Comcast Launches Wireless Broadband In Philly Mobile WiMax 'High Speed 2 Go' hits third market Right on the heels of last week's Clearwire Philadelphia launch, Comcast says they too have now launched their re-branded Mobile WiMax "High Speed 2 Go" service in the company's hometown of Philadelphia. Philly is Comcast's third launch market for the services, which have previously been launched in Atlanta and Portland. As is the case in all Comcast Mobile WiMax markets, they're actually offering some fairly decent pricing packages. The two flavors:
• Comcast High-Speed 2go Metro service costs $49.99 for twelve months ($72.95 thereafter) and comes with 12Mbps Comcast home broadband service and a Wi-Fi router. The service uses a Mobile WiMax data card that will obviously only work in areas where there's Comcast/Clearwire Mobile WiMax.
• Comcast High-Speed 2go Nationwide service costs $69.99 ($92.95 thereafter) and also comes with Comcast 12Mbps home broadband service and a home Wi-Fi router. The service uses a dual-mode data card that allows users to float between Clearwire's Mobile WiMax network and Sprint's 3G EVDO network.

That is listed on the national plan. I did not see anything on the metro plan.

Despite that I'm not sure why they are offering these in large metro areas where people obviously actually have choices for broadband and said choices are better. It seems the type of customers that would go for this type of product are those that live in areas without broadband. That being said, come on Comcast you have 250 GB cap for your cable internet service then you have this 5 GB cap for this? That's a fucking joke. | |

If Clear has WiMAX service here in Denver, I'd already be on this plan. Even with a 15% discount the AT&T Mobile Broadband card I got on the 15th is running me around $60 per month. With the $20 discount Comcast is giving by rolling mobile and fixed broadband into one package, I'd only be paying $50 per month for both 3G and 4G service, with no cap on 4G transfers and the high probability that 4G will show up back in Fredericksburg, TX since San Antonio and Austin are just down the road. | |

| Re: Glad to hear it! 2500MHz spectrum isn't terribly great for covering rural areas, though it'll cover places where line-bonded reach-extended DSL should but don't.
In all fairness, cheap fat bandwidth pipes are easier to come by where the cable networks already have a fair amount of fiber. I suspect that Clear has some deal where Comcast runs fiber to their towers in Comcast areas at a reduced price, in return for Clear offering a low wholesale internet rate for Comcast customers. Comcast wins because they can offer a more attractive fixed + mobile data option than Verizon or AT&T with those companies' 3G networks, and Clear wins because they aren't raped on bandwidth loop charges.
All that said, I wish that Clear WiMAX didn't operate off of Clear's backbone when rebranded as Cocmast. Maybe then the WiMAX service wouldn't be upload-capped (see Sprint-branded WiMAX). Me likey 15/5 over wireless. | |

1 edit | $30 a month for an already comcast customer I'm from Philly and called CS to ask for for specifics. CS told me that since I was already a Comcast customer (already have wired broadband with them) I could get the service for $30 a month. I asked him if it was a teaser rate and he said no. He did say that if I agreed to a one year contract, they would waive the one time $99 "activation fee". Either way he said it would still be $30 a month and average speeds would be between 3 and 6 Megs down. Unfortunatelly, they arent offering a USB modem at this time, just card. | |

That is 3G not WiMAX. WiMax is called 4G. Sprint does have 4G USB modems but does Comcast offer those? I have only seen the 4G Desktop modems myself with WiFi connectivity. Good if you've got Linux  or multiple users such as your PDA and your laptop. | |
