Comcast Kills 'MyTV Choice' Offer for New Users
by Karl Bode 02:36PM Monday Sep 30 2013
Comcast has rather quietly killed off the company's "MyTV Choice" programming package for new customers. The $25 package was launched two years ago, excluded Sports and other regional sports networks, and had proven popular among customers looking to save a little money. Analysts have repeatedly warned that skyrocketing TV rates aren't sustainable, and while cable operators have paid a lot of lip service to lower priced and more creative bundling options, their actions quite often sing a different tune. Comcast's move came as the company's CEO proclaimed his love of innovative pricing options in an interview with PBS last week.

Would love to see Time Warner bring on a carriage dispute with ESPN.

On the other hand, you never see Comcast (owner of content creator NBC/Universal) getting into carriage disputes. They just raise rates and send their customers to carriage dispute happy DirecTV. Dish Network also gets into carriage disputes as well.

Competition does exist in the pay TV market, it's called satellite. And if I was in an apartment complex that didn't allow dishes (which may be illegal under FCC OTARD rules), I'd just get a tripod mount dish and take it in every night.

I've experienced ImOn (when they were McLeod USA), Mediacom, Comcast, and Time Warner and I currently have DirecTV. They are much better than broadcast TV.

I have not and will not cut the cord.

Using the "satellite is competition" argument would hold water if everyone could get satellite. Not everyone can. The FCC rules if I'm not mistaken will allow sat dishes in areas it isn't communal. In other words, the resident has to really have the sole use of the area where the dish will go in an apartment setting. Also, there is LoS issues as well. Not everyone will have it, either because of buildings, common areas or trees, etc. True competition is something that EVERYONE can utilize.

Re: ESPN

Agreed, there is no meaningful competition for many users. However, this is TV we are talking about. Entertainment, pure and simple. The Basic Broadcast tier is regulated by the FCC, but everything else? Priced at whatever the market can bear. As it should be, IMO.

And this is similar to many entertainment options. Movies? There is one cinema in close proximity to me. No competition to drive down prices. Major League Baseball? I have the Boston Red Sox - about as expensive as it gets. Again no competition. I really have no problem with that. If you don't want an unnecessary luxury, then don't but it. Seems simple.

That's a two way street. There are also those who can get satellite but not cable. I'm in that situation because no cable company runs a cable by my house.

I did wonder why they discontinued it instead of raising rates. Maybe they have a limit on how many different packages they can keep track of.

would be funny if it wasn't so sad

"Comcast's move came as the company's CEO proclaimed his love of innovative pricing options in an interview with PBS last week."

Sure.....

To the media: "We LOVE innovative pricing"

To the Company: "Pssssstttttt.... they are actually liking that option. KILL IT NOW!!!"

What they REALLY mean about innovative pricing is the creative ways they can tell us that raising prices on modem renatal, paying bills in person, paying bills online, watching channels with decent resolution, etc is what we want.......

Was this even promoted?

I didn't know it existed and I've looked at the Cocmast site numerous times, and called about TV package pricing
