In limited markets....
(old news - 09:15AM Wednesday Jul 23 2008)
tags: business · cable · Comcast
While the Nintendo Wii remains in short supply, new Comcast customers may have an easy way to obtain the game console. An employee tells The Consumerist that from July 28-August 17th in select markets (Miami, San Francisco, Houston, Denver, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Detroit,), the company will be giving away a free Wii to new double-play (TV/broadband) subscribers. Keep in mind some default Comcast routers don't play nice with the game console. Stuck in a duopoly market and not thrilled by either option? Comcast may have just made your decision easier.

Update: a user notes that the fine print doesn't make the offer quite as cut and dry as it seemed:
Please note that beginning, July 28th, Comcast Sales Agents will begin to offer the Nintendo Wii promotion to *NEW* customers who sign up for a qualifying Triple Play plan [Preferred Plus or Premier, depending on market] *AND* pass the credit screening threshold TBD by market; if they do not pass, they will be required to pay the $250 Wii deposit to sign up for the Nintendo Wii offer.

OK that first link made me laugh

DS has competition in hand held gaming from the iPhone LMAO are they serious! Cause kids (talking young kids 8-12) are going to ask for a iPhone to play games on.
Now going on topic..I wonder if they will make you do some contract thing to have the Wii.

Really?

Considering how some other cable companies have not lived up to their promises regarding the giving away of zero-cost items, would someone who signs up for this really expect that they will get a Wii?

I am also wondering... does the Wii offer a movie download service like the PS3 or the Xbox 360 do? If the Wii does not offer such a service, then that might also explain the decision for Comcast to go with the Wii.

I use my PS3 to download HD movie trailers. I also have Comcast broadband. Considering how long it takes to download one of these trailers, I have some misgivings about trying Sony's HD movie download service. I will eventually try it out of course, I am curious to see how well it works.

I think anyone who takes Comcast up on this offer will be lucky if they get an old NES.

Supposedly w/ TVersity you can stream content to the Wii. I haven't done it yet as I am happy w/ the XB360.

and lots easier to give, a few mouse clicks and hit the box and they have their channels.

free stuff generates calls to tech support "wheres my Wii".

This employee shouldn't have spoken so soon...

...because I think that the employee doesn't know the terms and conditions of the promotions yet (which a lot of reps do NOT), and the T&C of this promo is going to be the real kicker and nice fodder for sites like Consumerist and BBR.

And I suppose you know the T&C better than an employee? Plus, I doubt this is some first line employee talking about this.

Or are you an employee yourself?

Re: This employee shouldn't have spoken so soon...

I'd rather not answer the final question (though I think you can get the hint), but I challenge you to call in to your local call center right now and ask what the specifics of the terms and conditions are.

I can't speak for the Florida market, but there is currently one stip in the Philly market that is just flat out a joke unless Comcast plans on giving customers the Wii on the day of install, which I am confident that they will not be doing.

Like I'm inferring, there's going to be more to this than just the "sign a 2 year agreement, blah blah blah" - at least in one market, and once people catch wind of what it is, we'll all just be shaking our heads and laughing. Or to put it another way, if I were a new customer, I think I'd be saving a lot more money by calling into my local Toys R Us every day and hoping they'll have one or two in stock.

Used to be a free DS

When I signed a 2 year contract about a year and a half ago I got a free Nintendo DS. It came promptly as well. The Comcast service has been great in my area and I have to applaud them for that. As for this offer, it is just gravy.

Wiis are STILL in short supply?

Sheesh! In almost two years, you'd think they be close to market saturation.

Econ 101, kids. When demand exceeds supply, you get to charge whatever you want.

Re: Wiis are STILL in short supply?

But the Nintendo Wii is the cheapest of the three current-generation consoles?

Indeed, Econ 101 would state that Nintendo should raise the prices until there isn't a shortage or excess of consoles (i.e. supply = demand) to obtain maximum revenue, wouldn't it?

All I know is that demand for the Wii continues to exceed supply.

I think after 2 years, it ceases to be a "marketing strategy" and becomes "poor distribution."

Re: Wiis are STILL in short supply?

I think it's pretty clear that Nintendo didn't expect such high demand (and with the GameCube's sales being what they were, who could blame them?)... My guess they're in the trap of not wanting to produce more because they fear that once they do, demand will stall and they'll be stuck with tons of unsold inventory... and then it falls into a self-perpetuating excuse.

Actually that's not Econ 101, unless you're suggesting inelastic demand. Since I don't think they would sell one unit if they priced it at $1,000,000. Their current price point is now set below that required to sell current available supply. I imagine it is set to meet an ultimate supply equilibrium, which is also, of course, effected by replacement products.

I don't know. Last time I was at my local Fred Meyers there were plenty of Wii's sitting on the shelf in the display case.

I know these were not empty "display boxes" either because I bought one.

Re: so you can play

BUt you can't play multiplayer because your router borks the connection. Or Comcast itself does. Or something.

I've already got a Wii. How about, instead of giving me the Wii and charging high prices for the services, discount my total cost per month by $10 for the length of the contract?

Comcast giving a Wii as a promotion - not rat poison

You would thing Comcast was forcing free rat poison on new customers instead of giving away a free game console. Some people need to get a grip. It seems anything Comcast does, no matter how benign, is attacked as if the devil was trying to lure people to the nether regions.

@verizon.net

how about options

Like one of the previous posters said, some people already have a wii, or some people may not even care about it. How about giving the consumer the option. For example Verizon gave free tv or gift card. Comcast should do the same, either Wii, gift card, or even a credit on the bill like one customer stated. Also, is there a limit to the number of customers? Or is it everyone who signs up between certain dates? If its the latter, what happens when they are unable to get enough Wiis, seeing as the console is already in short supply?

$250 for the Wii

that's what I gave for it in sparta, Ill in that wal-mart.

If you are having a hard time finding a Wii like I did, get on wal-mart.com and check the outlying stores. The ones just outside of metro St. louis, or other areas. I drove only about an hour to Sparta, IL to pick one up and they had like 14 in stock. The granite city wal-mart had been out for weeks.

That night I found out Chester, IL was sitting on 35 of them. Carbondale, IL had 20, Cape girardeau, MO had like high 20's of them. Perryville, MO had 20 of them.

Moral of the story: check your small town wal-marts for them. most times they are just sitting there.

Re: $250 for the Wii

yea all the metro area wal-marts either told us they didn't have any, were on back order, or never carried them. Finally when I left the metro area wal-marts and expanded to the small towns I found one that had them. Including the back roads it only took us an hour to get there and about an hour to get back. Was a really quick trip!

No duo here, just a monopoly

Actually, I'm stuck in a monopoly market, no DSL out in Redwood Valley (8 miles north of Ukiah in Mendocino County) with Comcast (formerly Adelphia in this county) being the sole HSI provider. We're part of the Bay Area Comcast Network, though we're 115 miles northwest of SF. Their Digital Cable stinks compared to Directv and Dish, no wonder they are giving away free Wii's

Locked and loaded

Hate to burst your Comcast hating bubble, but as a Comcast field tech i have Wiis on my truck ready to be delivered to customers as of the 28th. I actually touched them and loaded them so i know they are there. And they are new. I am in the Denver market so I hope this doesnt hurt anyones feelings. I'm sure you can find something else to complain about with Comcast. I do love the negative comments from the people who dont even live in the Comcast footprint. I guess you have been wronged by Comcast remotely....
