But doesn't say which because they're still testing....

Comcast over the weekend announced that they've struck a deal to buy Cable Modem Termination System (CMTS) gear from Arris Group, as the cable giant speeds up their DOCSIS 3.0 plans. Last month, Comcast launched their first pre-certification DOCSIS 3.0 market, offering $150, 50Mbps/5Mbps service in the twin cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. In a panel over the weekend at a major cable trade show, Comcast said they currently have DOCSIS 3.0 deployed in two new markets for testing, though they wouldn't specify which. From Cable Digital News:
Although Arris and Comcast did not say where the C4 will be installed, the MSO has apparently rolled out Docsis 3.0 in more than one market. David Fellows, a Comcast executive fellow and former chief technology officer, moderated a panel on the topic of bandwidth Sunday afternoon, and hinted that the operator had rolled out Docsis 3.0 in a total of three locations so far. When asked to elaborate, he said the operator had started to test Wideband services with employees and other friendlies in two new markets, but could not identify them. A Comcast spokeswoman was looking into the matter.
Comcast has promised to deploy 50Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 service to their entire customer base by 2010.

Well, it is good that we now have the obligatory Invisi-cap post out of the way every time a story comes out about faster Comcast service.

Someday, they will figure out that speed and volume are NOT the same thing.

Re: A clap of hands for Comcast please.....

well then, what's Comcast's cap then, TK (no, not the point at which you get booted, I want a definite answer)?
Maybe instead of marketing $150/month connections filled with fine print, Comcast should concentrate on actually giving users a definitive cap, and incorporating that into their TOS.
The 'few minutes' was merely a hyperbole, but if a user can blow through the so-called 250 gig cap on a 50 meg connection in less than half a full day, somethin's very, VERY wrong.
BTW, the chance of this issue disappearing is about as much as that of TPB being shut down...

No, you can blow through your 250GB cap in 11 hours, 27 minutes of constant downloading. Oversubscription at its finest, but not as dire as you'd think...

You do not need to go it all at once. The 250GB at 50Gbs means that you get about 22 minutes a day of full speed downloading (or more download time per day if you go slower) if that 11 1/2 hour figure is accurate. There is also the uploads for ACKing the downloaded packets as well as the real uploads (Email, Web Requests, etc.) that eat into the capped traffic.

1: The 250G cap is just a rumor
2: Odds are any caps, if implemented, would be based on your tier. DOCSIS 3 users would probably have a much higher cap.

Would be Florida..they announced some city there awhile back..but then got hush about it. Not sure what other market it would be..I doubt its Chicago, being that their still offering 8/2 AND blast! (16/2) there.

That or they don't want users rushing to a service tier that's still in testing..

I'm just curious if they set these "new markets" to 50/5 also..being that docsis 3 modems are out now.

Not to mention going cheap on the upload, hell cablevisions OOL BOOST product gives 5mbps on the upload and they're D2!
for $150 i'd expect more than 5 up.

Upload much?

Only 5 Mbps when the download speed is 10 times that? Sure, that would more than suffice the average user..but the average user isn't the one who's going to be signing up for a 50/5 speed tier. This 50/5 tier doesn't seem of any use other than just straight torrenting or massive downloads.

I've got a 15/15 FiOS tier myself and I used to have a 15/2 tier. I must say everytime I torrented, it was always my upload that would be maxed out and slowing down all other clients using the internet because there was little to no upload bandwidth left.

Obviously, this can be solved by restricting the amount of bandwidth alloted for torrenting..but it just never sat well with me. The fact that I had 15 Mbps available to me to download yet only 2 Mbps for uploading just doesn't seem right.

Sure, in general residential users download a lot more than they upload..but if companies like Comcast are going to put out extreme tiers that supplying large amounts of bandwidth to residents, I'd expect it to in both directions.

Of course supplying upload speed may be a problem if a company's network is overdue for an upgrade and they are already squeezing as much bandwidth as they possibly can out of it..but we wouldn't know of any companies that would follow such practices now would we...

1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

Could it be any more lopsided for $150?

You'd think they'd want to try out the bonded upstream channels which SHOULD be on the network for TRUE docsis 3.0 spec for your $150 a month, but no.. it's the DSL of docsis 3.0 for a steep $150.

Edit: Just kidding, I just am trying to make the point that, whatever the shortcomings of DOCSIS are, they are starting to show, given the awful 10:1 dl:up ratio, especially, since the 50 Meg subs are going to be paying $150/month, when FiOS subs in competitive markets get it for about $90, and with 20 Mbit uploads to boot.

DOCSIS3 is supposed to include upstream channel bonding in its final incarnation, but that part of the standard has been delayed.

I think Comcast's current deployments are a non-standard pre-DOCSIS3 version that doesn't feature upstream channel bonding, and so can't provide anything faster- but the standard does include it.

My connection will do 50 Mpbs D / 40 Mbps U on speed test (during non-peak hours of course), but I'm only suppose to be on the "16D/2U" tier. So in fairness to my neighborhood, I have my connection traffic shaped to what they say I'm suppose to have. The only thing is, the modem is only a DOCSIS2 setup (as far as they told me), so unless I have my versions mixed up, I don't think DOCSIS2 is suppose to be able to do 50 Mbps, but I can on speed test sites and my router bandwidth counter matches what I see in the speed during the test. I wonder if my modem is one of those "pre-DOCSIS3" types or not since the speed is well beyond what DOCSIS2 is suppose to be able to achieve?

Looking at the modem channel and frequency page, this shouldn't be able to hit these kind of speeds at these modulations right?

Nope. In my experience, the most you can push through DOCSIS 2.0 running 256 QAM forward and a 64 QAM return is 35 Mbps down and around 28 Mbps up. I believe the spec is 38 Mbps down and 32 Mbps up, though I'm feeling too lazy to look it up.

To the best of my knowledge, no one is bonding upstreams outside of a lab yet. The good news is that this feature is software upgradeable (at least it's supposed to be with the Cisco gear we're using anyway). Once the final 3.0 spec is ratified and debugged, it should be fairly easy to deploy fast symmetric speeds... assuming your cable plant is clean enough to support it.

Dude... Speed tests are never to be trusted. Particularly with the boost techniques being used. Only way to be sure is to find a good fast torrent with lots of seeds, or a nice fast, close webserver on a non-peak.

just my opinion..

Remember this is not full DOCSIS 3 yet. They have the download done correctly but there hasn't been anything certified in uploads yet so they're still using the old DOCSIS 2 upload. By offering 5 for upload, they're actually stretching their bandwidth even farther. They're giving you more even though they still don't have more yet.
