Comcast Deploying 20,000 X1 Set Tops Per Day
by Karl Bode 09:25AM Wednesday Jul 23 2014
The inventory issues that plagued Comcast's deployment of their newish X1 set top box late last year are a thing of the past, and the company is speeding up deployment of the more sophisticated set top. “Our X1 additions nearly doubled this quarter, and we are looking again at further increasing the eligibility,” Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts said on this weeks earnings call with analysts and the media. Comcast has long offered the set top to triple play customers, and recently started offering it to double play customers.

Costs

I was told yesterday that they would be more than happy to come out and install the X1 for $169, I replied just not worth the price.

Re: Costs

Is it right that I hear that other boxes for other tvs run $20 a month?

Re: Costs

It may vary slightly by market, but in most areas it's 9.95 for each additional X1 box.

I know in this area it is $49.95 for upgrade, if you have a package that includes DVR then monthly rate is same assuming you dont add additional boxes beyond what is existing, if you have dvr OUTSIDE of package then it is $2/month for DVR, the a/o's are 9.95 whether digital/hd/x1, second DVR's are just $20 more for x1 then legacy, never seen an install for $169 unless you are talking about full install of all services.

I signed up for X1, but returned the hardware after the $150 equipment / install fee showed up on my bill a month later. Too bad they didn't bother mentioning the NRC in advance, I could have saved both of us a lot of time and effort.

As far as X1 goes... It is nice, but definitely not worth a $150 NRC in addition to the increase in the MRC... especially when it still has a long way to go to equal my Tivo Premiere.

However I will say that X1 is leaps and bounds better than the Rovi TVGuide / Moto DVR dinosaur... well worth the upgrade if you can get them to wave the $150 NRC up front.

I just got it

The X1 is a nice box. Managed to negotiate a price of $10 a month for it (replacing the stupid HD Technology Fee) and got a free installation, as well as a rate reduction of $20.

Its a shiny piece of kit for sure!

I can see why Comcast wants more of these in the field, it really makes their Cable TV offering feel like its from this century and not 1987. Its a huge leap in ease of use.

Its also probably more power efficient than the older DVR's - not sure but it should be.

That's how I felt going from Time warner cable's Samsung crap boxes to X1. It's a huge leap in a box that doesn't feel like it's getting in the way and seems to work very well unlike a lot of the older systems that make you want to rip your hair out.

TiVo is still better

Although this isn't as good as TiVo, it's still a huge upgrade for people just getting whatever Comcast gives them...
