Content portal needs some work...

Though they don't mention you don't technically need (see our FAQ) the Comcast installation CD to install Comcast broadband, Slashdot users complain that the cable giant has an apparent disdain for Firefox -- a conclusion they arrive at because the installers won't work with it.

The shiny new Comcast portal also doesn't support Firefox, despite the company's grand plan to be a content juggernaut. The same is true for Macs -- clicking a number of links on the Comcast portal results in an error message telling you the website is optimized for Internet Explorer 5.5.

Don't plan on installing the CD

I'm quite surprised someone actually would want to because its very unnecessary.

Worse yet, it is full of spyware. New users beware, and do not allow the installer to touch your PC!

They used FrontPage 2000 to build their site! Good to know our cable dollars are going towards building the best website out there! *sarcasm*

Wow...

Well I guess I still am glad I have a full install of IE 5 sitting on the server still!

Comcast would probably never come here so this might be just a commodity. Although if anyone needs IE 5 please let me know. I have it archived and could upload to a place to allow you to download.

I even have IE6 archived as well.

No need for that. You can go right back to IE 1.0 in the evolt browser archive: »browsers.evolt.org/

I've really got to try that some time (on a virtual machine of course), just to see how it handles todays websites .

Re: Wow...

Considering IE 4 (Win98 bundled browser) gives a multitude of script errors just trying to load microsoft.com (fortunately they still have a version of windowsupdate.com that works with it), good luck with IE 1.0! Maybe an old Geocities webpage that hasn't been updated since it was made back in 1997, or something like that, might work.

Come on over to Comcrap

We are your one stop shop on the internet and EVERYONE is welcome ............ That is as long as you run Windows and Internet Explorer. Mac and other browsers need not apply.

Nothing like trying to accommodate a wide audience, eh?

Nah, if they were in bed with M$, they'd force use of IE v8.9234763254876, which of course, can only be run on Vista.

Never Noticed

I use firefox without problems on comcasts portal. I even use a linux box without issues. I do not spend a lot of time on the site, but checked emails, looked at a video clip or two, never any issues with firefox 1.5 or 2.x.

Ridiculous

Comcast.net fully supports Firefox. As a matter of fact, a message at the top even asks you if you want to add the Comcast Toolbar to your Firefox browser. Not sure what this "news" is talking about.

Key word in this article is Slashdot.

Here... this is why FF no workie - the error is because of javascript!
Love how that was not stated in the article...

EDIT: HELLO! Comcast Play Games is "Powered by Oberon Media"!

Who wants that shit on their computer anyways?

It's great to see "Oberon Media" has finally optimized IE 5.5 for Comcast Play Games. What a frickin technological leap back wards.

But, hey, Give 'em a few centuries and they may realize the potential of IE 6.0 and optimize that version of IE as well.

Edit for clarity

@comcast.net

I agree completely. I have run nothing but Firefox on my PC for a few years and have encountered no problems. I have never tried those games because who would want that garbage on their machine. It's funny how the media always wants to badmouth Comcast, but the media darling Verizon comes out looking great even when Verizon just got cited in the Pittsburgh area for using illegal immigrants and unregistered vehicles by their contractors. Once verizon starts offering television more widespread other than the wealthy areas of cities than more people will find out how inept much of their service is as well.

Re: Comcast for Sheeple

I never understood who and how these ideas they come up with even make it to the table. More than half what they give out is Junk. It's kinda like the news, no news just put something out there to fill the space. Everyone is always talking about faster speeds, fios ect. Well instead of anything use full or in demand they give out worthless stuff to those that don't even know its there.

I luv Comcast

@comcast.net

Comcast is awesome.

They're the number one ISP in the world as far as I'm concerned. I wish everyone on other isp's could have the awesome experience that so many of us on Comcast have these days.

I use FF on comcast and have had ZERO problems whatsoever.
The ONLY thing that hasn't worked is my banking and brokerage secure sites, and even at that..FF's ie tab plug in resolved that issue nicely.

Meanwhile..THESE are the speeds that I and many others are now enjoying via this AWESOME ISP.

Re: Oh well...

Verizon does the same thing. You have to install the Verizon "optimized" MSN, Aol or Yahoo browser. Make sure you image your system before the comcast or Verizon techs come to install your broadband connections! Verizon offers you the choice of MSN, Aol, and Yahoo browser hijackers. Verizon also cuts your copper telephone cable so you that you are stuck with Verizon.

Re: Oh well...

First off...I was talking about them not supporting Firefox. Any ISP that will not support all of the major browsers is ridiculous.

Secondly...You don't have to choose any of them. My brother got it installed without installing anything and kept his copper. I did my Comcast HSI without installing anything either.

katwomansz

@verizon.net

Verizon FIOS is great.

OK I was no big fan of Comcast who had a monopoly for years here in Maryland. Which means constantly rising prices with an attitude that they are the only ones. So our Block cheered when Verizon gave us freedom of choice.
All I can say side by side is that Verizon FIOS is better and cheaper too.

The Verizon "optimized" Yahoo is a separate added browser program that does NOT hijack your normal versions of Firefox or IE. It also included Free Yahoo Music unlimited Radio. and free Yahoo AntiSpyware and Antivirus that I had to install manually. Maybe if you request them to install it for you they will. Its very easy to control or shut off if you don't want it for free.

They do not cut your copper wire. Because around here they are the phone company and that would be cutting their own throat. The copper lines here are owned by Verizon.

After I was happy with the Fios Internet and TV I later ordered Verizon Voicewing (VOIP) I compared the service side by side for a week before my old phone number ported over. So I am quite sure the copper is still there.
