Comcast Expands DOCSIS 3.0 In Bay Area
New community launches include Palo Alto and San Mateo
by Karl Bode Tuesday 21-Apr-2009 tags: prices · competition · business · bandwidth · cable · consumers · Comcast
Comcast gave us a nudge this morning to note that the nation's largest cable company is continuing their expansion of faster DOCSIS 3.0 technology into the Bay Area. After announcing initial expansion into the area last month, Comcast now says they're expanding coverage into at least twenty three new communities including San Mateo, Brisbane and Palo Alto. The carrier gave us a complete list of the new markets, for those who are interested:

Atherton, Belmont, Brisbane, Broadmoor, Burlingame, Colma, Daly City, East Palo Alto, Foster City, Hillsborough, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Menlo Park, Millbrae, Pacifica, Palo Alto, Portola Valley, Redwood City, San Carlos, San Mateo, South San Francisco, Stanford and Woodside.

Upgraded DOCSIS 3.0 Comcast markets see the company's $42.95 "Performance" 6Mbps/1Mbps tier become 12Mbps/2Mbps, while their $52.95 "Performance Plus" 8Mbps/2Mbps tier becomes 16Mbps/2Mbps. Upgraded markets also see two new tiers: $62.95 "Ultra" 22Mbps/5Mbps and $139.95 "Extreme 50" 50Mbps/10Mbps.

While many cable carriers have taken a "wait and see" approach to DOCSIS 3.0, Comcast has been very aggressive with the upgrades. According to the carrier, 65% of their customers will be upgraded to the faster speeds by the end of the year, and 100% of their customers will be upgraded to the speedier technology by the end of 2010.

Hear hear! A larger market, it deserves Comcast's attention, especially since the fastest download available is 8Mbit/sec.

For some reason we seem to be at the end of the list here, despite being one of the five largest cities in the nation. Probably because there's no real competition here; U-Verse's deployment is limited.

Wonderful

Now on to more important states like Michigan (sorry California, you have nice weather year round).

I also heard that in conjunction with the D3 launches, these areas are seeing more HD stations. Can anyone from these areas confirm this?

speed doesn't matter what matter is cheaper is better...
1mbps for 29.95 or 5mbps for 39.95?
I believe 99 percent of us would go for 1mbps!

We really have it great here! LOL
1 cable company that has the entire state
( a third of Mediacom's customers are here)
and 2 major phone companies who won't do upgrades hardly at all or if they do they take their sweet time and charge everybody way too much (Qwest and Iowa telecom)
Is it any wonder why Iowa and never gets mentioned on the news?

(except for the marriage thing but that's another thread)

...which just confirms you've never lived here. The weather here has been total shi** for the past few years; rain, heavy wind, 99F, overcast, and late last year, *almost* snow.

Our weather is about as diverse as your ISP options are. We have two major ISPs (in NorCal) and that's it.

Re: Good news from Comcast

ya well I doubt it ever gets humid there like it does here

around june july it'll likely get into the 110-120F temps outside and 100% humidity (although its been cooler the past few years so maybe only 105 for a day or two)

Re: Good news from Comcast

That's BS. We don't get temps above 100F very often, never 110-120. And the humidity is worse in MI.

Re: umm

Yeah.. I don't have business class but I have 16/2 from Comcast on a non-BLAST! tier. Our options in Fresno from Comcast are 6/1 or 16/2...

Re: umm

Hey d1gw33d, you might wanna call comcast. I just picked up the "blast" package last night in Fresno for $10/mo. extra. to go from 6/1 to 8/2 with powerboost (so I guess the call it the 16Mbps package).....not a bad little bump for $10.

Lucky bay area. =p

I wish I lived a bit further south.

I know I have said this before but I'll say it again. I can't wait until this hits in Sacramento. Surewest isn't innovative enough to do MDU FTTP installs like Verizon is so Comcast will save us by introducing next gen internet speeds via DOCSIS 3.

if you only download occASIONALLY I DONT SEE IT TO BE OF MUCH USE...
anything faster then 6mbps is for brags rights...
since you can't download any more with 22/5 vs 6/1 i dont see it of any use... pointless. useless

I run several game servers, so the files I upload, the upload alone would make a HUGE difference, the download, while at 22 is nice, I could live with 10 or less, as most people could.

can we calm the spin on the word aggressive?

the only thing comcast's been aggressive about is metered billing.. aside from that, docsis promises speeds of 160mbits downward and 120mbits upward.. so a 50/10 plan doesn't seem too aggressive to me. nothing that comcast is doing in their upgrades spurs on telcos to make any significant alterations in their upgrade plans outside of the northeast, so why should they get any attention whatsoever for doing what should be mandatory in the competitive landscape?

sure, there is good cause to be cautious about upgrades and offering higher speeds.. but there is absolutely NO reason why a docsis 3 upload speed should be well within ultra-low node saturated docsis 2 spec... which means uploads should be 30mbits and higher for any entry level docsis 3 speeds-- a 50/30 or 50/50 package is what we call entry level in a service that should max out 32 users per deep fiber node @ 160mbits/120mbits bandwidth each customer.

When ?

I'm in one of the mentioned markets - when will this change happen ? How do I know when it's 3.0 - any change on our hand needed ? (my speed tests are ~6-12mb/3mb so far, just got service installed yesterday)

Big Fat Hairy Deal!

Anyone ever downloaded ANYTHING from the internet? What download speeds have you seen from even the most professional name brand services? Ever downloaded updates from Microsoft? I never get anything over 350kbps or so. How about the latest Java update? 256kbps. I could go on but the bottom line is.... download speeds of 10, 20 or even 30MBsps... So what? Who will EVER see that? I call it "fluff ware".
