 modems drag down the system. DOCSIS 2 modems don't. If you buy a modem today it'll be a DOCSIS 2.0 or 3.0 one. Therefore the VAST majority of folks will have to do nothing. Nobody is going to have to upgrade to a DOCSIS 3 modem if they want to keep 12/2 or 16/2 service.

You are absolutely right. But I would recommend those who are purchasing a new modem to purchased a DOCSIS 3.0 modem - might as well!

I have the SB-5120 (in fact, I've had it since 2005) and, despite sucky signal (behind three splitters; I wouind up losing the "homerun hotwire" I had to the modem in an inside-wiring reconfiguration) it still runs like a champ. (This is a personally-owned SB-5120, and one of the oldest in all of Comcast; I bought it at the Concord Mall Best Buy in July 2005, and have been its only owner.) RCA's DCM 2xx/3xx (the "cinder block", due to their color and blockish-shape) can be quite good (depending on the CMTS deployed; unlike Moto's SurfBoards, the RCAs are partial to ARRIS CMTS gear). I loathe Terayon (I've seen some deployed in Charles County, and have always recommended replacement when possible with Motorola or RCA), and have not seen any Ambit/Ubee (the only S-A/Cisco DPC gear I've even seen has been in Washington, DC, an ex-ATTBI system; I've heard positive comments on the DPC-2xxx).

I've not seen the DPC-3xxx or SB-6120 live anywhere in the area (despite D3 being active in nearly half of Comcast's DC area footprint); however, that is likely because (at least in my subdivision) Comcast has been primarily a cable-TV provider (Prince George's and Howard Counties were among the first deployments of DOCSIS, of any sort, in all of Maryland; I personally never had a non-DOCSIS modem, not even in the AtHome days of 2000). The increased interest in broadband came simultaneously with the deployment of FIOS (now headed for its third year for Internet and phone, and second for TV); however, the growth of FIOS Internet was not at Comcast's expense, as Comcast had few CHSI customers (and only one other than me going back to 2001; that customer moved out of the subdivision, so I've pretty much been the subsidivion's only CHSI customer).

Certainly none in Boulder/Louisville yet

I don't understand why both Comcast and Qwest underserve the Boulder/Louisville area given the concentration of tech workers here.

In Louisville we're stuck at Blast! speeds for now (not actually too shabby at 16M down).

Qwest has done some upgrading in my area - good because when I switched to Comcast the most Qwest would qualify me for is 256K because of my loop length and their refusal to invest in remote DSLAMs.
(Though I actually trained at 640K.)

Now they say the best I can get from their "up to 20M down" service is 14M down, so Blast! even without DOCSIS 3 still beats them.

(The pricing however is no contest, as I have Internet only from Comcast and so pay about $20/month more than I would for Qwest DSL, but at least I don't have to deal with Windows Live...)

I'm getting the full 22/5 speeds... but only since I replaced the modem I was renting from Comcast (and old RCA/Thomson) with a Motorola SB5101. I was topping out at 8Mbs/768K, and I wondered why I was not getting the faster speed I was being charged for.

Heard the modem rental fee was going up, so I bought. Bang. 22/5 and at times more.

Wonder how long Comcast would let customers go with old equipment that can't handle the higher 2.0 speeds? Let the customer complain and then replace the old stuff? Get business strategy, huh?
