'I'm tired of their shitty service,' says one

Yesterday I reported how hackers had managed to compromise Comcast's domain information at Network Solutions, destroying millions of Comcast customers' ability to reach the Comcast portal, webmail and official forums. Wired News has a conversation with the hackers behind the attack, who say they used a combination of social engineering (aka tricking dumb people) and a technical hack to get into Comcast's domain management console at Network Solutions. Once in, the hackers had control of 200 Comcast domain names:
Comcast, they said, noticed the administrative transfer and wrested back control, forcing the hackers to repeat the exploit to regain ownership of the domain. Then, they say, they contacted Comcast's original technical contact at his home number to tell him what they'd done. When the Comcast manager scoffed at their claim and hung up on them, 18-year-old EBK decided to take the more drastic measure of redirecting the site's traffic to servers under their control. (Comcast would neither confirm nor deny the warning phone call.)

"If he wasn't such a prick, he could have avoided all of that," says EBK. "I wasn't even really thinking. Plus, I'm just so mad at Comcast. I'm tired of their shitty service."
The rest is pretty well documented in our front page story and 25 page forum thread. I'll note the hackers claim that no personal information transfers were involved, something Comcast agrees with. They also denied some reports that claimed the attack was a retaliation for Comcast's throttling of upstream BitTorrent traffic.
Thursday, the pair were dealing with their newfound fame, laughing over the press coverage with a mix of glee and nervous excitement. Some reports have speculated that the hackers were retaliating for Comcast's recent sabotage of BitTorrent traffic; Defiant and EBK say that's false: they just hate Comcast in general. "I'm sure they hate us too," says Defiant.

So negativly impact all their customers... nice move. Another thing they could have done was just cancel service.

Re: ugh

You must not have ever tried to rationally resolve an issue with Comcast. It's next to impossible. Here in the Houston metro area, we had Time Warner/Road Runner service & they were bought out by Comcrap...errr, Comcast and let me tell you, the service is night & day different. It took them two weeks just to call me back to tell me if I could even get service in my subdivision that's at least 6 years old and I have friends down the street with their service. Then trying to get my own cable modem (which was the exact same model as the ones they hand out at the store front) I couldn't even get it online, for at least 4 weeks now....and I go get one of theirs, and it doesn't work about 90% of the time because the tech that came out initially didn't balance the connection or check for interference.

I have been transferred to every department & it never got resolved....I've went thru a few thousand 'roll over' minutes I had stored up on my cell phone....(i don't have a land line) so yes, it's VERY frustrating having to call back & get some NEW moron & having to spend countless amounts of time RE-explaining the situation because they are not adept enough to escalate you to someone that CAN fix the damn problem or at least have someone contact you that can.

I don't know HOW the hell they stay in business with the crappy customer service they have.

Modem snafu and ARRIS not being able to cope with Blast.
They sorted it out and I fly.
Ask anyone here!

So, because you or someone else has an issue or a bad experience, doesn't mean we all will.

Yea, just because your service sucks doesn't mean we should all have to suffer. I give you my simpathy for your connection and service not being what it should be, but let those of us who enjoy our connection actually enjoy it.

I also have to side with dadkins because my service has also been superb. Every tech and rep I have talked too has gotten the problem fixed in a reasonable amount of time and with minimal effort. I even dare say their service is decent

An irrational response to an irrational situation is still irrational. The mature thing to do would be to cancel service. As it stands, this young man simply committed a federal crime trying to make his point. In the process, he contributed to the very problem that drive him to commit the crime.

How's that for stupid?

Topher

@comcast.net

Stop Suggesting Cancellation, it's rarely an option!

All of you idiots that said "why don't they just cancel" ever consider that Comcast may be their only option (nor that Comcast gives a crap if they lose one of their millions of customers)? Comcast exercises their monopoly muscles by allowing service to become crappy and not want to hire enough competent people to fix it in a timely manner (I atleased want it fixed in a few months not 1 year of phone calls and wasting my life for "routine maintenance" to finally fix it). Sometimes a company needs to get it's ass kicked to do something, especially when they are the only company that provides the affordable service that you need. Customers of the company just get stuck in the cross fire occasionally. I'm not condoning what the kid did, but I am agreeing that the general population of Comcast employee's are incompetent or don't have enough power to get something fixed, as with most big corporations. They need to take a little more responsibility when their systems break down. What the smart ass kid should have done was "try" to get a few neighbors with the same gripe and send it off to the local news station with a story of how hard he tried (if at all) to get Comcast to resolve the problem. I wasn't fortunate to have any neighbors that cared enough.

You only think you get to set the prices, you don't even get to set the price for your mortgage, and I know before you say it, well then don't buy it.. But I have to have some place to live *smacktard*. It is a shell game while you are so busy looking here they raise rates over there. And before you know it you are paying $3plus for a gallon of gas and $100+ for TV and internet. But keep drinking the governments kool-aid. I guess a sucker really IS born every minute.

