As cable giant is poised to acquire NBC Universal
09:55AM Thursday Nov 05 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: business · cable · Comcast
In discussing yesterday's earnings on a conference call with reporters, Comcast hinted that -- despite being profitable and in hot pursuit an NBC Universal acquisition -- employees should prepare for layoffs. There's no word on where exactly these layoffs will be happening or how many, but early indications are that many of the cuts will be in advertising. According to the Boston Globe, at least 64 positions have already been trimmed at Comcast's Spotlight advertising division, though those cut were informed of the decision back in September.

Update: One user sends in an additional Boston Globe report ranking Comcast as the top place to work. Great news -- assuming you still work there.

bad customer service here we come

Comcast is a company with severely lacking customer service. They are looking to expand their short term profits by laying off more employees. Looks like another short sighted CEO to me!

Re: bad customer service here we come

Don't thinks so. Customer Service has been ramping up for a while. In my market I've seen new hire classes of at least 30 folks for last 3 months straight. Like Karl mentioned Spotlight looks to be getting hit. I wouldn't be surprised if these employees get offered jobs in other areas within Comcast, specifically Business Services which is a growth department.

Spotlight has had a few of those notifed their position was being eliminated that there are new positions within spotlight they should apply for. Some of these positions are revamped or combining and reassigning workload.

Ummm.. yes, they are.. how do you know this and where are you getting your information?

In the MPLS market, there have already been some tech, engineer, and other "front lines" let go.. there was a round of black Thursday layoffs, albeit not a huge one.. there is rumor there is another round coming soon.. but, in that case, yes, there are some administrative positions being trimmed as well... but, it's not just limited to non-front-line people.

Re: bad customer service here we come

^ You are correct sir.

Front line supervisors, video support agents, spotlight and dispatch are among the 'current' eliminations. Techs are on the table and not sure yet if they'll have any positions cut yet.

Next up is business services support agents. They're being moved to residential support, and their positions are being moved to another 'centralized' state with a large number of greenhorns. I don't expect that to go well...

Re: bad customer service here we come

They also haven't been hiring any new techs for a while.. however, they are going to start hiring in December.. but yet, they are laying them off... sounds to me like they are trying to trim the expensive techs off for layer paid techs.

Comcast-Spotlight

Good thing I didn't get the job at spotlight, I might be the first to go. oh well.
Every time there is a buy out of some sort, first the tell you the been saving their pennies to do it then they want to lay people off because of the buy out. Such double talk!

Still no self service cablecard

Comcast still hasnt made alot of services. self serve. Plus they need to actually care about there customers. I bet when the NBC deal goes though The weather channel , will turn into a extreme sports channel, and have the local forecast every 1hr for 1min.

Cablecards are a short-lived technology bump between digital boxes, and tru-2way. They are wortheless, unless one has a Tivo.

Cablecards are needed and a part of tru2way. CableLabs won't have a replacement (DCAS) ready for prime time for at least several years. They're also REQUIRED by FCC regulation for cable boxes.

So they're neither worthless or short-lived.

They don't "care about there [sic] customers"?

Should they buy them flowers, walk them in the park, romance them to a contract?

And as for self-serve, what exactly do you mean by that?

self serve anything is just a call generator anyway. unless the person has technical knowledge they should just have a tech come out. because from my experience too many people need help to plug in the power cord.

What?

And these SOBs think they can buy NBC? They can't even keep their own staff. Come on, US Justice Dept, FCC, block this attempt by a media carrier to merge with a content provider. That's a line that should never be crossed.

It is called reorganization. Or, in other words, cutting dead wood. A company has to prune departments that are overloaded with useless staff due to change in mission. Comcast is not shrinking in size, so your statement is not relevant to the plan to acquire a new subsidiary.

The advanced dispatch department was not useless staff. They were the Techs saviours whenever we had issues getting internet and phone up and going as well as fixing issues with static ips. Now they expect us to deal with an outsourced company with a month of "training". Their last day is the 13th soo get prepared for even more suck.

Nice try. Time to start enforcing the Sherman Antitrust Act for the first time in at least 30 years. Should Americans serve corporations, or should corporations serve the American people? Take away personhood status of corporations, give them a limited lifespan, heavily regulate them. Had that been followed, the economic crisis, and Bush's payout of 800 billion dollars via TARP, would not have happened. Where were the teabaggers when Bush held the gun to America's head a year ago?

TheUWord

@spcsdns.net

If they really want to get rid of the dead wood in the company they should start at the top. Brian Roberts needs to go. This guy couldn't run a hot dog stand unless his daddy started it for him and made him CEO. Oh yea! That's exactly how he got the top job at Comcast.

Technicians in Comcast need a UNION!

That line was crossed years ago with Viacom, so good luck with that one.

"Not many people know this, but I happen to be quite famous."

RedDelicious

@sbcglobal.net

Re: What?

Viacom was formed when CBS was required to divest it's content production and syndication arm. You got that backwards.

When the FCC prohibition on networks owning the programs they broadcast was removed, Viacom essentially bought it's parent, CBS.

Of course, Redstone's National Amusements controlled both so it was all just a paper shuffle anyway.

This Comcast-NBCU deal is not the same thing. In 1970, CBS controlled it's TV network and single TV stations in seven markets. Comcast controls the biggest slice of a cable market which provides transport to over 80% of all channels watched. Comcast could easily start hacking away at competitors by denying carriage, which, while technically illegal, could also easily put them out of business while the lawsuits wanders through the legal system.

This is precisely the kind of media consolidation we should be avoiding. But you'll never get the pro-business-at-all-costs cable fanbase here to admit it. Maybe once the damage is done a movement toward separating the content from the delivery will restart, much for the same reasons Viacom was separated from CBS in 1971.

Washington

@comcast.net

Re: What?

Ok forget Viacom. How about the fact that Comcast already owns E!, G4, Versus, Golf Channel, Style Network, Comcast Sportsnet, Sprout and a few others. Owning content is nothing new and other carriers haven't been blocked from those assets. Comcast doesn't provide service every where and isn't going to lose out on the revenue from their competitors just to block out those networks.

Why? NBC owns only 27%, with FEG owning 27% and ABC owning 27%. And there's some other owners.

Comcast can't shut it down w/o ABC, FEG and the other owners.

They may pull content, institute an exorbitant monthly charge or do both, but allowing users to sit and watch for free, the same content they are selling isn't going to happen.

Re: Oh great

The only real thing Nbc can say they have that the other networks don't is Oprah and the olympics. After that all you are left with is a bunch of Law N Order spinoffs, way too many straight to video sci fi movies with far too many commercials, the pathetic attempts to be funny by the cast of SNL, and show after cancelled show. Truthfully what is their for Comcast to ruin?

not in the public's interest

company is so cash poor that it must lay off employees, yet rich enough to BUY another company?!? somethin's not right there! if anything, I think comcast should be BROKEN UP, by region.. be it east/west, north/south, maybe even content/last mile service provider. they are one of the big 3 that need some oversight at the bare minimum!

It's never in the public interest when a large distributor merges with a large content provider. It may be in the best interests of a few shareholders but it always, always, always screws the consumer!
