Bumps personal storage space for users

Comcast has sent out an e-mail to customers stating that the company has increased the personal storage space per screen name to one gigabyte:
Click for full size
Comcast is upgrading the Personal Web Pages product to include up to 40 times more online storage than before! As part of the product upgrade, your online storage will automatically increase from 25 MB up to 1,000 MB per Comcast.net e-mail address - that's a full gigabyte - at no additional cost. And if you have opened secondary Comcast.net e-mail addresses for your account you will get 1 GB of online storage for each of them.
According to Comcast, the storage boost will occur automatically sometime over the next few months. Is additional storage space something that interests you as an ISP provided service? Do you use the storage space provided by your ISP?

Attached pic (courtesy of Gizmodo) shows what a gig of storage looks like now, compared to twenty years ago.

Newsgroup....

The additional storage space doesn't interest me. What would interest me is if Comcast increased the newsgroup cap from 2GB to say 20GB.. yaa baby.

With FF and an extension, I can use Gmail for storage and it's over 2gb and almost 3!!

You are currently using 2 MB (0%) of your 2905 MB

With the std Comcast account, you can have 7 account names. With this change that means you can have up to 7 GB of free storage. That is nice for backing up files, pics, etc. And it is free.

I wouldn't call it free..

Are the ISP's still automatically deleting movies and pictures from their storage to {lazily} combat copy protection?

So is/was Gopher and WAIS. Not saying it will go away completely.. I'm saying it will not be much of a growing service ISPs will put money into.

Actually yes. When you register for their website, you use an email address as a login ID. It doesn't have to be a comcast email account.

Current email is 250 MB

The main account right now for comcast is 250 MB not 25 MB.

Been 250 For the 2.5 years I have had comcast.

Either way doesn't do me much good since I have my own domain. Heck windows live/hotmail is 5 gigs.

I would rather see internet speeds increase and no usage caps.

You seem to be responding to a lot of comments in this thread.

I believe I can safely assume that you work for Comcast.

So here's my question:

When people visit my Comcast personal website, does the bandwidth used by those visitors count against my secret ceiling?

Re: Key words

Personal web hosting is usually a separate number from residential Internet usage.

But when you allow 1,000's of world wide users on the Internet and various for-profit business "share" your PC, Hardrive and, more specifically, the service Comcast sold only to you, that does count towards your usage cap.

How lame. I LOVE how people accuse other people when they dont agree with their ideas. Sorry sir.. despite appearances, this isn't a bash (insert business name here) site. Not all opinions will follow yours.

Wow, LeftOfSanity, just wow. You have made exactly no sense in your response to me.

What exactly did I accuse you other people of? That you have responded to this thread a lot? As of 19:42:00 09/25/2007 you had 8 out of the 45 posts for this topic (17.8%). And out of the 15 posts you have made in the last 14 days, only 2 seem to be not related to Comcast.

Show me in my one comment where I was disagreeing with yours or anyone else's ideas.

I did offer an opinion, but it was not a bash against Comcast, it was making the assumption that you work for Comcast. Digging a little deeper, I do believe now more than ever, that you do indeed work for Comcast. That's ok.

So here's my question (again):

When people visit my Comcast personal website, does the bandwidth used by those visitors count against my secret ceiling?

Now I know you might not be allowed to answer that (that's ok, just say so) or you might not have the answer to the question (that's ok, just say so).

Thanks and have a great evening.

What I had met my very limited needs. My web page is quite sparse. I guess more is better tho

This upgrade isn't a barn burner. Most Comcast users probably don't care (and I suspect this is why they offer it--cheap for them). It makes for good marketing.

I may store some more stuff now that I have a bit more space. My web page will continue being lame tho

Max filesize

Wake me when someone starts doing more than 10 megabytes per file. I think personal webspace is even more restrictive in this area than email is.

Too little, too late... as usual

By this time, most users have gmail or yahoo accounts which provide them with the necessary space, while not being tied to the ISP.

If ISPs had been smart, they woulda upgraded their email storage long ago... But now, it's a waste.

Re: Too little, too late... as usual

Well in that case it's still too late. With blogs and P2P (which Comcast is trying to limit), the need for bigger personal storage space is limited as people don't host files on websites anymore. The need for higher bandwidth is here.

Perhaps

said by Article :

Maybe the interest has been lethargic because the amount of space and monthly traffic caps have been so limited, it didn't make any sense to use it?

Perhaps we are upset because we simply do not know whether we are going to exceed these limits. Try driving around in a town with no posted speed limits, but where you could get pulled over at any time for speeding, and that speed violation can vary from one speed to the next, even on the same stretch of road. People would probably complain about that too, even if they had not yet been pulled over for speeding.

people just want something to gripe about. I think the whole issue is with saturating your upload 24/7. Far less bandwidth there

No Thanks

No Thanks.

After Verizon erased my account when I switch to Comcast, I now keep all my email and web storage on a third party web hosting company server. I want access to my e-mail or data regardless of ISP I chose to use in the future.

I know what some will say, I can get mine for free. Well for ten dollars a month I have three accounts, separate e-mail web page and domain names for each account, I am unmolested by ads, MySQL support and can run my own scripts.

1GB of files uploaded at 356 kb/s, how impressive!

Considering the molasses slow upload speeds you have to deal with, I'm sure that comcast is quite confident that no one is actually going to be able to use such space to its full potential. That is other than a few that are willing to grow old and die waiting for an upload to complete, like the tortoises in their commercial.

CO Quick

@comcast.net

Re: 1GB of files uploaded at 356 kb/s, how impressive!

I get about 6MB down and 1.5MB up (in CO) with my basic comcast account, I think that is not bad for $50 a month.

I use all 7 of my accounts web space (have a photo album of my kids) and am just about out, so far, comcast has not upgraded any of my id's, but I too got the mail about it.

So my answer to the original question, I think it's a great idea to up the space!