Re: ugh

Did you even read my post? I explicitly noted that we don't have control over fuel prices and mortgage rates, utilities, etc...

The choices you do have: you can buy a fuel efficient vehicle, you can live in a less expensive house, you can get the lower-tiered internet plan, you can go without a data package on you cell phone, you can cancel your subscription to Netflix. YOU control the amount you pay because YOU determine which package you sign up for. I'm no "*smacktard*", my eloquent friend. I'm a smart consumer.

Guess what: TV and Internet are not necessities. Even if they are, you can get broadcast channels for free, and NetZero is willing to give you a dial-up account for $9.99 , so don't tell me that I'm the one drinking the Kool-Aid.

If there is a sucker on this board, it's you: you're the one that's been convinced that you MUST have a triple-play package, and that you MUST purchase a house instead of renting. Don't blame me for your turning into a corporate whore.

What do you expect?! Do you really think that corporations should be angels?

I can picture the board meeting at Comcast:

"Okay folks--how do we go about saving our customers money this month?"

Sounds crazy, right?

I know it can be hard to grasp, but EVERY company wants to take as much of your money as they can. Period. It's up to you, the consumer, to determine who gets your money, and how much of it they get. If you don't agree with the way they do business, then don't give them your damn money.

Why is that so hard to understand?

Because many people live in a world where they are responsible for none of their own actions and where government; corporations; mommy and daddy; and all their friends and neighbors are there to take care of them and make their life easier.

Actually they appear to have done it without any real thought to the consequences. No real covering of the tracks at all. Fortunately they were only trying to piss off comcast. They could have very easily created a massive security breach in the comcast system [proxy servers, collecting information, trojan installs]. Comcast and basically anyone who uses network solutions dodged a bullet on this one.

They aren't all that bright...they've already let slip that they have Comcast service, which narrows it down quite a bit (I suppose they might be former customers but people who've already left don't get this pissed off at the company).

Plus, they've revealed they called this engineer guy. How hard do you think it will be to track down where that call originated from?

Edit: These guys are dumber than I thought. The Wired News article has a picture of one of them hitting a bong.

I suppose they could be truly devious—maybe they're disgruntled 'torrenters from Sweden who have never had Comcast services, know their way around the PSTN well enough to disguise their tracks and set up fake MySpace profiles all as part of an elaborate ruse. I think it's far more likely that they are dumb kids who happen to know a thing or two about DNS.

They didn't cover their tracks at all. Also this is not "hacking". Using social engineering and a "technical flaw" does not a hacker make. Also notice they never said exploit but rather "flaw" which has me believing that like many secure sites netsol has made the mistake of making it far too easy to reset a password.

All this kid did was con his way into getting the password to their management console, then redirecting the traffic to a single page. His attack had no flair, no skill, and his "message" was your typical script kiddy "HAHA LOOK WHAT I DID" drivel.

If his attack truly had anythng to do with his "shitty service" perhaps he would of actually made a statement...you know actually wrote out a coherent legitimate complaint and redirected the pages to that...perhaps then I would find this interesting.

All in all this kid is going to be seeing quite the large array of legal fees. There is no need for a corporation to send someone to jail when it's easier to stall their case in the system and force them into bankruptcy

If you pay for a pie, and someone steals a slice, then they have committed a crime. It doesn't matter if you ended up throwing the pie away and didn't care about the slice in the first place, a crime was still committed against you.

While you may not use comcast.net or the comcast.net email address, it is still part of the service you are paying for. Someone removed access to those services that you pay for from you.

Whether or not you use them is irrelevant to the case.

"Another thing they could have done was just cancel service."

WHY DON'T YOU PEOPLE GET IT!

In most of the country nobody can just cancel service. ISP's are a monopoly just about everywhere. There is one count 'em ONE broadband provider for whatever area in which they live. So therefore we have to hope, beg and plead for the one choice we have to offer us what we want or need from an ISP.

No kidding. I was checking for voicemails from attorneys and rental opportunities, and there was a delay in me figuring out how to get my voicemails.

Luckily:

1. I figured out how to get in using the text replacement they put up before I ran out of time budgeted for checking my voicemail.
2. No one left any messages, obviating the need to log in.

Yes, Comcast should have better security, but fact of the matter is that now my ISP will be expending resources on making things bitchier rather than improving service, since most corporate security programs these days tend to be based upon bitchifying things more.

In other words, their prank had the potential to cause real serious problems in peoples' lives. It didn't in mine, but it was extremely close to doing so. I wouldn't be surprised if it actually did for others.

Actually in this I agree. These guys could of done this a bit smarter.

IE instead of hosing up everyone's email and so on, how about they simply:

Created a Spoof Comcast website detailing Comcast's service issues.... then done the DNS redirects for things like Comcast corporate site, etc etc

IE More like a protest and less like a denial of service. That way none of the customers would be affected but Comcast would still be embarrassed and it would still get media attention....

