Don't worry; everything's fine
(old news - 12:32PM Saturday Jan 19 2008)
tags: business · bandwidth · cable · Comcast
Major Comcast investor Chieftain Capital sent an angry letter to the cable company this week expressing concerns about stocks and asking for the removal of CEO Brian Roberts. Comcast has responded to the complaint with something of a blanket statement about how well the company is doing. They say that they are happy to hear input from their shareholders and will review Chieftain’s concerns in greater detail (despite having taken issue with Chieftain’s perspective in the past). In the meantime, Comcast notes that they continue performing well despite “a challenging economy and an increasingly competitive environment”. In other words, they want investors to believe that there’s nothing to worry their pretty little heads over.

I bet you'll get the excuse that "you weren't scheduled for an install today".

That's what Charter did when i worked for them.

You mean you thought they'd actually show up when scheduled?
I think the Chicago Cubs have a better chance at winning the world series than for Comcrap to show on time, the first time!

Considering the last time they were out on time, yes, I did.

I have had Comcast installed in 3 locations in the past and EVERY time they did the same thing to me. They did it to my mom and dad and every friend who I have recommended Comcrap to. THEY NEVER SHOW UP ON TIME AND NEVER CALL TO INFORM ANYBODY. A friend of mine had to take a day off from work so that they could be there for Comcast (who never showed up)... then they took another day off after the Comcast rep apologized and promised it wouldn't happen again. It happened again... no show and another missed day at work. Another hypocritical apology and a promise to take $10 off the bill for the trouble...

They are the most incompetent company I have ever dealt with. When they DID show up, they installed the cable modem after installing 3 signal splitters first. Naturally the signal level was too low for the modem to synch and so the internet would not work. Not only did they use too many splitters and hook the modem up at the END of the chain (instead of the beginning) they also hooked it up to the -7db side of the splitter rather than the lower loss -3.5db side. Total and perfect incompetence. Constantly raising rates... poorly designed website. Abysmal email system that incorrectly reports 0 messages no matter how many you have. Slow loading (on their home page that espouses "high" speed intenet. The list goes on. Now this... "We haven't made any money in years but stop your complaining, investors. Just give us your money and shut up".

I find it hilarious that someone always is waiting "right this moment" every time a Comcast story is posted. I smell bovive excrement in this jokers posting.

ROFL! Ok Ordered 8mg last Tuesday and because I had the CDV modem they said it wouldn't handle 8m speeds, so they needed to bring another modem and hook it up. I personally don't care if you believe it or not

Time to rework the CEO pay structure

I still don't understand why we pay these guys so much, just to lose money. The CEO's "bonuses", which typically account for more than 90% of their overall income, should be directly ties to the stock return. Nothing else. Investors own the company. Make money for the investors, you get paid more. Lose money, you get no "bonus".

Don't bring that topic up. People will tell you to go and live in China or some other communist country if you don't like it.

Re: Time to rework the CEO pay structure

Well, the argument you are suggesting would be valid if I said CEO's shouldn't be paid as much, period. But I am not suggesting that. If, under their command, the company shows great returns, I see nothing wrong with paying them accordingly.

I just don't see the logic in paying a "bonus" to a guy who yields a loss on the stock.

Perhaps that is a bad financial move on the part of the investors. Especially when teh investors want the CEO out.

Re: Time to rework the CEO pay structure

Normally the "bonus" structure is all laid out in advance. They are called a Bonus only for tax reasons, as the amount is set when they hire/negotiate with the induvidual.

So yeah, it's bad planning on the investors part to a degree, but it's not like they are voting to give some jerk-off a $39M bonus after he drops the stock return.

LOL, bonuses should never be planed out in advance.

That is just poor decision making. LOL

"expressing concerns about stocks "

What does that mean?

"something of a blanket statement about how well the company is doing."

ditto

Why havent our congressmen retroactively taxed these bonuses? They seem to have the power to change the law and do that to regular Americans.

whiners

It gets slightly old hearing a bunch of whiners complaining about 'Comcast this' or complaining about 'Comcast that'. I say get a life or get another provider. If you don't like Comcast find a dial-up in your area; now that will give you something to 'bitch' about.

This is technology and sometimes there are problems and CEO's of every mega-company get bonuses regardless of performance. To me it is a waste of money to spend $100 - $250 on a pair of Air Jordans when they do nothing but house your stinky ass feet. They don't make you jump higher nor make you look more appealing to the ladies 'ugly is ugly'.

That is my 2 cents and I'm sticking to it...

Re: whiners

Man has a point......If its ruining your life so much disconnect. You won't die and neither will comcast. There are a lot more happy cable modem users then unhappy ones Technically comcast doesn't guarantee anything (uptime or speeds) It wasn't all that long ago you paid 1000's for a 1.5 meg T1 line......the price of the T1 wasn't for the speed you got, it was the guaranteed uptime. For +or- $50 bucks a month Your simply not going to get that type of reliability over an infrastructure that was never originally designed to carry data packets (dial up anyone?) I'm not saying Comcast is perfect (far from it) but if your life revolves around an internet connection so much and you can't be without it for even a second don't you think YOU need to look into other avenues for internet access. T1's are still available for under 700 bucks A MONTH in some places....Sounds like a better deal to me then being pissed at Comcast all the time.

Re: whiners

yea everyone sh8ut up and take in in the a$$ because shooting your self in the foot is gona make things change. cable in nj was alout better back before comcast took everything over. yea disconnect thats the answer to everything. How about some compition. dialup isnt a option anymore web sites have way to much crap to load up. Yea us ex comcast users bitch and complain alout but how els does anything get changed. Comcast is allowed to run there commericals saying how great there service is. which is funny if my dish gets covered in 3 feet of snow i can go out with a broom and brush it off and have my tv back up in a min but it takes comcast 6 hrs to get the snow cleared off there dishes. When i hate comcast internet my connection would reset every 5 min which will get you kicked out of alout of irc channels. I personally was able to jump the comcast ship before they got voip but i have friends that have comcast voice they ended up signing up for grand central just so they would get there voice mail. My cell is more reliable in a tunnle

Chieftain Capital

These a$$hats own only 2% of the shares of Comcast. Since when does a 2% owner speak for the other 98%?

From the WSW:
Chieftain Capital Management Inc., which manages 60.5 million Comcast shares, or about 2% of its stock outstanding, this week wrote to Comcast calling for the ouster of CEO Brian Roberts, describing his management as a "Comcastrophe" for shareholders after a decade of "zero return."
From Jim Cramer:
Cramer concluded by saying Comcast's (CMCSA - Cramer's Take - Stockpickr - Rating) CEO, Brian Roberts, is being unfairly blamed for the company's declining stock price. Institutional shareholder Chieftain Capital had called for Roberts' ouster in a letter earlier this week.

"Every cable company's down big," Cramer said. "I have it on good assurance ... seven days a week he works. ... I think the family that built that company and Brian Roberts have done a wonderful job."
These rich idiots at Chieftain must have bought Comcast when it was at an all-time high and now they're bitching because it's $17.03 a share. I say "Time to buy Comcast".