I consider this a theft and should be dealt with accordingly. At the very minimum the value of the theft should be based on the resource value Comcast had to expend to determine and fix the hack. That should easily place it in the fed area.

Comcast Technical Contact!

These guys shouldn't get a pass but does anyone else think the Comcast technical contact/manager should have been a little more proactive about this? Rather than blowing them off maybe he should have at least checked some things. I think if I were a Comcast Exec this guy might be handed his walking papers if what the hackers said is true.

I probably would have blown them off too - but not before I recorded their account # for safe keeping.

I'm guessing the telephone call to the Comcast tech manager's home wasn't a very friendly call (and it doesn't mention what time the phone call was made...)

If some punk hacker called me at home, I probably would have told him to F* off too.

Of course these people shouldn't get a pass--they broke the law--a very reasonable law. It's not like they were jaywalking.

Scum vs. Trash

You get to pick which one is which. My pick is Comcast is trash and the hacker is scum. Too bad we can have a poll.

I get where you're coming from jmn1207, but "smart" people can do dumb things too. Like a PhD philosopher putting tinfoil in the microwave. Or someone writing their password down on a Post-It™ note and sticking it to their monitor. Or using their username as their password. And so forth...

(Nice use of the word hornswoggle, btw. )

Maybe a good thing?

Has anyone considered that in one way having some pot-idled haX0rZ with no real plans do this was a service to the community at large?

Imagine if some Russian mafia team had figured this out, and at 8AM on a Tuesday silently replaced comcast.net with a lookalike page, and started logging password requests through email ports?

You better be sure that every major domain holder in the world and registrar is having meetings this morning, figuring out better ways to make sure this doesn't happen in the future.

Moronic Youth and the Internet age of self entitlement

"Thursday, the pair were dealing with their newfound fame, laughing over the press coverage with a mix of glee and nervous excitement"

"If he wasn't such a prick, he could have avoided all of that," says EBK. "I wasn't even really thinking. Plus, I'm just so mad at Comcast. I'm tired of their shitty service."

Defiant and EBK say that's false: they just hate Comcast in general. "I'm sure they hate us too," says Defiant.
---

Another example of how the internet age has influenced moronic youth to the point that they think it's cool to evoke damage on systems.

Just because the stupid kids "hate Comcast in general" doesn't give them an excuse to perform attacks on Comcast, I hope Comcast pursues this to the full extent of the law, it is yet another example how that generation of youth think everything is a right of theirs or self entitlement.

Keep on laughing morons. I hope they make an example out of you and sue your asses into oblivion, let see you laugh while you work at McDonalds for 50 years to pay off your "coolness"

For someone who is such a fan of capitalism, it seems odd that you don't know the difference between a want and a need. It also seems odd that you aren't seeing this as a fine opportunity to set up your own ISP hat won't have all the issues and troubles that Comcast supposedly inflicts on its users.

Capitalism is about responding to wants and needs; if you can't get your wants and needs met with your current choices make some new ones!

Comcast should thank these guys

Think about it. Imagine if these guys had truly bad intentions. They could have made a lot of money. Recover a bunch of users passwords (start with email) and off you go. Email Paypal that you lost your password and they send a confirmation email. Write a look a like portal for all the major banks. The list goes on and on. So showing a MAJOR security flaw in comcast's system at the loss of a few hours connection is really a bargain. These guy are just vandals. It is a PITA, but get over it and move on.

In Other News.......

There has been a SIGNIFICANT, if yet, unsubstantiated, drop in the volume of SPAM for 2 straight days...

(wishful thinking!)

DeeplyShrouded

@comcast.net

Re: In Other News.......

It would be nice if spam dropped completely.
What these skriptkiddies did has nothing to do with hacking.
Hacking in the true sense of the word is making a pc or other
piece of hardware do something it wasn't designed to do.
Best way to stop this nonsense is, "before we change your
domain sir, I'll have to call the number listed in the
technical contact information" or "Please fax your
authorization on company letterhead".
Then call the # on that letterhead to be sure.
No one should just be allowed to change a domain name because
a voice on the phone says so. Also, to combat the spam
problem, have the ability to block *@domain.* would be nice.

What did they hack?

Nothing, technically.

They stole a password and successfully lied to another person in order to gain authorized access to change a DNS record.

All it takes to accomplish that is some charm and half a clue.

Re: hacker scum

The hacker acts like he has the right to mess with other peoples server. "OH, im going to teach them a lesson, big bad company not listening to me". Thats the same mentality a criminal has, they think they are above it because they can get away with it. I admit i have thought about taking down a server I dont like because I can. But then I would be that guy that thinks he so kool because i can do something that is quite simple. They think they are teaching someone a lesson. Basically, they are sooooo full of themselves, thinking that they are righteous in there hacking. I love the part about, if he was not a prick i would not hack. Good way to justify your bullshit.
